How to replace the timing chain on a 2013 Nissan Qashqai J10 fitted with the 1.6 DCI R9M engine.
Link to the Neilsen Ct4986 timing tool kit that was used for this engine:
www.cannontools...
This Qashqai had a rattling noise coming from the engine, hard to get the camera to pick it up over the clatter of the diesel but it was pronounced and there was also an engine management light on with codes related to the camshaft being out of synchronisation.
This car had less than 85,000 miles and it is quite disappointing that the chain was already showing signs of wear like this. However it possibly may be down to the wrong oil being used, or services being skipped.
My mate just bought the car and wanted to leave it right, hopefully with this new chain and a more rigorous service schedule the new chain should last much longer.
The R9M engine is one that was developed as part of the Renault/Nissan alliance and it seems to have replaced an older 2.0 engine. It is not the same as the smaller 1.5 DCI K9K belt driven engine.
Also the 2.0 M9R engine although its timing locking tools look similar they will not work here.
The R9M is used in a wide range of vehicles that are part of that group, also some badge engineered vehicles and Mercedes also use it in some of their vehicles. The list includes but is not limited to:
- Nissan Qashqai (J10 and the newer J11)
- Nissan X-Trail
- Renualt Megane
- Renault Scenic
- Renault Kadjar
- Renault Tailsman
- Mercedes A Class
- Mercedes C Class
- Vauxhall / Opel Vivaro
- Nissan Primastar
- Renault Trafic
The Qashqai is a tight engine bay, the worst aspect of this job is the fact the way to lock the crankshaft is via a hole located behind the starter. I have heard some mechanics can do it without removing the starter and just use tippex or marks. However being the first R9M and timing chain i have done i did not want to take any chances and followed the nissan workshop manual.
If i had another engine from a scrapyard to hand i would try to design a tool to lock the crankshaft at the timing chain side by indexing some of the bolt holes for the timing chain cover. However my mate needed this car back in a hurry so i did not have the time to design or 3D print and test a tool.
For any more in depth questions or ones that need photos/diagrams to be sent feel free to send a message on my facebook page:

Is the oil pump chain so slow normal?
@peugeotCitroen2CV
@peugeotCitroen2CV 7 месяцев назад
I am not sure if slow is the right word, if you mean slack then i spoke to a couple of nissan mechanics or mechanics more experience with this engine and they said that slack was normal enough. I had a service manual and i remember looking for something that mentioned changing the oil pump chain but couldn't find it, certainly was not made to be as easy changed.

My heart sank when I watched this - Nissan must have had its engineers figure out how to make this as complicated as possible. My Qashqai+2 has the R9M in it, so far no trouble at 11 years and 192,000 km. But isn't it a good idea to replace the oil pump chain at the same time?
@peugeotCitroen2CV
@peugeotCitroen2CV 7 месяцев назад
Technically its Renault who have their name stamped on the block of this engine, but nissan could have been involved in the development. Ill not blame them either, a lot of manufacturers now use chains. BMW chains into engines with it on the bulkhead side, and then other car companies now use wet belts. I suppose they thought the chain would last the life of the vehicle, but its a modern diesel and extended service intervals, perhaps skipped services can have a detrimental effect on a chains lifespan. The oil pump chain at the time i asked a couple of mechanics who worked on these engines, they said the slack in the oil pump chain was normal, i had a service manual to hand and could not see an easy way to change it, it only really drives the oil pump in one direction so is under less strain than the timing chain which has to maintain perfect synchronisation of the various parts.

@@peugeotCitroen2CV Thanks for the great answer. I meant it looked like Nissan had gone to great lengths to make it difficult to get to the timing chain on the Qashqai by putting other components in front of it - other (Renault) vehicles with the R9M look more straightforward. I see your point about the oil pump chain - a teeny bit of wear isn't critical at all like it is on the timing chain. The official service interval for the QQ is 1 year/30,000 km - which seems like a lot, and I suspect the timing chain is going to be the first component to be affected if people really wait that long (or neglect their oil). Glad I haven't come close!

Hi there, im not sure what the rest of the engine is like i think they are okay. A lot of modern cars can give problems with timing chains. bmw diesels are a lot more work. I think if the car is kept well serviced the chain should be less inclined to wear as quickly although in this instance it is a 10 year old car. Its more involved than a timing belt but a 1.5 K9K would have a similar amount of time needed to do its belt

As the gentleman said. Only the body panels and the wiper arms and covers are the differences. I did it my driveway with common hand tools and torque wrench’s, not at fun job. And be aware of the crank shaft sprocket, the kit I got was with a 33mm and not the 38mm needed.😮

I was following the nissan workshop manual Although there would be some who would happily use a bit of tippex to mark the engine at TDC i wanted to do this properly especially when showing it on a video. If i had to do another one i would try and draw and 3D print a tool to hold the crankshaft by locking it relative to some of the timing cover bolt holes.

@peugeotCitroen2CV
@peugeotCitroen2CV 4 месяца назад
Hi there, i think i went back at some point in the video to correct that? Yes the workshop manual does show the correct place that the gold coloured links are meant to go, although its more crucial that the engine is kept to TDC as the markings on the chain are mainly there as a guide.

Very nice detailed video. I need to change a leaking timing cover on a renault talisman with also the r9m engine. With the help off this video I can tackle this job. Thanks very much. But do I need to lock the engine with this pin behind the starter if I'm only changing the timing cover not the chain? Or can I change the cover without any timing tools? @@AliRaza-jg3hx thanks for the answer. But how can you tighten the crank bolt to the correct torque then? Won't the engine just spin with it. Loosening with an impact is ok for loosening. But you can't tighten it with an impact. It needs a specific torque?

I think they are ok if serviced but you have this chain and the turbo is at the back of the engine. If serviced they probably should be ok, best to ask on the owners clubs and forums. The qashqai, renault kadjar, merc a class, some c classes other cars and the renault trafic and its derivatives use this engine It certainly feels a lot more sprightly than the 1.5 K9K engine, and cant be as bad as anything with a wet belt.

I changed the timing chain on my 1.6 dci on Megane 2014 at 150k km because it was rattling during cold starts. However, the new chain also rattles, and at times, I even need to turn off the engine and restart it to eliminate the rattling sound. Have you encountered a similar case before? Should I consider changing the oil pump as well?
@aditeo78
@aditeo78 9 месяцев назад
the rattling during cold starts might be from oil pump chain that should be changed along with oil pump when timming chain is done .this engine is known for ticking noise at cold start especialy in winter and is comming from hidraulic lifters because oil drain from them overnight . this is normal and the ticking noise should last 2 or 3 seconds until oil pressure builds up .

The definition of life is the bit that is up for debate, much like sealed for life gearboxes. I dare say this life is the life of a lease period, certainly its not engineered like an 80s mercedes diesel engine. However this one may have suffered from the oil not being changed frequently enough or it could just be a weak design, im really not too sure what is the case but the noise was not as bad after fitting the new chain.
