Nixon in China (The Film) 

Personally, what I find most interesting in this film is the humanity of all concerned, the Chinese historical figures like Zhou Enlai, a man who fought a war and revolution, and Richard Nixon, a son of a relatively poor family who made it bigtime, meeting to get aquainted. It is on a presonal level that people can relate, not on an ideological one, and that is the bedrock on which peace can be established.

I wrote a letter to Nixon as a sixth grader in 1968. My father was a corporate attorney & somehow made sure the letter got to D.C. I received a letter back from Rose Mary Woods (I still have it) reflecting Nixon's gratitude & that I should thank my father for his efforts. In other words, I have a letter from the White House.

A Delightful Visit.

Exactly 50 years later and watching this old film and I have to admire the vision of Nixon. He was probably far "forward thinking" than a lot of politicians in his generation. I like what he said that the United States and China have differences but we don't need to be enemy at war and it will be good for the mankind if the two great nations can co-exist peacefully that way. I would hope we can have more leaders like Nixon who will promote mutual-understanding and forward thinking than politicians aiming for short-term political gains by touting hate and hatred.

I am from Beijing, I was about 7 years old then, I still remember his visit. I personnally saw his motorcade went through alone the Changan Street. And for the first time, I saw an American Flag flied over China. There was no live broadcasting in China of his speech for sure as it indicated in the Documentary. It was 7 years after before the two counties estabilished foreign relationships, that propably because the downfall of President Nixon. However, his visit, did opened the door for China to be known to the outside world, and as what Prs. Nixson said himself "A new day will begin for the whole world"!

Listening to the small talk is Incredible. This is why RU-vid is amazing.

What a great leader, far-sighted, and visionary; the World, China and the US are indebted to him. Yet not many would want to say. Thank you for showing this. The world will move forward, not backward. No matter how hostile and hateful, there will always be great leaders like Nixon, and Nixon 2, and 3, and more to open doors, smash walls and reach out to People, and unit people, no matter what ideals, values, or races they are. None could separate them as people are all from the same Father.

Probably the best part of his presidency, second only to the moon landing. If Watergate never happened, he probably would've been remembered as one of the better presidents.

i have learnt a lot about Premier Chou from books, however, i never got the feeling that he is a REAL person until i watched this video, oh my dear, everything is so vivid, he stands, walks, speaks, laughs just like any old man i can see in my daily life. Meanwhile, consider his unique revolution experience from young age to death, from Japan to Europe, from Guangzhou to Nanchang, from Jianggang Mountain to Yan'an, from Xibaipo to Beijing, the Long March, his serving in government, his suffering in the culture revolution, all these make him stand out from general old people. He has made history, and he himself is the history.

Think what you may about Richard Nixon, that man remains remembered with respect and affection in China to this day.

Nixon was a pretty crazy dude but opening up to China was probably one of the best things he should be remembered for.

A lot of people say the wisest foreign policy of USA is to engage China in a friendly way rather than a confrontational one.

From Chinese people's perspective, Nixon is one of the greatest presidents of the United States. He is a real politician who pursues communication between nations and peoples and seeks peace for the world. Premier Zhou Enlai is really a politician with great charisma. He has the greatest respect of each chinese. I hope there are more politicians like them today. No war and no hate.

This is really amazing to see. Nixon and his team at the apex of their competence and brilliance. Wow!

If Watergate never happened, he probably would've been remembered as one of the better presidents. Personally, I think he was an expert on foreign policy.

I love this film! I was just 10 years old at this time and remember this important trip but was not aware of the day to day details. This trip did change the world for the better and opened up China for me to visit several times. This trip was an amazing accomplishment.

I often heard Zhou sleeps little. Here around 35:00. He said he slept for an hour.

I as well wrote Mr. Nixon. I wrote 2 letters, one in May & the other in November 1977. My paternal grandfather (Papa) knew him because of his business dealings. Papa owned the largest Toy Model Kit, Slot Car Racing & Train Set manufacturing company in the World, Aurora Plastics Corp. When our dog died in May 1977, we had Tony (Our Dog) buried across the street from Mr. Nixon's dog Checkers in Bide-A-Wee Pet Cemetery on Long Island, New York. We actually have 5 dogs and a Cat buried there. I wrote him thanking him for suggesting the cemetery to us and for the card of condolence he sent. I got a very nice reply from him. In November of 1977 I wrote him again to thank him for the card & fruit basket he sent when my grandmother died on 28 October 1977. Again, I received a very nice reply from Mr. Nixon himself. He apologized for not attending the wake or funeral because he didn't want a lot of security problems for us, the grieving family. I know my grandfather liked him and I actually found him to be a nice man, when he came to see my grandfather when Papa was dying and he attended the burial service for Papa, not the wake. I wish Watergate never happened and am sorry about what he did caused so much grief on the American people, but again, he was a nice person as an acquaintance and he did many many good things for the United States and the stain of Watergate ruined the good he did. I still have the letters and signed photograph he sent. His wife was a very sweet lady as well. Respectfully, Dr. G. Giammarino, III

Nixon's eloquence, in general, but particularly at The Great Wall, is truly beautiful. Sad also, knowing this manner of speech has all but disappeared and is unlikely to return.

34:55 Nixon: "Did you get a little rest today?" Zhou Enlai immediately replied in English: "a little, one hour". To date this was the only footage I've seen of Zhou speaking English. Not surprised at his ability to understand English, just no other footage has been found.

A superb record of history. When you realize that no document as clear and transparent would exist for any of the years 2000+ presidencies. Back when the world was simpler and clearer. Without high tech pollution, without media-interfero-litics.

This video needs more recommendation. A reminder to the people that hostilities between these two countries was not always the case. If a joint cooperation was possible back then, it sure is now as well.

Nixon was a great leader for America. Faults and all he was a diplomat and very smart man. He understood that you can't ignore or isolate a nation like China.

A really memorable and significant documentary of Nixon's visit in China. I do hope not only currently, but also in the further future, China and USA shall have differences, but always avoid confrontations, and never become enemies of war. I still hope the Wall of ideologies, philosophies, races and politics will be finally taken off one day.

I'm extremely impressed with the translator on the Chinese side. China had been a closed sociaty and had experienced cultural revolution. Lots of good people, educated people had been put in jails. I'm impressed they were still able find a skillful translator. She has zero Chinese accent. She sounds just like an American. I don't supposed she has studied in the US which makes it more impressive.

This is fascinating footage and it leaves me with a question: was Nixon always talking off the cuff? I didn’t see a teleprompter or a podium or a piece of paper in his hand. It’s incredible if he was just this good at public speaking.

RIP Ji Chaozhu 1929-2020 Chairman Mao's longtime right hand interpreter also interpreter for 1st premier Zhou Enlai & later on for Deng Xiaoping. He's in most footages on youtube w chairman mao he's right there w Zhou enlai behind him as zhou & nixon first shake hands
