David Hume of RGH discusses some of the basics of elevating or lifting your home to FEMA requirements. The video was shot on 4 different house lifting locations in New Jersey. These homes were required to use new footings and foundations.

In many cases you can re-use existing footings and foundations.
OR
You may need to use standard or helical piles in high risk flood zones.

You know, I live in Louisiana where hurricanes live, so there are a lot of houses that’s like 3 houses higher and I’ve literally always wondered, ‘how the hell did they really just lifted up a whole house’, and finally I remembered to look it up, so thank you for this 😂 Curiosity cured, and I’ve definitely learned a lot!

This is cool! What an informative and well done video! My husband and I have a small home improvement contractor/handyman company here in NJ and it's cool to see what other contractors are up to in Jersey. Take care!

We have seen this done a number of times over the years. Always daydreamed about lifting a small house and adding a main floor addition under it. From a carpentry perspective it seems like it would be an easy and cost effective addition to the plan.

This was freaking amazing!! I always wondered how this was done. Here in Houston, everyone in Meyerland who was flooded during Harvey (and who had flooded two other times in the two years previous) is considering this. Very expensive but so worth it!

Something you should have mentioned, in a lot of situations the electric doesn’t need to be shut off to the house when lifted, as long as the lines are overhead. I’ve known people who have lived in their home while it was lifted and a new foundation was put in place.

Do you ever use hydro excavators to expose foundations etc

Nice job. Demolition would be approx $5k to $7k. Depending on the cost building a new home may be a better option.

How much did this lift cost? My house is around the same size. I know construction varies from place to place but just looking to ballpark.

Wonder how long it takes to complete the whole project? What if heavy rain won’t the rain water flood the foundation?

I want to hear the house creaking when they lift it! That would be so cool. The music is disconcerting.

I’m a civil engineer myself. I once designed for a house lift in Alabama. Another option is to install anchor j bolts into the foundation stem wall and the pressure treated sill plate with the j bolts embedded a minimum of 6”. The diameter of the j bolt is based on loads and shear checks and many other things but 1/2” día are typical. I didn’t see any j anchor bolts embedded into the stem wall but I assume they had them. The sill is predrilled and layer on top of j bolts and bolted down. The floor joist are then connected to the foundation sill with a Simpson connector or nails in accordance to the IRC code. The subfloor sheathing is then connected to the floor joist and pressure treated bottom plate for the outside walls. What he didn’t show you all in this video is how he connected the existing floor joist to the new sill that he placed on top of the new blocked stem wall. Especially with the subfloor and bottom plate already connected the original home
