NLAWs big advantage is weight. If you're an infantryman on patrol every pound counts and a Javelin is nearly twice the weight of an NLAW. That said, if your are motorized infantry the Javelin's 2.5 mile range (5x that of NLAW) and much bigger warhead (nearly 10x the yield) is the way to go. In rural fighting having NLAW for patrols and Javelin for motorized assault teams is extremely effective. When it comes to urban warfare NLAW is the king of course.

@@KingdomRepublic umm... no, not free, paid, and it's compulsory conscript trainig for at least 7 months for every able bodied Finnish male citizen of 18-45yo that the defence budget allows them to afford. In Sweden, it used to be the same, then a conservative government put the conscript system on ice indefinitely in 2006 and turned the armed forces into an expeditionary force. In 2014, a social democrat govt reintroduced a reformed conscript system where every citizen is pre-evaluated at 17 for compulsory conscript training of those found able and suitable to start the year they turn 18 unless granted reprive due to studies or inescapable personal obligations. (Total numbers in each year batch is also limited by defense budget) What he refers to as volountary courses is probably part of volounteer national defence militia training, comparable to the US national guard, it's not open for the civilian general public at will.

people often get distracted talking about NLAW versus Javelin when discussing Ukraine which misses the point. They're not competition they're supplementary. There's a reason The British Military uses both. NLAW is amazing for anyone to eliminate a tank thats is in front of them and an immediate problem. They're cheap (in relation to Javelin) and are highly mobile. Infantrymen can quickly learn how to use the system and can still fulfil a normal rifleman role. The Javelin on the other hand can reach, see much further out and hit harder, ideally designed for a specialist AT team who want to clear a larger area in front of them from armoured threats. These systems work best when overlapped with each other, with Javelins providing anti-armour support over infantry from a dug out position behind them. Targeting the hardest threats while the NLAWs protect the infantry from any vehicles seeking to overwhelm them. They're both great systems although the NLAW really is the biggest force multiplier, specifically for a force like Ukraine, the MoD and Swedish Govt clearly did their homework while SAAB aced the task at hand.

@kainhall

@@felldin also bigger..... the CLU is huge, the tube itself is huge on the javelin . NLAW just looks much more compact and light sorta like a HMG vs a LMG
@philonetic321
@philonetic321 Год назад
@@kainhall Good analogy. Javelin is best within 2.5km, maximum of 4km shoulder fired or 4.75km from a vehicle, up to 5.5km against air targets. NLAW is best within 600m, maximum of 1km and has a direct attack mode which may be used against helicopters. The NLAW is completely disposable where only the tube on the Javelin is disposed and the launch unit is reused. NLAW weighs 12.5kg, Javelin weighs 22.3kg. The NLAW has 600mm of armor penetration, the Javelin has 800mm of armor penetration, both have top-attack modes. The Javelin utilizes a dual charge system to defeat explosive-reactive armor (ERA), contributing to the increased weight. Javelin has the ability to correct its flight path to an extreme degree. Russian tanks aren't equipping the tops of their tanks to defend against Javelin, they are doing it because of NLAW. NLAWs are responsible for up to 40% of Russian tank losses in Ukraine so far. If a tank has full ERA and some luck, it can survive an NLAW.
@whitegoose2017
@whitegoose2017 Год назад
@@philonetic321 Even a 'light rpg' can be effective against tanks. Target the tracks and if the tracks get loose then that tank is out of commission. I highly doubt any crew want to play pretend they're now a stationary turret. It's not the quality of the weapons it's how they are used.
@philonetic321
@philonetic321 Год назад
@@whitegoose2017 To a degree, perhaps. Though the NLAW is far more advanced than an RPG. I'll take quality any day. Javelin and NLAW are so far ahead of the RPG that it's not even a question. NLAW may be not the ultimate system as every design is a game of compromises, but together with Javelin and Stuhna/TOW2 they leave almost no area uncovered. Hopefully US will purchase some NLAWs in the future and will supply Javelins back to Sweden and UK to dissuade tanks ever coming close to infantry, no matter the range.
@benghazi4216
@benghazi4216 Год назад
Since the US bought so many AT4's I wouldn't be surprised if they do the same with NLAW. But worryingly the US military industrial complex is getting stronger and stronger, and thus we see less and less foreign systems in the US military. It seems every competition they hold now is just industrial espionage. I mean bringing in all the worlds artillery systems, including the Nora, for a competition for the US contract, then deciding to design their own domestic solution is quite laughably transparent. The domestic contender didn't exist, but won anyway. It's like a comedy on corruption.

However I'd say that nowadays I see more of the opposite, US opening more to designs from its allies, even if mostly for licensing only. Though I may be looking more at small arms. Even in case of competitions, there is a possibility of buying or at least licensing components of the system. P.S.: what SPG competition do you mean? I haven't heard about US replacing Paladin with equivalents of Pzb2000, Archer or Caesar yet.

@@TheXmabax US doesn't have a plane that competes with Gripen. F-16 is too old, they don't want to sell F-18 on terms people want and F-35 has different(even if similar at first glance) niche. Main competitors of Gripen are Rafale and Typhoon. And it seems like a lot of people choose Rafale. To be more precise, approach of many NATO members is to buy F-35 for its unique capability, but continue to use(or buy new ones) Rafale, Typhoon, Gripen or even F-16 as lower end multirole fighter with lower maintenance requirements(not even cost, just the time it takes to send components to US) and more familiarity. So majority of flight ours, routine patrols and training would be done NOT by F-35, those would be mostly intended for potential engagements or real escalation.

The unit cost of a Javelin is almost a quarter million dollars. The unit cost of an NLAW is roughly thirty to forty thousand dollars. Sure, there are some things that the NLAW just can't deal with. But which would you rather the company have? Two more Javelins? Or a dozen extra NLAWs? For two million bucks, you can have eight dead tanks, or you can blow up the entire mechanized compliment of an enemy battalion.

The NLAW answers a question airborne forces have had since their inception: "how do we keep AT weapons light but useful?" While previously weapons such as the M72 or RPG-18 were the only real practical LAT Weapons for airborne or paratroopers to carry, but had the shortcomings of short range and low armour penetration. Perfect for things such as APCs or Trucks, but if a tank engages then there's little much to do. The NLAW now gives effective guided AT at a low weight and cost, perfect for combat behind enemy lines. Truly the best AT system of our time.
@TheBauwssss
@TheBauwssss Год назад
The entire NLAW system weighs just 12.5kg? Dayùùùm dawg! That's so light, its unbelievable! The JAVELIN weighs 21kg, and that's probably just the launch tube itself (without the Command Launch Unit, or CLU) because unfortunately the search results didn't specify whether or not it was the full system or just the tube and missile.
@philonetic321
@philonetic321 Год назад
Javelin is best within 2.5km, maximum of 4km shoulder fired or 4.75km from a vehicle, up to 5.5km against air targets. NLAW is best within 600m, maximum of 1km and has a direct attack mode which may be used against helicopters. NLAW has 600mm armor penetration. Javelin utilizes an ERA defeating dual-charge system and has 800mm of armor penetration. It's not reasonable to compare them as they perform completely different roles. The NLAW is cheap and lightweight, giving the ground forces exactly what they need.
