Nissan LEAF 62kwh Battery Swap

In this video, we swap a "new" 62kwh battery into a 2012 Nissan LEAF.
When this car first arrived at our shop, it had a highly degraded battery with only 6 capacity bars remaining (it would only go about 30-35mi on a charge). We were able to swap in this new 62kwh battery, and give the car a new lease on life with over 220 miles of range. That's triple what it's range would have been when new in 2012, and 6x what it would do when it first arrived here!
We learned a lot throughout the process of doing this swap, and we look forward to doing more swaps like it in the future! While it is possible to swap this battery into a 2011-2012 LEAF, it is a much better idea to do the swap using a 2013 or newer LEAF, as they share more hardware in common which makes things work a lot better.
If you are interested in upgrading the battery in your Nissan LEAF, or have any other EV repair questions, feel free to get in touch with us here at QC Charge.

The problem with the Leaf is that they have no cooling system for the battery, it's just cooled by ambient air. Because of this, they can get very hot and degrade very fast. They are restricted to one DC Fast Charge per day, too.

Did anyone notice how clean the underside of this car was after nearly a decade on the road? These cars don't get filthy or age like gasoline vehicles do. My 2015 is only 6 years old and I live in a state with slushy nasty winters and yet the car is nearly this clean. Amazing ultra dependable little machines. I agree however, with the need to upgrade the 24kWh packs. These were just too small and required recharging far more often than a larger battery would. Recharging everyday, and sometimes two or three times a day, quickly used up the available charge cycles and accelerated the degradation. My wife's newer 2019 has the 62 kWh pack and only needs to be plugged in once a week. With over 200 miles of range and with at least 1000 charge cycles we should easily cover 200,000 miles before seeing significant battery degradation. I'd consider this upgrade service offered by QC Charge if I wasn't living on the opposite coast. Maybe these guys will offer a transportation service soon😃

The Nissan dealership near me has offered to install a 40kWh battery for US$12,400. I may have to wait for the battery to get shipped, but the alternative? Some guy in Dallas offered to sell me a 62 kWh battery for $16K, and then $1K for the adapter rails, $400 for a "Dala" CAN bridge, and another $3K for installation, he doesn't install the new rear springs (for a battery that weight half again as much? Are you nuts? They're $100 from Nissan, and you can do it with a screwdriver!) and that's before I have to rent a tow rig to get it there...and no warranty. That's north of $21K, and we only paid $26K for the car when we bought it new from Nissan. It's a 2011 with 80K miles, SOH about 70% (9 bars). I can still go more than 70 miles when fully charged.

If motor manufacturers are seeking to further reduce their carbon footprint, why do they not offer a full recondition service for older BEVs that includes; uprating the batteries, a mechanical overhaul and addressing paintwork issues by deep polishing and touch-up (where possible) in preference to churning out brand new cars? I believe that Renault may be commencing this with their Zoe range but only for very limited numbers.

@KiRiTO72987
@KiRiTO72987 Месяц назад
Because Money realistically a BEV makes a lot more sense to through money at to repair then a gas or diesel vehicle since they have almost no drivetrain issues outside of the battery wearing out so the only other repairs really should be suspension as it wears out which is cheap and tires/brakes, makes a lot of sense to replace the battery since the motor and gearbox is highly unlikely to ever have a failure before the frame rusts out but that doesn't make Auto manufacturers as much money, hopefully as more and more EVs hit the road the aftermarket can start supplying battery repair and replacement to more brands and models at cheaper prices

My Honda CRZ has a ~900WH battery. It'd be awesome to add a 96v 28kwh battery pack above the factory battery, and drive each rear wheel with a 20kw motor. It would be cool to just swap the old pack out for a custom larger pack that takes up the old space and raises the load floor of the trunk, but the factory system is not very efficient, requiring the engine to be running for the motor to work, and i think the motor has to run through the CVT instead of being direct drive.

Unfortunately this is a limitation of putting the large (62kwh) battery into a 2011 or 2012 LEAF. In a 2013 or newer, the instrumentation should work like normal, but the older ones basically were never designed to work with this much capacity. The car is fully functional, but it just won't really show the correct SOC on the dash. A 40kwh battery on the other hand could be swapped in and work with no issues in any LEAF (2011-2017).

That pricing would be for a stock size $24kWh battery. As far as we know, it is not possible to buy a new 62kWh battery from Nissan (though there have been some folks who claim their dealers said they can get one). The batteries we are getting come from the used market, and usually are removed from wrecked Nissan LEAFs (though there are rare cases of "like new" batteries that were used for research projects at universities and such, which is what the battery in this video was originally used for). Typically, salvage operations sell used 62kWh packs for ~$9-11k, 40kWh packs for $7-9k, 30kWh for ~$4-6k, and 24kWh packs for ~$2-5k. Depending on which battery is being installed (some require extra work and hardware to adapt to the car), we charge ~$500-2,500 to do the install.

Thank you for this video. I bought a used 2012 leaf a year ago from Carvana which only had 10 life bars. Nissan wouldn't honor the warranty because it had more than 8 bars. My 10 bars soon went to 9. I bought a limited warranty through Carvana and they ended up swapping out the battery which cost 9k (battery and labor). Battery was 8k by itself. My only regret is that it was a 24KwH hour battery replacement. The dealer lied and said the swap wasn't possible for a newer model battery or I would have gotten the 62 kwh hr battery. Also after the swap I was getting an error code about the water pump. What error message did you show after your swap?

Unfortunately they are quite hard to find... If you're lucky, you might be able to find one at a wrecking yard, but often the batteries are already pre-sold before the car even makes it to a wrecker (if at all). The quickest way to get a battery would be to purchase a complete, wrecked LEAF from an insurance auction, though that definitely comes with it's own possible pitfalls and drama...

@QCCHARGE
@QCCHARGE 3 года назад
The total cost is dependent on the cost of the battery itself. The way we do it here, is the customer buys the battery separately (we are willing to help source it, but ultimately the customer makes the purchase), then our cost for the installation is ~$2,500. The communication module that we use does the pairing with the car (hence why it needs to be programmed while the old battery is still in place).

Batteries are not cheap. I would estimate that a replacement 24-30 kWh battery from Nissan is $7500 to $9500 from a Nissan dealer. Just the 40-62 kWh battery is likely $11,000 to $13,000 in this crazy car market of 2022.

My thoughts have changed greatly in the year since I asked these questions, right now the best car's I would recommend to people are 2017 Ford Electric Focus or 2018 Kia electric Soul for like 12K with under 40K miles which is advertsied as dealerships now at this price point, but the key is to find one near you at this price obsviously, but I know 1 year from now, this we'll be common, depending on your personal preferences, the Ford Focus is built a little better than the Kia Sou from a suspension standpoint, it's multilink or double wishbone with the electric, but only MacPhearson Strut for the Soul, but the Soul, has a lot more cargo Room, both have the same range, but the Focus has extra horsepower also, but if the range in the low 100's before battery degradation when they were brand new does not fit a person's need's, than I would say just wait until say January of 2025 when I think it's going to be very common to see the newly redesigned 30 Kilowatts battery in the 2019 Nissan Leaf SL trim be available for like 12K to 15K where you get over 100 more miles in range, you still get the issues however with the non liqud cooling thermal management issues, which present potential problems in the SouthWest in the summertime, (I still think this issue is worst than the severe cold issues and battery range loss I hear from Nissan Leaf owners on RU-vid who live in climates that get into the freezing temps, but if your lucky enough to not live in extreme climates, that's probably the best electric car for the money from a range standpoint, The suspension on the 2019 Nissan Leaf however isn't anything special though, So to summarize, because of what I found out about the 2017 Ford Focus, I don;t recommend a Nissan Leaf over this car even at the 2016 year, which isn't going for much less anyway, the only problem that might arise with the 2017 Ford electric focus is that the car went out of production in 2018, but as I understand it, it's basically a regula Ford Focus anyway so parts for it should be ok in the future if anything breaks down, the electric focus was built even on the same assembly line as the regular focus, right now I can't decide, if I'm going to wait for the 2019 Nissan Leaf to come down more in price, paying 4K for the Nissan Leaf to get that 100 miles extra in range is a fair trade off, considering current gas prices and what they could be in our near future if gasoline shortages occur from middle east upheaval which is more and more a possibility, here is the best 2017 electric Ford Focus review I've seen so far: (I won't go into level 3 charging issues in the future with a Nissan Leaf because that's another subject on it's own) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MuheGsIxeNM.html

Unfortunately Nissan will not sell you a 62kwh LEAF battery (or really any at all unless they are installing it, and depending on the year of your car, they will only install either a 24 or 40kwh pack). The sources for the 62 and 40 kwh pack for these swaps typically come from wrecked or otherwise salvaged cars. In some instances it's possible to find very low usage packs that were used for research projects, but those are exceptionally rare...
