Thanks for sharing! The Leaf's main failing are: (1) Battery temperature management relies on airflow - there's no liquid cooling/heating (2) Chadamo charging socket is old, old, old. And slow. But I'd buy a 62kWh 2020 e+ with around 10k miles in the clock. Thanks for keeping it real. Dealers? Don't get me started!

Wow, that's 343 km (213 miles) real world driving with 4% capacity remaining and with a battery that's 3% degraded (SOH of 97%). For those vehicles here in the states it appears the EPA's figure of 215 miles for the Leaf SL PLUS is right on target. Excellent test guys.........

Yes Leafspy is a good app, especially handy when you are checking battery stats in Japan. We put in a little bit of Leafspy information to keep the tech heads happy. But at the end of the day, the every day consumer will be having a look at the GOM (guess o meter). cheers Karen and Shane

Great video guys, the Leaf has come long way. I had a used 2012 leaf for 4yrs in nz , battery went down to 16kwh on full charge. I would drive it until the dashboard just show dashes in the range and even that, i would get 2km before turtle mode. I'm looking forward to getting back into an EV in Australia.

Thanks for sharing Tonga, you are a Leaf veteran. There are good deals for the 40 kWh ZE1 Leafs in Japan. You can pick up a 2017/18 Leaf with 25,000 - 50,000km's. For about $27,000, or you can pay double for a new one. cheers Karen and Shane

Most of the last 30 km of the trip is in an 80 km zone. We did wind it back to 90 km going up the last big hill before we descended into the Tuggeranong Valley. Just to bank a couple of Joules of energy, to better our chances of getting home. Cheers Karen and Shane

A few have been imported. Leaf spy should have showed you, you had plenty of range left. Nearly 10% once you hit 1% on the dash. At 4% dash, you actually had 13% actual or 35-50km remaining.

Good point Leaf Storm, but most consumers do not know about Leaf Spy, so they operate purely off the dash.

Very good question Stephen, most of the general notation and numbers are all in english. @ev4me2

Great question Rodrigo, we are still figuring that all out. I have a feeling that the local Nissan dealerships, might not be so happy about servicing a JDM Leaf. We will check that out in the near future, that's if the staff don't chase us off the premises with pitchforks. cheers Karen and Shane

@@ev4me2 Nissan Woden would service it, no problems at all. They are happy to service my 2015 imported Leaf. I am sure the Nissan dealership at Belconnen would be the same.
@ev4me2
@ev4me2 4 года назад
I visited the Nissan service and repair in Belconnen 3 weeks ago. I asked if they would be happy to service Yuki the Leaf, but they were unsure. They said they would send the mechanic out to have a look in 10 minutes, and then I waited for another 10 minutes after that, and then they said that it was going to take another 10 minutes. Then I basically said this is a great opportunity to check out one of the first e+ Leafs in Australia, and they seemed to be disinterested. I thought they might have been a little more enthusiastic to check out a new EV. Just to give them a heads up what was coming down the pipeline. it wasn't a matter of bragging. But that's ok I reckon people could almost take their Leaf to a tyre, brake, and steering specialist once a year, for a check. Change their own cabin filter, do a quick Leafspy snapshot, and it's all done for another year. Take Nissan out of the equation. cheers Shane

Thank you for doing the real world Test. I've seen a couple of 40kWh tests where they run it down to just dashes and still have 10 to 16 kms left(Emergencies Only). Do you have the ability to remotely Pre Heat or Cool the car? I have seen an Apple store App called My Leaf that claims to do this. Did you get any English Conversions done on your Dash or Centre console? I am married to a Japanese woman so wondering if it was worth it for me to do it?
@ev4me2
@ev4me2 4 года назад
Lots of questions Kieth, here we go: Yes have the capability to Pre-heat/Pre cool the car. But have not tested yet. Have not converted dash yet, most of the basic notation is in English, but menu's are in Japanese. I used "google translate"on iphone to configure sub-menu's on dash. eg turn off steering assist, turn off climate control timers, etc. Have not converted Radio/Nav to english, again basic notation is OK, its just the sub-menu's. Google translate again. Also radio freq are different. So bought a 18 Mhz band expander, modified it in the lab to be a 20 Mhz band expander. Then installed in the Antenna line of the radio. SO if you want to listen to 106.3 FM radio station, it gets received as 86.3 Mhz on the JDM radio. Also because band expander slightly attenuates radio signal, we installed a larger car Antenna, to help overcome this problem. If you can live with your dash with it in Japanese, and you are happy, stick with that. And get your lovely wife to translate every so often. Cheers EV4ME

You may also be interested to know that Chargefox has an ultra-rapid charging station under construction in Cooma. I say "under construction" - it's been there for over 6 months but something is holding up activation! Also there is an ACTEWAGL 50 kW fast charger in Tuggeranong, I don't know Canberra that well so I'm not sure if this is helpful or not! It's CCS1, which makes it useless for most EV owners in Australia but Chademo car owners fortunately don't need to worry about that!

We didn't get to have a look at the Cooma charger due to range testing at the time. As for the Tuggeranong charger, we haven't visited that one as yet. cheers Karen and Shane

This is great to see, I noticed in my 24kwh leaf, I get around 5.8kms per kWh @ 90kmh so not to much difference. I only have a 20klm run to work and do 100 to 120kmh, I’m heavy on the foot and drive it like I do all my cars. I get 5kms to the kWh , but it way more fun to drive :). For long trips I still use the Subaru and sit on 130 kmh. Around town on eco in granny mode with AC on I’m doing around 7.5 :) or about 120kms range. but that’s hitting the warning buzzer :)
@ev4me2
@ev4me2 4 года назад
5kms to the kWh is more fun. Its so hard trying not to burn people off at the lights !!
@jestronixhanderson9898
@jestronixhanderson9898 4 года назад
EV4ME - the great thing is you don’t have to try, EVs are the equivalent of an ICE car bouncing off the limiter at the lights:) push go , done ! I’m often surprised how slow off the line all ICE cars are. , even powerful cars. Mind you leafs arnt that quick once up to speed. Your e+ is 7 seconds I think , which is quick but most cars are about that now. However those first 3-4 seconds your way out in front :) I often get great green light runs as I can get through the next set, all legally too :) it’s a shame leafs arnt all wheel drive, in wet days I drive eco to avoid constant wheel spin :)
@ev4me2
@ev4me2 4 года назад
The e+ Leaf is definitely too powerful. It is more like NISMO. We keep ours on eco mode all the time.
@jestronixhanderson9898
@jestronixhanderson9898 4 года назад
EV4ME - I test drove the 40kwh and loved the one pedal braking :) In my leaf the eco mode has an epedal likeness but nowhere as aggressive. I think in a year or two I’ll import the 40, these are around 25k landed now, should be a tad under 20k by the time I’ll be looking. with second hand Kona getting down into the 50s now I think the leaf 62 will never come to Australian dealers.
@ev4me2
@ev4me2 4 года назад
@@jestronixhanderson9898 Yes some good deals to have next year for the JDM 40kWh LEAF. Just be aware the real world range 190-210Kms on a fine day (SOH ≈90%). A great little town car for $23000 - $27000. And most importantly offers a lower cost EV to the everyday joe.

What about if you drive it in extreme summer heat with the AC on? I hear the battery will over heat and shut the car down? Not to mention degrade the battery in record time. Any truth to that from what you've seen mate?
@ev4me2
@ev4me2 3 года назад
Extreme summer heat is not so good. The BMS (battery management system) limits temperature of the battery to about 45•C. Have not pushed the battery beyond this. Heat is the killer of EV batteries. For short sharp trips should be OK, but if you are going on a long trip on a hot day, leave early in the morning, to avoid the heat in the middle of the day. Keep the Aircon off as much as possible Also a quick tip, try to avoid EV super chargers (150-350 kW) as they can cook the battery a little bit. The problem is that the battery will slowly gather heat and thermal mass, during the day, and get hotter and hotter (especially after 2 or 3 top up charges). For a passively cooled battery, it is hard to get them to cool down. Thats where you need liquid/active cooling. Cheers EV4ME
@PeterEVcharade
@PeterEVcharade 4 года назад
A suggestion: Before your next video please learn the difference between kW and kWh. The battery capacity is measured in kiloWatt-hours, not kilowatts. You kept saying kilowatts when kiloWatt-hours were clearly meant. kWh is a unit of energy, in this case how much energy can be stored in the battery. kW is a unit of power, the rate at which energy is used. Anyway, good point about anticipating whether the range will remain useful if it had some degradation. This is particularly pertinent with the Leaf that as far as I know still does not do thermal management. It was predicted back in 2012 that the original Leaf would lose considerable battery capacity without cooling whereas batteries such as in the GM Volt and Tesla back in 2012 would retain much higher fractions of their capacity. The prediction came true.
@ev4me2
@ev4me2 4 года назад
Thanks for your feedback Peter. Unfortunately when you going through a script, and thinking of your line on the fly, sometimes I do accidentally transpose the term kWh and kW. But thats what happens when you juggle 2 youtube channels at the same time, and rush content. Sometimes I make few mispronunciations, and my brain is 2 steps ahead of my mouth. And I am far from perfect. Mistakes will be made, and I might slow down next time. And yes, I am going to plug my other RU-vid Channel ( I am shameless !! ) My other RU-vid Channel MBK Upcycle. I am a qualified Electronics Technician (Radtech) of nearly 30 years, and still stuff up time to time on this Channel as well. Checkout MBK Upcycle where we: 1. Empower everyday people how to fix their own Mac stuff (Macbooks, timecapsules, etc) 2. And this is the best part. All Macbooks repaired on the channel get given free to survivors of Domestic Violence (a bit over 30 donated so far), so they can break the cycle of DV, seek an education and start again. Its one of those rare occasion where Macbooks Change lives. And after that plug !!!! And yes trying to predict range down the track is a bit tricky. When you buy an EV you will most likely have it for many years Cheers EV4ME & MBKupcycle

@@ev4me2 Thanks. Sorry about the kW/kWh lecture. It is one of those things that irritates me, especially from professional journalists who would make sure they get units right in some other area but can't be bothered to get it right when the topic is energy systems. I appreciate that you are not doing this professionally but out of a desire to pass on helpful information. By chance, I am waiting on a little cap to show up in the mail and then I am going to try to fix the GPU kernel panic issue of my mid 2010 MacBook Pro. I wonder how many of these got scrapped due to one underspecced component?! Meanwhile, replacing its hard drive with a solid state drive has made it decidedly snappier. I am hoping to keep this Mac going for quite a few more years.
@ev4me2
@ev4me2 4 года назад
This is a first answering a question for MBK Upcycle. Really easy capacitor to replace. Replace the tantalum capacitor with an electrolytic. The value is 330uF 2V (RS Components 726-9877). From memory this is just a little frame buffer filter cappy. Use the 2 irons technique to remove this capacitor (see video on how to remove eeprom). There is a lot of thermal mass in this section of the board. Using hot air just cooks it. It's on the underside of the board by memory. Reapply heat sink compound to processor and you should be right to go. cheers MBK
