My mom had this surgery plus they had to remove a portion of her stomach because she had really bad adhesions that they had to scrape for 6 hours. She had a couple of issues afterwards with her esophagus being too narrow so they had to go back down and stretch it. She’s been doing fairly well; this was probably 20 years ago. I think I’m having the opposite problem of my esophagus not opening so the food can enter my stomach. I had a Barium swallow that showed mild Presbyesophagus which is abnormal peristalsis due to the nerves not functioning properly. My didn’t detect any significant reflux changes which is good but my stomach feels nasty all the time and my stomach sticks out right below my sternum. I have this annoying gurgling that comes out of my mouth every time I even swallow my saliva and you can actually hear it if you’re close enough to me. I found a gastroenterologist closer to my home that I’m going to go see and maybe they can figure it out. I have to stop eating or eat very lightly for several days when this gets really bad as that’s been the only thing that seems to help. When your digestion is messed up, it’s really depressing. I’m worried that whatever it is has gone on too long and there could be permanent damage that can’t be reversed. I also have Fibromyalgia and so everything gets thrown under that label. I had a ruptured Appendix 5 years ago and a Cholecystectomy with post operative hemorrhage so I could also have adhesions that could be causing a stricture. I don’t know what to think anymore. I took Prilosec for a while but it didn’t do anything which leads me to believe that my issue is more anatomical versus actual GERD. My sister told me her friend was diagnosed with stomach cancer er after being on those pills for 20 years so please be care if you game that medication. I thought it was supposed to be a short term thing to take but what do I know.

@@zaqwanbadli9697no I genuinely think the surgery saved my life. I was taking pills for 20 years, I even had calcification scars on my lungs due the acid reflux at night. Since I had the surgery, no acid reflux, no medication at all, no burping every 20 seconds, clear nose without congestion’s, even the supposed IBS and inflamación of the instentines GONE. Yes the surgery is tough, but if is done by a good doctor is seriously life changing. Good luck

Thank you for sharing your story. I am here 5 days out from my hiatal hernia repair and Tiff procedure. I have been on acid reflux medications for over 20 years and recently went to the ear, nose and throat doctor because I had a scratch of sorts. I guess like an ulcer in my throat and he said that it appeared to be from acid burns. He sent me to the gastro doctor and he did a upper endoscopy procedure and said that he could see where I was having some erosion from the stomach acid. I also found out that the anti -acid types of medication like pantoprazole nexium omeprazole are not intended to be long-term drugs so the goal was to have me off of those. He recommended the tip procedure because it actually reformed the passageway that keeps the acid in the stomach and not flowing back into the esophagus or throat area. After the procedure, I can say that the most painful part is the laparoscopic incisions from the hiatal hernia repair. They are very tender and I too needed to make sure that I had something across my stomach at times to move. So I started to use one of my weight loss body wraps because that's all that I had at home. I wasn't recommended ahead of time to get any kind of wrap to support my stomach. Like you said, it is very painful to laugh after this procedure not because of the esophagus but because of the surgical cuts for the laparoscopic hiatal hernia repair. The gas from the laparoscopic procedure is awful . My throat has been tender because the machine used to go down the throat obviously irritated it. I am still having a dull ache on the left side of my throat and like you said I had a very bad pain on the left side of the back of my neck. I will make sure to ask the doctor why that is. After the procedure, I had esophageal spasms frequently for the first 3 days fortunate for me they only lasted one to three seconds, but those one to three seconds were very intense and would stop you in your track our conversation. I wish I had known about the liquid hydrocodone. I would have requested that instead of the pills, however, I only took them for the first two to three days because they constipate me so bad and my digestive system has never been the best. I received diazepam what they consider a Valium to help with the esophageal spasms. It also helped me to sleep and relax so that was very helpful. I am on a 6 week liquid diet where I will only be able to have soft mush foods like potatoes by weeks five and six. The reason I like the tiff procedure was because it is incisionless. There is no cutting of the esophagus. It's basically stretching in folding with a clamp to keep that fold in place. I have not had a hard time swallowing things but do need to Make sure that the things I am eating are very thinned out. I am praying that this procedure will fix my gastro issues!.

I was on pantoprazole for over 5 years due to a hiatal hernia/gerd. Back in March I realized it was causing my irregular heartbeat/palpitations/chest pains so I stopped it. The gerd has gotten so bad I can barely eat without getting nauseous sometimes even throwing up. Swallowing has become incredibly difficult and I am actually losing my sense of taste due to the acid damaging my mouth so I am finally having this done. I’m been taking Omperazole and many others for nearly 15 years. A CT was done for others reasons and that’s when they found a small hiatal hernia. I had an ALIF done in 2012, and there’s a small umbilical hernia but not bad, u will see if the doctors I’ll fix that. I was leaning towards the Nissen , then I watched a few videos of the TIF , I don’t want to be bloated, etc.., being a nurse we are our own worse critics but I do want to make sure I choose the best one and would love to finally stop taking PPI’s!!!! I’m sure most of us here want the same? Tyvm for your video.

I watched Dr. William Barnes MD and he was very incite-full of the Nissen and TIF, I was leaning towards the Nissen until he told me in his 30 plus years of GERD operations 70% aren’t happy with the outcomes. There’s no belching/expulsions gas. The Tif is making me wonder if you can still get GERD? I will continue researching, but I do know I need to weigh risk over reward. Personally speaking PPI’s, have wreaked my body to the absolute core. I still advocate to whom will listen to steer clear.

15 years is a long time for PPIs. I'm surprised all they found is a small hiatal hernia if you've been dealing with acid reflux for that long. I've been taking PPIs for about 12 years. But about 3 years ago I started halving them and they still worked for me. Did you go through with the Tif?

My Laparoscopic hernia repair with Fundiplication is scheduled for three hours but about half my stomach is in my chest. Considering each of my knee replacements only took about 90 minutes. Three hours is a long operation, especially for what is considered elective surgery in my country. The surgeon will be using dissolvable mesh so I expect that will take longer stitching in place. I have had many, many surgeries and I am not looking forward to this one at all. My first arthroscopy on both knees at once had the worse pre op affect on me. Having pain in both legs at the same time was the worse thoughts. The thought, the night before, actually sent my entire body into spasms, I had to give in and go to bed in order to get through to the next day. It is amazing what the body can cope with. I do know with Laparoscopic gas, moving around helps to dissipation the gas. My first one, I honestly thought I was having a heart attack the first night after surgery. Laparoscooies were relatively new back in the late 70s and patient education wasn't like it is today. Also we are benefitting from hearing first hand, patient accounts, so thank you, you have been a big help in helping me to prepare mentally for this challenge.

@@realgold8290 I had my surgery on December 30th 2021. 3 days in hospital, on a feeding tube and all the other bells and whistles of tubes in me. It was a painful recovery but I was back to work on extremely light labour after 2 weeks, and by choice as I’m self employed, so o could t afford to stay home for 6 weeks. The starvation diet was 6 weeks though and I was down 12 lbs. You can’t remove the Barrett’s as that is weakened skin lining . The risk of cancer doesn’t change after surgery due to the fact that the lining is still weak, it just doesn’t get worse providing you don’t smoke and your careful with alcohol intake. what the surgery does is creates a new sphincter with your stomach so the acid doesn’t rise back up. I also had the hernia repair. I that 6 weeks recovery my mom flew down to help and my dog passed away just a week after my mom left. I would go through all that pain again just to replay those 6 weeks with them both here.

@@twiceuponatime886 sorry to hear about your dog. Mine passed away during the height of the pandemic. It was rough too. Sounds like it was a very long process for you. We're you concerned about the weight loss because that's a lot of weight to lose in a short time or did your doctor warn you that would happen. I imagine by starvation diet you mean you mostly on liquids for 6 weeks. I don't know if I could go through that. People usually only do juice cleanse or a detox for one or two weeks and say it's pretty tough, so I can't imagine 6 weeks. You say you were back to work within 2 weeks. But we're you still in a lot pain at that point? And are you a drinker/smoker? I've barely touched either in the past 5 years just because every time I smoked or drank alcohol, I felt sick. I'm mostly worried about bloat worsening. I heard for some people after the nissen because they can't release gas by burping that becomes more significant and my stomach pain from bloating is already an 8 or 9 sometimes. I have to eat really small meals and graze just to keep it from happening regularly. Well it's been 3 and half months. I hope your quality of life has gone up since then. Hernias can cause a lot of pain and I'm sure having no reflux is a god send. I just have to get the nerve up to do it too.

Hi I have a hiatal hernia possibly for my h-pylori infection it's to the point where if I eat I get pressure in my chest especially when sitting. Constant burping, nausea, possible barrets, non-obstructive schatzi ring. I've had a Holter monitor done and I get a bunch of PVCs and extra heart beats, I believe are associated with the hernia because they both started at the same time. I also been having a circulation issue, fingers from second knuckle moving up are white when fingers are extended and have been for months however they are slightly less now after getting rid of the bacteria so idk if it's still inflammation. It''s also affecting my vagus nerve my emotions are all over the place anytime I feel any type of emotion I get a fast heart rate and PVCs I hope they fix it. I can't even be aroused because the same issue. Could be hormonal. It's affecting my quality of life immensely.

Has the surgery helped your anxiety? I have been recently diagnosed with a hiatal hernia and the way I found out was because the reflux was causing irregular heartbeat. Went to see a cardiologist first for it and then a gastroenterologist who found the hernia through endoscopy. I’ve been having panic attacks for a month now. It’s debilitating

I just go dx with a hiatal hernia..after 4 weeks of hell . I thought it was anaphylactic shock because my throat felt like i was closing. I felt like i was choking, ER doctors had audacity to say it was physiological. Then on the 2nd week i couldnt swallow anymore. I finally got to see the ENT and she said my throat was very swollen and red .Do you happen to know why GERD/HIATAL HERNIA cause DYSPHAGIA? Mines has been really bad for these past 2 weeks i can only eat liquids and mashed foods. I had my endoscopy yesterday and waiting to see my doc next week to know what the plan will be. I saw my allergist last week he immediately knew my throat was inflamed by acid reflux.

I’ve been sticking to a strict diet since my last episode with gerd. Gerd can get so bad that it just feels like your choking and having trouble swallowing for hours and sometimes days it seems. If your able to avoid surgery, stick to the medication and a diet! A lot of us say we try to diet but trying isn’t enough, you must stick with it. You have cheat days where you feel like your gerd feels good enough that you can sneak that fatty food, then reality hits that you still have gerd. Just stick to the diet, I eat chicken (never fried), fruits, vegetables, fish, oatmeal’s, that’s it. No coffee, no teas, no sodas, none of that crap, and especially NO fast food 🤷‍♂️ all the FDA approved garbage in those foods are no good for you. Anyways, some of us can’t avoid surgery so that may be the route to go. For now, if you just have gerd symptoms that are bearable, stick to the diet, meds and you should be alright. That’s what I’m trying.

I had this surgery in 2005 after going through extensive testing and medicine trying before they would do my surgery because of how invasive it is and the changes it involves. I suffered for 8 years with acid reflux. Meds would help for awhile then stop working. Long story short the last thing they did before agreeing the nissan was i had to have tubes inserted down my throat and wear this monitor for 24 hours to see how much acid episodes i had in a 24 hour period. The results were after 24 hours I had acid reflux 23 hours 28 minutes even when i didn't feel it!! I would have the surgery again even though I no longer can throw up and still get choked when eating certain things or certain times.

Hi There! I have a feeling I should make another video on this, but I would start off by having a conversation with your Gastro Specialist. You will need their recommendation to a surgical doctor before you can qualify for the surgery. I had done everything my doctors asked of me and more. It was after 4 years did I push my doctor for a recommendation to a surgeon and I had my surgery 2 months later. Make sure you find one that specializes in gastro surgeries. Just because a surgeon says they can do a surgery doesn't mean they are a right fit to do YOUR surgery.
