So the only problem I had was getting the old gasket off the block, it had gotten hot & melted. After a some scraping with a razor blade & some light sand paper, it was cleaned off. Otherwise, very good video, all the directions were clear & accurate. Only thing I would say is use silicone based lubricant on the clamps. Other than that thanks for the help.
Thanks Aaron! I didn't need a thermostat, but I just replaced my radiator and was struggling with burping it and wasn't getting any heat. That little trick of popping the steam hose near the heater core did the trick to draw that (hopefully) last pocket of air out and the heater is blowing plenty of hot air now. I was beginning to wonder if my problem may have been the thermostat, which led me here.
Hey there Aaron. I just want to thank you and this video, this helped me alot. I had a p0128 and my thermostat was shot the rubber seal part of my thermostat was preventing it to close so it was in the stuck open position. If it wasn't for this video I would have pay a mechanic to have the job done. Happy New year's to you and family
I just purchase a 2015 Frontier 145000 miles and I plan to change out the coolant before winter. I am wondering if I should go ahead and replace the thermostat at the same time since it has a lot of miles on it and I'll be draining the system anyway. Thoughts?
Wish me luck. I’m about to tackle this next weekend. Thankfully my pathfinder still runs great and gets me to work. Hope this is as easy as the other work I’ve done to it. Thank you.
This is a great video. Very easy to follow and understand. Going to replace my thermostat tomorrow on the 2007 Frontier.. been thru a lot with that truck.
Awesome video brother ! I just changed out my thermostat following this video ! I was also wondering why there wasn’t any hot air coming out . I’ll definitely be checking the steam line soon . But I just wanted to so thanks bro 🤘🏻 definitely appreciate the help
How many hours does it take to change a thermostat on the Nissan Xterra. Been having the same problem I can't get no hot air out coming out of the vents it throws really good cold air on the AC side wondering what the problem could be?
2001 Nissan xterra, I just replaced the radiator and that code came up, so I was wondering if replacing the thermostat will erase the code( I'm asking cause it is the same code but, it said something about throttle relay or something like that)
Hi Aaron. I recently replaced my thermostat and coolant because at idle for more than A few minutes the temp will begin to rise and air conditioning will start to blow warm. I also had the A/C system checked for leaks and topped up the refrigerant. So after replacing thermostat the problem is still there. I checked the clutch fan and it seems to be good. Problem I think and I'm hoping you have an answer from experience is thermostat is closing for to long of A period and allowing the temp to climb to high? Only reason I say this is yesterday temperature was around 35C and I was monitoring it And heard the system close and instantly the hoses became rock hard and heat blowing out from fan was scorching hot as well as temp gauge climbing and A/C started blowing warm. Sorry for the story. Any ideas? Thanks for the video. And any response
For water pump replacement CHANGE YOUR OIL BEFORE YOU BLEED THE COOLING SYSTEM. I got the engine up to temp to bleed the system. Then I went and got the stuff for an oil change. I remove the oil cap and it was creamy white !!!!! I immediately drained the oil and it was also completely contaminated!!! I drained it changed the oil and filter. Ran it for 3 minutes. Drained it AGAIN STILL WHITE . Went to the store got two more filters and more oil. Filled it again with new filter and 3/4 quart of trans fluid let it run for 15 minutes drained it and it got better. DRAINED SWAPPED FILTER AGAIN ran it for 10 minutes drained it and then did a final filter and fill. I have videos and photos of the whole ordeal. PLEASE PEOPLE DO NOT START UNTIL YOU DRAIN OIL AND REPLACE FILTER. There was very light gold flake in the pan. Which means BEARING material. Final oil change I also added a quart of Lucas oil stabilizer. I hope I'm able to get some years out of the engine. Prices are going up for replacements and they all have higher mileage. $2500 for 140k mile replacement engines..
It’s located on the backside of the engine block almost in the middle of where there windshield is halfway. It’s kind of a pain to get your hand maneuvered to get to it if you don’t want to take a bunch of hoses off. I just did mine and kept scraping the back of my hand on a little metal plate that you need to get behind. Once you locate it the rest is simple. Hope this made sense.
Nice video Aaron. I just swapped the radiator and t-stat on my '07 frontier, but am having overheating issues. I'm going to better bleed the system of air bubbles, but I've also read aftermarket t-stat are garbage and only OEM parts work properly. Do you have any thoughts on that? Cheers mate!
I wouldn't mess with the steam line, on .y Frontier it was brittle plastic and I ended up having to replace that hose as well, the new one I picked up was at least metal
@@GeoRell I'm not sure, its been a minute but I was able to get that part at auto zone that day, I think it's prob a coolant bypass or something similar
I think my problem is an air bubble in the line. It's good these were engineered to fail open. But my issue is intermittant over heating. Not blowing hot air at idle. Might need to do a coolant change instead of doing the whole thermostat change
So I got a fluctuating temp and my hot air takes a while to get warm. But I don't have a check engine light. Possibly my Thermo is going out? Has 81k miles
So my 2015 Nissan Xterra isn't displaying any codes but I still don't have heat, so I don't think it's the thermostat, what else should I be looking for? Thanks
Do you have a video on how to replace that hose that you removed to bleed the system? The jar was cracked so I had to replace it. It came with that hose but I couldn't get it off because It was pinned under the fuse box which I couldn't figure out how to remove. I'm also surprised you were able to remove that hose without breaking that plastc barb on that little canister looking piece going into the firewall. It crumbled when I tried to wiggle the hose off. I had to replace heater hose assy across the firewall, but lucky NAPA's replacement was Aluminum. Much better part than factory!
Hey I have a question for you, we have the Nisan NV2500 and it over heated last week.. and I noticed that the cap on the coolant reservoir tank isn’t a pressure cap...? Should it be? It doesn’t make slot of sense to me that it isn’t? I got the vehicle used so I’m wondering if that’s just my problem as to why it over heated all my coolant just bailed out overflow ?? Wondering if you have any input on that
Nice vid, straight to the point. Some good tips in there👍. Have you used the vacuum bleed/ fill setup before? It works great, no trapped air bubbles in the system
hey Arron nice video. watched other videos showing shroud and fan removal for easier access to thermostat. l have 2012 Pathfinder. Can I do it the way you show. looks easier your way. thanks Neil.
I'm able to turn the engine light off by unhooking the battery cables (both negative and positive cables, touch them together for about a minute, put them back on and your light should be out.
My engine temperature goes up and down (unstable)the temperature rises when the rpm rises. Is this a sign of a bad thermostat? I don’t think I have any leaks in the cooling system.
Hi! I don’t have an engine code but when I start my frontier the temperature gauge fluctuates at the beginning and then stops and fluctuates again here and there while I’m driving. Do you think that’s the thermostat going out? If it is do you think I should wait till I receive the code or change it right away?
is it ok to bypass the thermostat, i have mo more thermostat in my car i cancel it, i live in a place where always the temperature is high and we run ac all time
Hey, mine just went out yesterday, gonna be working on it today. 2018 Frontier as well. I can't completely tell from the video, did you need to get under the truck to do this?
Would anyone here happen to know the normal operating temp or an avg temp to keep an eye out for. It's like 30 degrees out and my temp during normal running is between 190-200.
Hey we changed the thermostat but when I run the car the antifreeze is coming out of the reservoir. We checked for leaks and we checked there was no air. What could it be ? 😔 this is so frustrating!
There was work done on my coolant system before I bought my frontier. At idle I sometimes get very little heat coming out of the heater. I'm assuming there's air in the system, how do I bleed it with the rad already full?
I had the same problem. This may not be the best answer but I just kept filling my reservoir and also while cold grab the hoses coming off the radiator with the cap off and squeeze them to burp the air out. After doing this a few times and adding more coolant I was able to have hot heat, where as before I had none.
Hey Aaron, i have a 2015 frontier and it's overheating and losing water but there are no visible signs of leaking anywhere, would this be a thermostat problem or something else. Thanks.
If it’s loosing water, you most likely have a leak or bad head gasket. Any reputable shop should be able to perform a test to rule out a bad head gasket. Oreillys has a rental tool some stores have that they can loan you. I would like to rule out a head gasket issue before looking for the leak www.oreillyauto.com/detail/b/evertough-4771/tools---equipment-16488/rental-tools-16837/rental-tools--engine---clutch-19166/2a06ea1d698c/rental-tools-evertough-block-tester/67094/4700290
no codes, no heat either, 2012 Xterra runs for 15 min, temp up to normal and still no heat. could this be bad thermostat, bad core, or flush the heater core? help
Curious before I start this project.... sometimes my heater doesn’t work.. when it does, it’s only hot while I’m accelerating. It gets cold almost instantly when at a red light. I’ve burped the lines, and the coolant level is between min and max. I can try burping one more time... but does this happen of the thermostat needs replaced? Or does that sound like I still have a bubble in the system? 2012 xterra pro4x Thanks!
Nice job is it electronic cause i didnt get any code my car is pathfinder 2007 4 liter r51 my car is coil 86C always and no overheating touch the wood so my electric fan for ac wont kick at all but even when switching on ac itll coil but i didnt see electrical fan kick on 😒
i had a little trouble understanding your post, the electric fan will only come on for two reasons, if the engine coolant temp rises above 212 degrees or if the pressure in the a/c system goes above 225 psi. is the pathfinder overheating
Great video. I have a 2015 Frontier with the 4.0 and the dealership said replacing the thermostat would be $582! Needless to say, I’ll be doing it myself, even if I take all day. One thing I’m wondering is, I was told I needed the blue coolant, but someone said that the “All Vehicle” coolant from Preston was the same, just a different color and lower price. Which is true?
I have a Question: on my 2011 Xterra the reservoir tank and the radiator caps are different. One has a spring and a stamp reading 108 kpa, the other is simple, no spring and no pressure label. Should the labeled cap be on the radiator or on the reservoir tank. I’m curious because the simple cap, the one without the spring was on the radiator and the other was on the reservoir tank. Please Tell me what u think. Thank you.
The spring cap goes on your reservoir and the cap with nothing goes on your radiator. Do not mix them up or your xterra will over heat. I did this on accident many years ago and learned the hard way!
Great video, buddy,i have 2014 exterra, but only 20 0000 miles on it,did replace the coolant according to Nissan manual every 4 years if not mistaken, was curios do i need t/s also with antifreeze change?I think they recommend that, but i have no problem with the motor temp in any way.
No, you do not need to replace the thermostat when doing just a coolant change. When these thomostats fail. The fail in the open position. So it’s hard for the motor to reach operating temperature. Hope this helps
@@AaronHinesAuto great video I have a question , what's the normal operation engine temperature, I have a 2008 Nissan pathfinder and I hooked a scanner and the temperature shows between 210 and 228. Is this normal?
Hello, I have a Suzuki 2009 Equator, last winter it would sometimes not blow hot air but the temp gauge said all was normal, so I assumed when I added coolant in the Spring it would clear up, and it did, but this winter I took it to the dealer because it was again not blowing hot air. The dealer flushed the engine and said it was a air pocket, but now the gauge is not working. The dealer says I need to bring it back ASAP or the engine may overheat, but the bill to replace a thermostat is $550, is this because of the labor?
Thermostat can be purchased for about $30. So most of that price is labor, and new coolant of course. You can do the job yourself in your driveway in a couple hours using basic hand tools. How long has it been since the flushed the coolant? And by you saying the temperature gaUge Isnt working you’re meaning it doesn’t move from cold? If this is the case you need to check the coolant level in both your radiator and overflow tank. If the coolant is low enough to cool it will not touch the temp sensor. The sensor is meant read water temp. If air is touching The sensor due to a air pocket you will get a false reading in the engine could in fact overheat. Without you knowing until it’s too late
@@AaronHinesAuto Thanks, yes, the needle does not move from C, which it did before I took it in. They also said they thought it was an air pocket but did flush and refill the radiator. The mystery to me is why they did not run the engine and see that the gauge was now not working. If it is the sensor I just want to know why the labor is so much, you said for me it would be a few hours, I will need to talk the dealer and see why it would take so long, looking at the picture you have and the procedure you have on video. I'll find out more tomorrow, Thx
@@AaronHinesAuto They managed to say they could have replaced it, but said when they went through all the diagnostics after the repair, it showed no problems, although I noticed the gauge not working immediately after I picked it up.I guess to appease me they didn't charge 600 but only 420 for the thermostat, but the lesson is you should always replace the thermostat when (maybe you can fill in the blank here). I think that would give people true knowledge of a vehicle, many years back I had a mechanic I trusted and when my car hit 80k I asked him what to do, he gave me a list of procedures and said it would be a lot cheaper to have them all done, since the labor to open up the engine was already done. I spent 4k, but the car ran with no repairs for the next 100k.
Hey Aaron, I have a 2005 Pathfinder and am starting to see a rise in temperature (gauge) when stuck in traffic for too long. Was thinking it may be a thermostat issue but you said they go to full open when bad. What would you recommend checking? During normal operation, the temperature stays at a normal temperature range. I've not done any service to the cooling system since new. Thanks in advance for your help.
First thing i would do is check coolant level. Make sure it’s not low. Next would be your fan clutch. When you say stuck in traffic. I assume you are taking about low speed? You could have a lack of air speed across the radiator. Which would point to the fan clutch. Next I would guess the thermostat. They most likely fail in the open position. However I have seen a few thermostats fail to open all the way. Which limits the amount of water that is able to move to the coolant system.
@@AaronHinesAuto any truth to there being a special coolant for Nissan vehicles? If not, will top off with what my local auto-parts carries. Many thanks for your suggestions.
Any green universal 50/50 mix will work With Nissans coolant. There’s nothing special about nissans coolant. It’s just their own mix. And it’s compatible with any other coolant besides Dexcool (gm)
@@AaronHinesAuto Sorry to take so long to reply. As embarrassing as it is, I did find the trouble to be low coolant. The idea to check simplest things first proved to be the right one. Thanks for your help. No doubt, you saved me time and money, much appreciated.
