Apparently Bowie liked Kurt's version. "I was simply blown away when I found that Kurt Cobain liked my work, and have always wanted to talk to him about his reasons for covering 'The Man Who Sold the World'" and that "it was a good straight forward rendition and sounded somehow very honest. It would have been nice to have worked with him, but just talking with him would have been real cool." Bowie called Nirvana's cover "heartfelt". "If the mark of a good cover is that people do not even realize it's a cover, Nirvana certainly did a good job"

I picked my son up from camp today (just turned 15) and had Nirvana playing on the drive. He hopped in, looked at me and said, with wide eyes, “sick music choice mom, I didn’t know you liked Nirvana”. The drive home consisted of telling my son stories of what a mischievous teenager I was when Nirvana was at its peak, and commending him on being a better teen than I was. What a bonding moment though. Thank you Kurt, your brilliance transcends the ages 🥹 (and *yes* I know Bowie wrote this particular jam, lol)

We passed upon the stairs We spoke of was and when Although I wasn't there He said I was his friend Which came as a surprise I spoke into his eyes I thought you died alone A long long time ago Oh no, not me We never lost control You're face to face With the man who sold the world I laughed and shook his hand And made my way back home I searched for form and land For years and years I roamed I gazed a gazeless stare At all the millions here I must have died alone A long, long time ago Who knows? Not me We never lost control You're face to face With the man who sold the world Who knows? Not me I never lost control You're face to face With the man who sold the world Who knows? sabbracadabra this album is listed somewhere in rollingstone’s 500 greatest albums of all time. So i would say it definitely was one of their best performances. And also thats what kurt himself thought too. What makes this performance so special compared to other Nirvana live performances which are also good, nirvana focused on performing songs that were not well known to people compared to smells like teen spirit, lithium etc. they thus created this raw, acoustic sound which deliver Kurt’s pain so profoundly. I dont think there ever will be this much depressing rock concert ever.

+mclarenV12 So what you are basically saying is that it is "smart" to OD on heroin and blow your head off in order to commit suicide, along with that you are sure that such a death would be painless. How the fuck do you know what it is like to die with a bullet to your head even if you are high? Where people mourn Kurt's death, you say that it is smart to die in such a manner and not to tolerate certain bullshit that surrounds the artists. You must be depressed yourself for having said such crap.
@UltimateGizmo
@UltimateGizmo 8 лет назад
+mclarenV12 You need to get a life dude. I was just talking about you not judging another person's way of committing suicide. Although that is true that people nowadays are becoming more and more narcissistic, but it has existed since the story came into existence. Although your fake hypotheses is based upon your high school grade CNS based Biology which you have cleverly combined with your bullshit theory of dying while OD on drug in order to avoid any pain. You are no one to comment on that, fucking shithead. My own grandfather succumbed to cancer and I know how painful and dreadful that disease is all about. There are other people who have the will to survive as well. I'd rather recommend you to stop making your fake hypotheses and pretending as if you are a mature 30 y.o. arse and stop whining over this ever changing society. Nothing is stagnant in this life, accept it as it comes to you rather than crying like a li'l bitch and saying that you are mature enough to understand things whilst all you are doing is crying and saying that it is "better to die" after having seen everything change around you. Thanks for reading, hope you get your peace in this life(or through death, whichever way you wanna choose, lmfao). Get a life douche. #peace

Bowie (as far as i know) wrote this song with the influence of his brother, who was a cultured and intelligent young man that had dealt with serious mental health issues. Bowie had a good relationship with him, he also introduced many aspects of art and philosophy to Bowie, definitely influencing Bowie’s art. Bowie told that his brother would sometimes go on long trips and dissappear for long times. One day he went on another one of these trips, and eventually committed suicide by lying on the railway. RIP to all those beatiful souls we lost who were fighting their own demons.
