Nitecore killed it with the p23i, really nice beam profile for an sft70 in such a small reflector. The nitecore could be someones only flashlight and imo is actually a good value. Convoy is obviously better value considering only performance and you can get two different versions plus batteries and charger for the same price as the nitecore but I see both as excellent choices. A really great budget charger is the Xtar PB2S, it can be had for only $15 and will also work as a power bank with quick charge 3.0. I have other chargers and still bought the pb2s just because it's a versatile charger for a great value, I'd suggest anyone with a good amount of batteries to have one as a backup power bank.
Hi Thomas, thank you for the suggestion on the Xtar PB2S. I have a VC8 given to me by Tim McMahon, another torch enthusiast from Melbourne.. when I first started getting into lights. Nitecore is on the right track for sure and we're at the stage now where we can get the best of both worlds in terms of throw and high lumens. More efficiency/less heat and it'll be perfect.
@@DarrenYeoYT the power bank function was the reason I decide to buy one, it's a great feature and it also recharges batteries really quick. Depending on the usb power brick you are using it can do 5-9 volts and 2 amps or 12 volts and 1.5 amps. I just don't understand how they are making any money on it, quick charge and pd 3.0 in and out, nice display, magnetic cover, usb c, packaged and shipped for as cheap as $15.
Thanks I'll probably get it, my Xtar VC4 is still working flawlessly, I think it's like the same price, I bought it seems like 15 years ago, thank you, I wrote that down...I'll probably lose the note, should just order it now lol apparently it came out in 2018 and im terrible at guaging time lol but i love the vC4. Probably like that power bank one better though ;). Hope you guys are doing good. I really need to order a convoy, and an emisar D4k I think lol. The emitter choices are so vast I'm I'm so particular I'm a bit wishing I could see in person, what setups would you all get with the D4k for creeping around and exploring, sorry I'll shut up
I've never been impressed with Nitecore build quality, nothing close to Olight & Acebeam. Convoy is not stellar, but more than acceptible for the price. Proprietary cells are a deal breaker in any light. If you want on board charging in Convoy, get M21F. Essentially the same model with the addition of a Type 'C' plug. As to the beamshots, the difference is caused by choice of emitter. Convoy gives you variety of choices... Another big plus for Convoy.
I recently got an M21F and also S21F - I like the side switches and how they're quite firm, unlikely to activate in your pocket. And of course... Finally USB C charging!
hahaha agree ..nitecore has many great flashlight with amazing flood and spotlight .. but the issue is.. every flashlight with 1800 lumen and above .. its really getting hot ..even it can melt your pocket if you accidentally turned on .. on turbo😂 😮💨😮💨 @@DarrenYeoYT
Convoy is way better! I just ordered m21b with xhp70.3 and 6v 8a driver. Will put out anout 40% more lumens than the nitecore. Only cost $75nzd(+ another $14 for the tactical tail switch) vs $200nzd for the nitecore
Amazing. It'd run cooler too I bet. You got the tactical tail for the M21B? I thought they were only for some other models but I suppose it'd work. Could set the mode to 100% grouping.
@@DarrenYeoYTyes tactical tail will work on m21b. You can also remove the switch from it and put in the tail cap of other models to make them "tactical"
@@DarrenYeoYTthink it will only work on the 21700 lights. Wurkkos fc12 tail cap works 18650 convoys apparently..... haven't tried it yet but just messaged wurkkos and they sold me one for $10 shipped. I'm putting it on the s3 xhp50.3 with 6v 4a driver 2300 lumens and smaller than s2
I like the P23i and would love to see it compared to the Acebeam Defender P17 with a XHP70.3 Hi emitter. Just an idea if you happen to come across a P17 to try out. Thanks again for the review!
Hi Gus, I'll keep that in mind! Acebeam/Weltool are two brands I'm curious about as they seem to use more TIR optics to achieve similar throw figures that you get from reflector lights of the same size, like the Convoy M21B. I'm not a fan of TIR lights with large bezels, can't carry them around comfortably unless you want to walk around with a holster lol. The XHP70.3 seems comparable to the SFT70.
@@polymathematics5837 the bottleneck on the overall throw is the reflector/TIR diameter and the size of the LED phosphor surface, relative to lumen output. It's why the NM1 throws the best. In terms of lens/reflector tech, seems standard for many years.. unchanged. But LEDs just get more efficient.
You can't compare two different Lights That are clearly Not in the same category?? That's like comparing a Sports Car To a 4x4 Truck One is a Dedicated Thrower The other is a Combination Beam!?? They both have their uses If you wanna compare something You need to compare Apples to Apples Obviously a Dedicated Thrower Will reach out alot futher than A combination Beam Because it's supposes to One is not better than the other Different categories A better comparison would be The Convoy against an LEP Light Or comparing the SST70 to an SST40 Emitter Either you compare Throwers to Throwers Or Flood/Combo to Flood/Combo Then you get a more accurate comparison
Thanks Thoros, I'll keep that in mind. Was comparing these as they were roughly the same size and more of the throwy end in my opinion. But you are right, the P23i is more of a combination flood + throw light.
They really do a great job with beam profile, I'm very impressed with this p23i. I don't own any nitecores yet but I know I'll have to get one at some point, they are just too nice not to have at least one in the collection.
@@lumntoob999 At the moment I only have 4 flashlights, 2 of them are Nitecores, MT2C (modded with cleanest tint Nichia 219C 4000K I've seen) have had this light for 11 years and it's still used daily, it used to be my work light as a VW tech; the second Nitecore is an EC25 Cobra (10 years old), planing to mod it with a nice new XML v2 4000K, they're both the lights I go to when I need to actually get work done. Efficient, dependent and reliable.
@@DarrenYeoYT yeah it does. ive always like flood beam but wanted something with more throw than the ec23 ive been using. i also hated the side button on the ec23. i would still prefer flood for close work like i mostly do, but i think i would hate the p23i if it didnt have the mixed beam.
Thank you for your suggestion Gonza, I will try to slow things down a bit next time. For some reason, it feels like forever when I do them at the time. Also get people coming up to me and asking what I'm doing.
For me, I like everything needed for the light from the start. I'll pay more for it. The Convoy is very nice though. About the throw, I'm confused. The 23i has a spec of 55 kcd. I measured about the same on my 23i. The Convoy has a spec of 40 kcd and a review I read said it tested it 42 kcd. So how the Convoy has more throw is a mystery to me.
Hi there, I measured 132500 cd for the Convoy M21B with CULPM1.TG (728m) It depends on the emitter being used. But it definately throws futher than the 23i. CULPM1.TG is a miniaturized LED made for throw.
@@2fast2block get the 6A version, the 8A runs too hot. The green CSLPM1.F1 throws the furtherest and is cheaper, but the white CULPM1.TG @ 6A is the best overall.
@@DarrenYeoYT I was trying to order through AliExpress and I have an account with them but they are not taking it for some reason. So they want a password to my email account that I don't trust them with for good reason. Anyway, other than that, I would have ordered it. Thanks anyway for your sage inputs.
In these times with manic consumerism i give hats off to Convoy for making the light repairable and able to dox yourself or customize or carry batteries, Nitecore seems wasteful and just wants your money, props to Hank and Simon i believe, much respect. Someday maybe theyll pass laws about non replaceable batteries and throw away batteries for the environment, with Nitecore your stuck with what you got and always on the ambilical cord, i plan to always carry a spare battery on my nite walks so i can use the light on higher modes without worry when looking through the thickets.
Thanks for your review, nitecore p 23 i and the nextorch TA30c max . What is your opinion about quality, durability and feeling between this two ? And which one has the better beam profile. Thanks
