Come along with Eric O. at the SMA shop as he repairs a fast idle cam actuator or some times referred to as a thermostatic fast idle solenoid on a 2001 Nissan Frontier. In this case the actuator was still work however it was leaking coolant pretty bad.

I guess they needed that huge spring to allow the new part to expand and shrink in the package while on the shelf. A rigid brace might break or cause the part to fail, and if it gets too loose internally it could fall apart. It might have been better to design the system to have an internal end stop that limits travel of the sensor piston. Presumably they couldn't do that because of the way the sensor and wax pellet are assembled....

Expanding wax element... Where have I heard this before??? Oh yeah! My 1984 Chrysler New Yorker with the Mitsubishi engine with the Mikuni carburetor. That Mikuni carburetor used a wax element to disengage the choke... theoretically... but it was the single point of failure. I never had to worry about a radar cop chasing me down, because with the 'destroyer smoke screen' I laid down, the cop lost sight of me every time. What a crock of the 'genuine article.' Nobody here in Deetroit had a solution for the problem; a carb rebuild could only be done by one or two shops on the west coast (read that L.A. for about $750 in today's dollars) and the Detroit solution was 'the crusher.' Thank you Chrysler; Domo Arigato Mikuni!

Serious question, Eric. How do you keep your nails so clean?? I am strictly a weekend mechanic and my nails are black for several days after any job, no matter how minor. You work on cars all day every day and your nails are always clean. What kind of cleaner / technique do you use to clan your hands at the end of each day??

Nissan factory protocol for installation of these thermostats is 2 steps: 1. Never remove wax pin(pushrod) as air can be introduced into unit making part inaccurate 2. After removal of new part from retaining spring fixture, you have roughly 10 seconds to install and load wax pin(pushrod) with fast idle cam

Servo motor is the term for those, but to appease the electric guys you might want to say wax servo motor just to shut em up. Seems to be a waste of money to have both this and computer controlled air bypass, but by the stamped steel air box alone I know it's already an extinct dinosaur that I'll never be bothered with.

As a former Nissan tech we used to call it the wax valve. Parts Dept. at pretty much any Nissan dealer will know what your talking about. Still available at Nissan all day everyday. Common problem.

The air box is actually made out of plastic. It's also very easy to break that plastic nipple that the big hose attaches to.

My experiences with Nissan (owned both an '87 and a '97 Hardbody P/U) is that corroded fasteners had more tendancy to break off than break loose for me...especially the screws holding the distributor cap on.

i worked on allot of dyhatsu, those little work trucks with that same carb set up. and yes I used the screwdriver trick myself then had to make that gasket if it was too bad. great job boss 👍👍

Ummm Eric are they Philips screws or are they JIS screws??? Philips screwdrivers just cam out of those JIS screws.I know i only found out about them recently as well.

My 2003 Nissan frontier is doing the something. I am unable to find the fast Idle Solenoid . Where did you find yours and what is the part #?. Nissan has one but it is expensive, it may be $ 165.00.

I’m with you about the screws pain in the ass only thing they are not actually Phillips head they are JIS /Japanese Industry Standard and shaped slightly different to where the Phillips driver doesn’t seat perfectly risk stripping more easily, worth investing in JIS Drivers for anyone who owns a Japanese car or truck

Eric, great educational videos as usual! On new dry gaskets, like at the throttle body, a lot of time I will do a light film coating of a white lithium grease on both sides (applied with acid brush). Next time in, the gasket is generally still manageable/useable. I do the same to a used gasket, if I do not have a replacement and it works more often than not. This, also, works for a gasket that is difficult to keep in position during an install, as the grease film hold the gasket in place.

That might be a stupid question, but why exactly does a throttle body need to be cooled? I don't think my Civic has a coolant hose attached to it...Hmm.

I have a 2004 xterra and when I put a new intake gasket i bend the plate where the screw hits that sensor and after that I had a high idle,when cold it was 1,500 and it will drop to 1,100 so I bend that bracket that way it wont touch the sensor and now 1,000-900 cold and 750 when hot,I dont know why but this is what that sensor suppose to do but on my truck it seems like it dont need it😂

i owned a 2000 frontier 2.4 that turned out to be a piece of crap. leaked power steering fluid and coolant within two years...sold it after three and got a toyota tacoma...problem solved!!

JUST WATCHED THIS VIDEO. HAVING TROUBLE WITH HIGH IDLE. CHECKED IACV. TOOK OFF AND CLEANED. DIDN'T BENCH CHECK. NO CEL's LIVE IN LAS VEGAS. REAL HOT HERE. DID A BYPASS ON COOLANT LINES TO THROTTLE BODY. COULD THAT BE A PROBLEM IF NOT THE PROBLEM?

Use a zip tie on it next time to hold the spring up around the large bolt , had this one time and it worked like a charm

I just saw the Actron CP9690on one of your vids. and showed that it'll test coolent temperature. I just bought one on EBAY for my 1985 Ford with OBDI. It'll be better than my Snap-on scanner which doesn't test digital readings like OBDII. I've been wanting to test things like CTS temps. and O2 readings etc. THANKS!!

I have an 87 D21 pickup. VG30i v6 5 speed. I can’t find this valve anywhere and my truck just started idling at 2k last night in cold weather after it warmed up. I’m suspecting this

Yo Eric O @southmainautorepairllc the throttle body mounting gasket is the big circular gasket. The one under that spacer adapter thing that goes from a big circle to 4 smaller ones, comes with the intake manifold gasket kit. I've never been able to find that gasket by itself.. loosening those bolts does loosen that gasket under that plate that we didn't see in the video, but because u didn't remove or even mess with that plate, should be absolutely fine... Lol on mine, I removed it all and then realizes I didn't have either gasket! Haha used rtv and believe it or not, I TOTALLY have a vacuum leak go figure. Stupid me hahahaha. Love ur channel man! I'm always watching!

Phillips heads or J.I.S? They look similar, but a Phillips driver will cam out of a J.I.S. fastener pretty quickly.

I am very surprised they went with a mechanical thermostatically controlled switch...( cost what?? $30 ? ) Why oh why did they NOT use a 400 $$ electronically controlled servo! They really weren't using their brain there

Ive got a 91 nissan d21 4x4 with the 2.4 ka24e in it. I just spent over 2k on having the head gasket..water pump..plugs ...radiator..oil.. antifreeze...and 2 new fuel injectors on it. Ran fine for about 2 weeks then started sputtering like a fouled plug...replaced the plugs and fuel filter in it and it still sputters and lacks power..noticed one of the new injectors is leaking could that cause the sputtering in it? Thanks for any info

I'm sure this has been brought up, but there is a Japanese Standard for Phillips head fasteners that is slightly different than standard Phillips. I work on Japanese industrial electronics and I bought a screwdriver after I found this out and have yet to cam out of the head. I don't know if this is always true, but the japanese screws have a dimple on the head.
