The Nissan Ariya and Volkswagen ID.5 are two of the freshest electric SUVs to hit the UK market, as well as being extremely closely matched in terms of size, price and range.
In this CarGurus UK review, electric car expert Vicky Parrott test the 2022 Nissan Ariya against the equally as fresh VW ID.5. She considers both models for styling, practicality, technology, driving dynamics, charging and more.
The Ariya, which is available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, features a 63kWh or 87kWh useable battery capacity, giving an official range on the WLTP cycle of 250 or 329 miles respectively. It costs from around £44,000 up to £66,000.
The VW ID.5 fights back with a 77kWh battery and an official WLTP range of up to 327 miles. Prices start from about £50,000, making it an ideal match for the cheapest long-range model of the Ariya.

Vicky is one of the best car journalist/reviewers on RU-vid. I especially like the videos where she profiles her own personal cars, but she does the standard new car reviews really well, telling it like it is and summing up the good and weak points of the vehicles she's driving.

Great video! You nailed what I have felt so troubled about. The ID4 and Nissan both seem like good options, unless you look at other options. Speed & smooth 1 pedal driving was a major shortcoming for the ID4 when I drove recently

I chose Ariya over everything else because: Hyundai and Kia have 15month leadtime atm VW and Skoda is both more expensive than the Ariya. Interior of the Aria is superior to VW and Skoda (imo)
@Lycaerix

Same. The Kia EV6 has a horrendous interior--it's plastic jank as far as the eye can see. The Ariya is simply gorgeous inside and out, drives like a dream, has the most comfortable seating I've ever experienced in any car, and is everything I want a car to be and then some. Bravo to Nissan, I say :)

I grew up in the 60’s. Everything was an option and you ordered your car as not huge lots of cars at the dealership. No power seats, no cup holders, no lumbar support. I never ordered power seats as rarely needed adjustment . I did not mind roll up windows as one less thing to break. Most would order a cheap radio that you would replace with nice aftermarket.(manufacturers became wise to that and integrated radio into car more) we have become use to all these expensive options. Hard to order minimal optioned cars. I remember Porsche stating they would never allow cup holders in their vehicles. Now our living room is on wheels. More safety items had to be added as more distractions like late braking, etc.

Regarding home charging (5:42) it's mentioned they are both Type 2 and can charge on any home wall box. Not quite the case if you are coming from having a Nissan Leaf (which some looking at the Ariya may be) which if teathered will be a Type 1. I must add that the reviews on this channel really are some of the best.

Vicky the wheel size will affect the comfort of the vehicle. The 19" wheels with low profile tires is not the best. Many car reviewers have pointed this out. The 18" wheels with a slightly larger profile ( 65 ) will take out some of the ride harshness.

I think Japanese engineers need to be constantly reminded that roads overseas aren't as smooth as in Japan. The suspension setting would be just fine on Japanese roads (where they test their vehicles), but it may result in a different driving experience with roads in the UK.

EV cars are tending to be pretty large, I'm sure if you put an early Range Rover alongside, it might look 'compact' ? And with prices from £50k upwards, I do wonder if manufacturers are making hay/profits while the sun shines, from comfortably off 'early adopters'? Meanwhile, secondhand Fiestas for the rest of us...

My model X has an optional 19 kw on board level 2 charger, 54 mph charge speed. Most Teslas offer only 11 kw level 2 on board chargers(45 mph)although base Model 3 with rear wheel 7 kw on board charger, 35 mph. Many manufacturers only offer 3-6 kw on board chargers. 3-6 kw on board chargers significantly slow charger speeds at home but most the time your sleeping, 12 mph. Of course your 240 volt 30, 40, 50 amp circuits affect charging speeds Tesla states regular garage dryer plug(40 amp) good enough you do not need an expensive 100 amp(actually 72 amp) circuit. Remember the actual charger is in the car. The outlet or wall connector just connects the car to power. You mobile NEMA cable allows use of regular outlet vs fancier hardwired wall connector. DC fast charger(bypass on board charger)(level 3) like superchargers are not as prevalent vs level 2 stations. Many DC fast chargers can be limited in their KW. More 50 kw DC fast chargers vs 100 or 150 kw chargers. 350 kw chargers are very rare. Tesla offers the most stalls with better maintenance. Part of Teslas MSRP supports their supercharger network. Other manufacturers prefer private or government(taxpayer) to provide stations

MG4 is almost £25K, a tad more with top spec, but still 1/2 the well known EVs, such as Model 3, Ariya, EV6 etc. Key flaw of the less spendy EVs is slower charging, but for the elderly or young, long distance journeys are probably rarer.

I like how Tesla Incorporating everything into the touchscreen even gear selector. No need to take eyes off the road. Surprised not more voice commands. Buttons and switches DATE a car. Plus software easy to modernize VR buttons. Remember, 2007 iphone vs BlackBerry phone with buttons. iPhone offered smooth touchscreen, no buttons. iPhone updates could add or subtract VR buttons.

No, I have Model Y and my main complaint is why vital controls such as windshield wiper speeds and or climate controls are on the screen where you must take the eyes off from the road on highway speed and on uneven roads to try to use the finger to turn them on ? Dangerous especially winter rain and snow is coming. Voice command takes time to receive and respond ( if responds correctly). Tesla is not a true automobile company, a software company?

55 section is NOT balloon in tyre terms. I'd prefer at least 60 section but the ridiculous fashion is for stupidly low profile tyres on road cars. Greater section equals greater comfort and better economy. And it's not as if you can see the wheels and tyres whilst you are driving along at all.

Great review Vicky - you are an unsung gem compared to many reviewers. Now for the vehicles. Its is now clear that EV's unless small city hoppers, are now not a wise idea. Public chargers out-with the Tesla network are just a disaster - non functioning, long waits, pricing and lack of all add up to an unpleasant ownership. Cost to purchase too high and getting higher all the time. Only those with a very good tariff and home charging only are able to justify why an EV is a good idea. Environmentally good? Well apart from localised pollution they are worse in all other respects. CO2 to produce much higher, number of km to get the payback very high, dirty, dangerous mining to supply the minerals needed, excess tyre deposits on the roads due to their weight, a time bomb of battery disposal to deal with and finally they still need generated electricity from somewhere so not zero CO2. Finally there are just not enough minerals in the world to supply everyone - not nearly enough... Small city EV's only please and we'll still need our ICE vehicles for a long time yet - expect a turn around on that 2030-2035 deadline because EV's are not the ultimate answer to the problem...

II find it interesting that she thinks the Nissan does not have the same comfort as an ID 5, but Bjørn Nyland ( Tesla Bjørn ) has a different focus, namely very little noise while driving. He has measured the noise level in the Nissan and says it is almost like a Mercedes or a BMW. My focus will be low noise level and options for hitching. Another thing that is important to me is that Nissan has proven quality with the Nissan leaf. Personally, I would probably choose an ID buzz, but this is because the most important thing for me is BIG space + trailer hitch and 400 km range.
