Nissan Xterra Shift Lever Repair with Bushing 

Pro tip: use a wire clothes hanger to "hook" the shift cable through the eye with the bushing already lined up on the hanger. That way you don't have to deal with the frustration of dropping the bushing into the console and having it disappear on you. Once the bushing is installed, you can just pull the hanger out and voila! Thanks so much for this SUPER HELPFUL video, man. I called my mechanic and they wanted $325 for the repair because the Nissan dealer told them they had to replace the entire shift cable. This was just what the doctor ordered. Thanks so much!

This just happened to my 05 xterra yesterday. I was thinking my whole transmission might have gone bad and I was looking at several thousand dollars to repair. However, after watching this vid, I guarantee this is the problem. So much better than I feared yesterday. Thank you so much for this video, it was very well done. Very helpful advice, I thought my transmission went out when it was not changing gears. My mechanic was going to charge me $300 to fix it. It cost me a whole $15 dollars for a simple shift cable bushing replacement. Thanks again.

Woo hoo!! This video saved me from being stuck. Although I couldn’t get the part at any regular auto parts store, we were able to use your safety wire trick to get the Xterra home while we wait for the part to arrive. Also saved $$$ by fixing this ourselves. 😊

I was stuck in a parking lot and you just helped me get home. Thanks for helping me diagnose the issue. I was able to hold the shifter against that post manually in order to shift it in the drive and drive home without taking the center console completely apart, I had to take the flashing under the shifter and shift it up and sideways in order to get access to that post in order to hold it in place while shifting

You are absolutely my hero. At the gas station after gassing up the car would not shift. I quickly assumed it was the shift cable. Your video popped up first. I could pry the right side enough to get it hooked back on and drive home. With you video I pulled the console, ordered the part and temporarily wire tied it in place. Finding those screws would have been tough with your video. Thank you again.

Thanks for the detailed video.. I just did it a bit differently. I only removed the cup holder, center console frame and the gear handle and cover. After that I released the gear and pulled it all the way down with the cable attached. Then I managed to pull the cable up and insert the bushing (which was the hardest part). Thanks alot again.

I had the hardest time with this. I wanted to comment in case another person had stuck a hard time. My hands are cut up, I stabbed myself with the screwdriver multiple times, I lost the bushing 3 times. This was the hardest thing I've done and I've replaced Cam sensors. So, using a coat hanger to hold the bushing on the cable is good, but it got in my way more than anything and when I finally got it on, it was without the hanger. Stretch it out with pliers really good and dunk that bad boy in lube . Then it worked perfectly. Good luck!

As everyone says, it made the repair do-able for "regular" folks who get PO'd that Nissan will only replace the entire cable. My fingers aren't as strong as you youngsters, so I couldn't get the bushing to go in. So I dropped in hot water for a couple of minutes, relubed it, and after eating some spinnach to give me PopEye type strength to my finger, it seated. SO think about hot water to make the bushing more pliable.

good vid. have same problem with nissan maxima 2001. but it never came unhooked. the symptoms were a no-start like when a range sensor goes bad or needs adjustment. it been like that for 4 years. if it happened in P I would have to move it to N and back to P or start in N and it started. as a workaround

Thanks! I didn't have to watch the whole video and I repaired it with plastic tubing. I cut a small piece slipped over metal and the shift cable moves freely and thic enough to keep it from slipping off. I expect for it to last forever hehe. Different car, same shit. Js because this doesn't happen in the friendliest place.

I have the same problem. I was told the shift cable broke and had to be replaced. $450. They never checked the grommet.

2007 xterra pulled out in reverse, went to drive but it stayed in neutral, had to push it back in the parking spot I’m assuming this is the problem 😩

I heard a ping when my shifter stopped shifting. How do I know if it's the shifter end or the transmission end that has failed? The transmission is new.

Replaced it now won’t start. Says it’s stuck on second gear on the dash.

Now the shift stayed in parking in the screen but is in rear...has it happened to someone?

Will I mess up my car by just disassembling like you did here, and it ends up not being that?
