Hi Harry. The way I see this merino deal is I would wait till it's done to know what fee we had to pay. Because at some point it was said the deal has been agreed it's just the structure of the fee and at the time it was for the 30 to 35 or even less so why then now it raises up to 40 doesn't make sense. So would wait foe the deal to be done. And we can't compare the Eddie to Merino one Eddie has atleast 2 or years on his contract and is just 25 I believe. Merino 28 last year of contract surly they can't be comparing the two of them that would be a very bad idea.
Harry.. the point that Real Sociedad is digging their heels in is exactly why we should dig our heels in our deals ! You cant have it both ways.. always buy at the cheapest and sell at the highest.. doesn't always turn out like that. In this case, for me at least, the club is vindicated in not settling at a lower fee because of the fact that as a top PL club we almost always have to overpay a little bit in the European market. So it's important that when we sell to the European market that we're doing so from a strong postion. This might not always be the case as we've catered often in the past to player's wishes and european club finances but in the case of Eddie, I rate him and I've always believed we're in a strong postion cause of what he has done on the pitch and his profile.
I hope this Merino deal will not flop. But IF unfortunately it does, I want to see Zinchenko used outright in midfield but not as LB. Certainly I don't want to see both Jorghino+Zinchenko played together; the 2 together had cost us bad losses! Nor do I want to see Harvertz pulled back from his striker position. I worry because Arteta has a bad habit of making crazy stubborn decisions.....
On Merino everyone should chill, Sociedad have to sell him now or risk losing him for nothing next season, we might even get him for a fraction in January.

Harry, Re Merino… Isn’t the reality as we’ve learnt from the Rice and Havertz deals for example, is that value is a factor of what the player means to us and how he improves our game…? Let’s wait and see how he impacts our game and then decide whether he was good value. In pure market terms, a player’s value is a factor of what clubs are prepared to pay for him. Subsequent to that his fit in the team will confirm either way whether monies paid was worth it
I remember the Xabi Alonso deal well, we agreed 16.5M but Liverpool wanted an extra 1.5M to pay his agent to bring it to 18M in total but Wenger refused to pay for the agent as he disapproved of them, this was the same reason the N'Golo Kante deal with Leicester fell through and we got Xhaka instead, at the time it was of course unknown how missing these players would impact us and it was part of the reason even today I cannot forgive Wenger for the catastrophic mess he left our club in.
This time that we're again so squeezed for time, was foreboded by the contract extension with Jorghino! Arteta (unwisely) thinks he already has a "good" Plan B on hand.........
After what Arteta and Edu have done, if they think he's worth the money they are paying then I'm happy with it, he might not be worth that amount for another team but the way he plays, what he might do for us etc might be worth every penny in our system and what he unlocks for others e.g. might result in adding more value on others
All of these issues are a byproduct of how Arsenal are run. Always looking for the cheap option, for ways to get a lower price, always shopping fromnthe sales secrion - penny pinching.. the favt the price is now 40m is because of Arsenal's often used strategy of waiting till the end of the window to force the hand of clubs into a last minute cheaper deal, has now backfired...theyve actually used Arsenal's own strategy against them because they know Arsenal dont have time to go after another target and they know thats a position they much strengthen...Arsenal need to appoint an elite team for player sales and buys, Edu not a wise option for me. Specifically, for these owners who have little to no interest in spending money on this club. They need someone with experience to do much better than edu is.

The only way Merino can come in is Arsenal sell Eddie Nketiah for top money hence why we’re haggling over the extra few millions. The owners are no longer willing to financially back Arteta or the board and Arteta has not officially signed a new contract with Arsenal nor has it been announced so there’s no point them giving him too much more money to spend when he may no longer be here as part of his obligations to now win trophies in “phase 5”. So now the board and arteta all now have to do their jobs we will now see how good they really are with getting the best out of what they have
Arteta thinks that Merino will be his successor to Arsenal manager maybe after he learns how to manage the team and premier league. Maybe after 2 or 3 years?
