What a Great Shamisen solo. I have often tried to copy this on my own Shamisen but this example is really something special. Just this solo alone had a huge impact on me as a Shamisen Player for many many years.
The shamisen has such a wonderful sound to it..it's one of my favorite traditional Japanese instruments to listen to. I started off my love of Japan thanks to old school anime from my mom and Kaiju movies with my dad, and my own love of games when I was very young, I moved into loving the history as I got older and learned more and I'd love to just go on a tour one day from one corner to the other and just see all the sights. But one thing I can honestly say I love the most is the music, it's always very relaxing to hear the traditional music.
"tsugaru jongara bushi" Is my favorite shamisen piece.... And so many people gonna come here after mashiro no oto(these snow White notes).... I really want more and more people to know about this because it's really so good.
'Hey,Teuchi-sama! You know that fresh sound you've been looking for?' 'Yeah,Hiroshi-kun?' 'Well listen to this!!!' God you know it's over when the Sakura starts falling and even the guy next to you is just in awe. I can feel the emotion in this and I just wish this could happen in real life.
It's an animated movie about a blind boy learning how to play the shamisen, and you follow him through his life of creating a new style of playing, basically. It's a really good, if a bit slow, movie.
this scene itself makes it a superior series than Mashiro 2021 reason being that it didn't cut off the Shamisen out for flash backs or side characters to give their inner thoughts about the sound. thats my biggest gripe against Mashiro as it consistently did this when anybody started playing. theres always someone speaking every 20 seconds and i just wanna focus on the Shamisen. the fact this scene soley focused the player and his music makes me smile Though to be fair, Mashiro could be considered drama first, music secondary bcos of that reason
***** I was talking about the strings. I just realised I said the strings do not CHIP or break haha. I really meant "The strings do not break". An Ivory Bachi might break them more
In the actual movie, Nitaboh breaks his original shamisen from plying it two hard. He has to get a special thick-necked shamisen made for his style of playing. I've never even picked up a shamisen, so I wouldn't know from experience, I just thought I would explain the logic they used in the anime.
And this is where black culture and Japanese culture intertwine the two groups take inspiration from each other a lot in media but idk if y’all have heard someone spit bars over shamisen it’s e l a v a t I n g
I must say... and I do so as a person completely lacking in actual knowledge of the instrument and the culture around it music wise... but... many of these I seek out and listen the musician will at one or more points let out a very ... guttural "HWAH!" kinda sound. I have wondered if that is word I don't know that's just that particular artist "owning" the song... if it's meant to be there but maybe a timing thing... etc. What I LOVE about it is that to me it seems the same as a Keyah!! that a martial artist might make at times to focus and or release power etc. I guess that's my point, I wonder if that is in fact what it is even in part... :) Also, after hearing this I want to cry AND fight evil :)
Worse yet... the poor guy next to him you can tell it's like a contest or something and he suddenly (like you said... Oohhh??!!) cus he realizes he just go OWNED and it's just the beginning.
Charles Mills I think that is the idea, the guttural "Hah!" is letting out energy and giving more energy into the playing...releasing and focusing the energy as you put it. I don't claim to know for sure, but it does make a lot of sense.
+Charles Mills If you watch or ever watched anime like Dragon Ball, I'm sure you've met the term "Kiai shout", which is a release of Ki, spiritual energy, to enhance either an object or the own spiritual presence, and/or make others feel your spiritual presence. It also exists in a few martial arts styles, at least I know that it exists in karate.
@MasterAlec Its movie and it kicks butt. I watched it at a film festival years ago an audience that doesn't watch or give a poop about Anime gave it a standing ovation.
Just love that instrument.......played it myself for a few......but then i woke up whaha. shamisen ...awesome instrument though can listen to the yoshida brothers for example all day lol
never seen this before, was looking up shamisen stuff. totally teared up. I don't know much about japan, but i feel like through the sound and images of this, you get a small feel for the way of life and how deeply this music can affect you. whooo boy! much love and respect to other cultures!

I honestly want to know what the outfit he wears is called, plus, amazing, just amazing. This made me emotional just listening to it, and I've never seen the movie. This has entitled me to watch it
As others have commented already, this is beautiful beautiful beautiful and did bring a tear to my eye. Gonna get the movie now. Some say it's yoshida brothers others say it's not... Who has the real answer??
+Taro Toth (Tarototh) It is a solo. How a solo can be played by two brothers. In the credist list appears the name of the GREAT 上妻 宏光(あがつま ひろみつ) Agatsuma Hiromitsu.
Ok so I have shit hearing and if I’m not wearing headphones I don’t always pick up pitch or tone changes and I didn’t wear headphones watching this so for half the fucking video all I could hear was the constant sound of those stupid fucking one note pipes you hit on the floor that they made you use in music class from middle school....
the next shamisen animation i expect is Zenitsu's from Kimetsu no Yaiba. It's a gag scene, and might not be this good, but i still look forward to it 😂
There is a new one right now called Those Snow White Notes. I have only seen the first two episodes so far, but it is not too bad. You may want to check it out if you have not seen it yet. The first episodes are free (with ads of course) on Crunchyroll at the moment.
That has about as much relevance as saying, "I love Beethoven!," when you're listening to Mozart. Just because one uses the same musical instrument does not mean you should generalize the musician and their music.
hallowfication X It's not from Yoshida Brothers. Nitaboh was a real person. He was a blind monk from the Tsugaru Area in Hokkaido. The piece he's playing in the movie is a famous Tsugaru-jamisen piece. I'm pretty sure the Yoshida brothers played the piece before, but so has Chie Hanawa, Kevin Kmetz, Kyle Abbot, maybe even Kineie Nami, and she plays Nagauta-Jamisen
@roockage actually if you think about the story, this scene in particular is all about fighting and super powers. The Shamisen player Nitaboh is in fact battling against a rival player who is threathening to discredit his Shamisen style. Only one performer will emerge triumphant. So there-you see this is in fact a FIGHT to a death(artistic death of course). and the Shamisen itself is a mysterious instrument which requires super powers to produce even one clear note. so there you have it!
I could go Karate or some Aikido if it would make you feel better since it's a Japanese instrument I guess... :( Apparently my wit did not come through my comment :) The music is bad ass that's all I meant :)
