My d d is a 04 murano . rebuilt the cvt twice . its got basic bolt ones and tune . Nissan turned it down because the cvt was maxed out. Anyways I ve beat on it . I ve changed rms front crank seal . and clean my vvts in between oil changes . nothing but mobile 1 . and new valve covers every 2 years . the vq is a beast I wish the vk in my truck was this strong .
All the VQs are great, we see plenty of older products with 200-300K miles on them still running strong in service and coming in on trade. The VQ37 has proven to be really reliable too!
my 2002 nissan altima with the 3.5 v6 (pretty sure a vq engine) is still running strong with 340,000 kilometres on it, although it already has problems burning oil it’s incredibly how that car still runs. vq all day baby
I have 283k miles and counting on my daily-driven 2006 G35 sedan with no issues (that I can't handle). 25k of the miles have been under my ownership. My previous 2005 G35 made it to 265k before it got a bad oil leak, but I'm going to pull that engine and rebuild it for another 2006 G35 coupe (6MT) I have that came with a blown motor. Once I get that going, it's gonna be a track car! I bought both of these cars for $1500 each. They've taken a fair bit of work but I've learned a lot, and I have more faith in my daily than ever. In the end, I'll have two great cars (one of which I autocross/drift), have parted another out, and have done all the work myself. This has been my passion over the pandemic.
Quick note. At 9:50 you mentioned pistons 1 and 6 firing at the same time. Thery dont fire at the same time, but they reach TDC at the same time. They are both on different strokes. So one fires, other intakaes. Love the series xx!
I think from a tuning standpoint the HR is preferred over the VHR because of the lack of the black magic fuckery that is VVEL, but I still love my 370.
this video just made me appreciate my infiniti fx37 even more. from the power delivery to the handling. nissan low key makes masterpieces without people knowing nor appreciates it. Thanks Donut for renewing my love for the car !!
Nissan is like that abusive relationship. When it's good they're so amazing but when it's bad it's real bad. Nissan always seems to be getting ahead and then something just happens, best example their CEO situation. They do amazing things when given the opportunity.
Uploaded on my bday, and as an owner of a vq (370z) and going to school for engineering and seeing the engineering that goes into these engines (and engines in general) being explained, it's almost as if they know me and knew what day it was. Thanks donut media👍
It's good to have class knowledge but you really learn on the job with actual experience. There's lots of old school tricks you really only learn from the old heads.
I personally feel that the vq35 & 37 are among the best v6 engine (reliability & performance) also along with Honda’s j35 & 37. Many Japanese v6s are reliable and can out perform most other v6’s
Also can't forget the Toyota/Lexus 2gr-fse with Direct injection. I have a 2006 is350 with that motor and it's a beast. Makes more hp and torque than the VQ and Honda's J series with 306 hp and 277 lb-ft torque.
My Murano has the VQ35 and if it wasn't for the CVT, that thing would be a beast. I had to replace the trans recently, like everyone else, and started looking into the engine to see if it would last long enough to be worth replacing the trans. Turns out, Nissan actually made a good choice there.
Kind of felt like too much time was spent explaining how an engine works in general rather than on the unique qualities that made the VQ engine itself so unique. But oh well still loved the video and you're VQ impression was spot on. XD
True man. Gear heads that already know how an engine works get bored bc all they explain is how an engine works instead of explaining the unique qualities of the stupid thing 😆😆
@@herrcrazyme8713 I think part of it is that he had a kid, but I think there was some internal stuff about the lower frequency of science garage videos going on too
V6 engines are great, like any other engine. Nissan has been producing amazing engines for a many many years. So of course this modern piece of engineering would be wonderful. Thank you for sharing and I am glad I watched this episode.
13:40 he says the bike moves to a faster gear making it harder to peddle but what he actually shows is it moves to a slower gear making it easier to peddle. Great video, learned a lot
the piston pairs in a six-cylinder DONT fire at the same time... firing order is 1, 5, 3, 6, 2, 4. they fire 60 degrees of a crankshaft rotation apart.
I thought after being a HOME mechanic for 30 years I learned something new. I always thought when two positions are traveling in the same direction they are on opposite strokes as in one would be on the power stroke and the other would be on the intake stroke.
Straight-six engines typically use a firing order of 1-5-3-6-2-4, which results in perfect primary and secondary balance. As stated on wiki. And a nice gif en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Inline_6_Cylinder_with_firing_order_1-5-3-6-2-4.gif
I bought me a 2003 G35 6 MT sedan just because I wanted something fast and still comfy and reliable for under 4 grand. So far no issues and I love it. Didn't even realize it had such a solid engine and transmission.
@@bmw3-er me Either it's just not about actual Engine though, Nissan Fan All the Way, they should Bring Back the Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V, with the VQ and independent rear Suspension and a Turbo on it.
Yup Donut Media School for car people’s. B2B: Engineering Up to Speed: History Money Pit: Shop class Hi Low: Financing Wheel House: Biology Podcast: Assembly Enroll Today
Make this the new shirt! Make it look like an old paper enrollment form/class schedule from the "old days". Column for course name, one for instructor, one for the day it comes on.
Nice video, FYI Ive worked a lot with Subs and Evos, the Evo has a masterpiece of an engine, incorporating all you've said plus a countershaft in a 4 cylinder engine. Absolute masterpiece.
My Nissan VQ-40 4.0L V6 on 2010 Frontier Nismo 6 Speed Manual transmission is now @ 713,501miles and my 2016 Nissan Frontier Pro4X VQ-40 6 Speed Manual Transmission is now @ 173,690miles and they're both running Great. I really used and Abused them and maintained them.
the fact that you could get such an advanced engine (for the time) in a light coupe for like $27k in 2002 always blows my mind man. insane value for the time. honestly havent seen a retail sports car deal since then. they literally just dont make japanese cars like that anymore
I miss my 4th gens! They were a ton of fun and such a comfortable ride. I wanted to drive both until the wheels fell off but the universe had other ideas, I guess.
@@jponz85 i know lol its still a VQ. But wait. werent you that guy on every youtube video claiming the VQ35 is the best engine ever made? and trash talking the genesis V6?
Na, depends which cogs you are looking at. If they were talking about the rear sproket they would be wrong but if they were talking about the front its correct.
Also helps for people at work or other situations! Unfortunately I've noticed their captioner gets a lot of stuff wrong, which is really a disservice to deaf/HOH people.
This would have been a good science garage topic. Maybe an episode specifically for different valve train designs like the freevalve and desmodromics, and chain drive vs belt drive vs gear drive
Owner of the best an last generation of the g37 2013, I can infact say I'll always get another vqhr37 one of the most amazing naturally aspirated engine ever built, keep up with all the maintenance on time an it will treat u back with so much fun
They are arguably still one of the best producer of 6-cylinder engines in the world, their new VR30 motor is damned impressive. There issue is with CVT's and slow updates, which it seems like they are finally started to resolve.
Nissan was special in the early 90s. I rented a Sentra recently, and it was shockingly bad. The Sentra was a good car once upon a time, now it feels incredibly cheap.
haha I love that in the bike animation they actually went into a lower gear, also I just realized that close ratios are actually common on road bikes my rear cassette is 11-32 I think
I just bought a 2009 Infiniti FX35, compared to my Lexus ES350, this engine just sounds AMAZING! The Lexus is very smooth, quiet and powerful. But this engine is just on a different level, it's great. It really changed my mind on Nissan/Infiniti as a brand. I will stick with the VQ throughout my next vehicles.
Even though it's a bit like a trumpet, I think the VQ35 is one of the best sounding engines ever made. It has such a unique sound you can't really mistake it with that many other sounds.
Yeah nah...when the sound your engine make is easily emulated by a musical instrument it's not "performance" oriented...especially since you can get a similar aged V8 that'll make more power and sound much better and get similar mileage (if you're into that)
I have an 06' G35 Coupe. 48k original miles, and it drives and handles amazing. This spec has the RAS, which is an awesome option, that didn't show up till 06'. Not too many G35's out there have it. Thanks for the education. I love knowing what is going on inside the engine and transmission that I'm driving.
@@MA-it3ps hey there!! 👋 thanks for the compliment! The Nissan Factory tech who works on my car was telling me the RAS was a $750 option back in 06' and most people didn't know what RAS was, and didn't understand it. At $750, it was a pricey option...I too believe my car is rare. I put it in the titles often for my channel. Check my channel out, plz!
This has happened with me with other channels, I’ll see the video on my YT feed and once I’m either done watching it or later on I’ll get notified... seems like something with the “algorithm”
I have a love/hate relationships with VQ videos Love the VQ35HR Terrified everyone else will also like it and make them totally unaffordable for lil ol' me 😂
I was expecting some crazy ingenuitive engineering but... its basically just more bolts and a metal frame for more rigidity and strengthened rods? I thought they invented something to prevent the v6 from creating to much vibrations in the first place, not tighten everything up to reduce the symptoms. Or did I miss something? Still a good video but I cant help to feel a little disappointed :D
No. They actually did an absolute shit job in the VQ37. Like, literally shit job. I had a 2010 370Z in 2011. Back when people still used forums, all you would ever read was how harsh the engines would rev. They were absolutely horrible to rev. If you hung the revs near redline; it literally felt like the engine was falling apart. VQ35 was nothing like this.
@Sic Semper Tyrannis That is not entirely true, on each individual cylinder, yes, but in that case any engine vibrates, however using precise counterweights, balance shaft, certain bank angles and sometimes split crank pins it is possible to balance out the entire block. Yes I understand that if it's off by 0.00006 there is gonna be a little vibration, but what I think he meant is that simply making the thing stronger doesn't not make the engine smoother or more balanced in any way.
If parts etc are easily obtained locally I'd recommend building up a high compression sr20ve+t. Good usable power up to around 300kw without touching internals so works out to be cheap as chips
DA NS vk56 swap! If you’re going to go through all of that, might as well upgrade to a v8. I’m thinking of swapping one on my q50. They use the same 7at tranny. If anything do a vq37vhr... too many problems with vq35 in my opinion.
I wouldn't. Honestly for a little bit more money you could do a LS swap. You'll make alot more power and be alot more reliable. And it sounds amazing. Plus its got unlimited upgrade potential. From being N/A with a Cam and Heads making 400+RWHP. To supercharging or turbocharging making 600-800RWHP and being totally reliable. Plus it'll be super easy to sell if you ever wanted to get rid of it.
Sebastian Moses sweet dude, good luck. Rail guns are super cool. I’ve always wondered by the way, is there some crazy stuff going on that stops the ship from throwing itself to the sides when firing big railguns towards port/starboard? Or is it just buoyancy?
I’m happy I’ve been able to drive a 350 with a manual over the years, one of my favorite cars to drive, if you drive one you’ll understand why you hear straight piped 350s all the time revving to the moon
Lmaooo only de owners will know the difference between de, rev up, and hr. If your gonna buy a 350z buy a DE REVUP or HR. Or your de is going to eat your wallet like I eat cheesecake😏. I have a de 03’ Rn but I’m upgrading to a 370z for the engine block.
Every day since i was about 16 i have been learning about Nissan's and it's probably the most favorite of all the manufacture's i love Nissan and Infinity's so many cool features and things you can do. It just never disappoints
I found the but on the transmission to be interesting, i owned a 2008 (vq35hr) for years and felt it was an amazing engine let down by a clunky transmission. Although a lot of that was terrible pedal and hydraulic booster design that was helped with aftermarket pedal assembly
@@BPBomber wait when i commented i this video it was afternoon and that time it was uploded 32 minutes ago, and now it is showing 16 min ago? I guess youtube is broken
I love my '11 G37S Sedan with the AT/7. I put the Stillen Gen3 long tube intake(s), a set of BERK High Flow Cats, and an Invidia Q300 Cat back exhaust on it and its sooo fun!
i have an fx35. All i did was take off the muffler. sounds lower pitched than a straight piped z and i love it. i though about removing some cats but not sure yet. i’ll never straight pipe the thing tho.
Quick note, but the bicycle gearing is mentioned in the opposite direction, when you go to a larger primary gear, you will be going slower for the same petal speed...
Ford's ecoboost in the gt is also in trucks and some other cars... That's nothing special... Mercedes has some diesels in all its sedans, coupes, hatchbacks, vans,...
