I knew a simple soldier boy Who grinned at life in empty joy, Slept soundly through the lonesome dark, And whistled early with the lark. In winter trenches, cowed and glum With crumps and lice and lack of rum, He put a bullet through his brain. No one spoke of him again. You smug-faced crowds with kindling eye Who cheer when soldier lads march by, Sneak home and pray you’ll never know The hell where youth and laughter go.
It always amazed me how Pete could be so bombed then just switch into 'play' mode and play every chord and sing every word in the right place. It's extraordinary!
He was and remains sketchy on the geetar. He was gifted lyrically. Carlos held it together guitar wise. The real powerhouse were John and Gary. Gary is a exceptionally gifted session drummer. Toured with macy grey and I believe owns majority of libertines catalogue. Always expected to awaken to news of Peters passing. I found addiction 20 years prior and saw his career like he was my little brother. My body is fading and he's got 10years at best. Although he has access to therapy we commoners will wait 20 more years for. Stem cells can grow him a new heart or lungs. Aww heck. At least I lived and laughed more than most.
See, this is what people mean when they say music ain't the same anymore. Most rock today is so clean and processed. This is what rock is supposed to be. Raw and messy and heartfelt and man I love this band so much
well, i mean, i like this band, but if you say that "music" is not the same anymore cause is not messy and raw you are not thinking about other genres... if you have a jazz or a progressive rock band being messy is being shit... but libertines is a garage band, you can compare it with other alternative/garage bands, not compare with "music" in general.
I love Carl's little eye roll like, are we really doing this? And then he just leans in and goes along with the whole thing like, yeah, I guess we are!
I don’t think it’s an eye roll for that reason, might be because he got smoke in his eye. Why would he make that reaction to a poem they both prob wrote.
@@kjsbadfkjlasbdg Why? Because he was addicted to narcotics? Until you talk to drunks and junkies and hear where they have came from, you would know and understand that no body in their right mind would of chosen Heroin. He is genuine and authentic and speaks more volumes than most of the synthetic and stale shite on the Hitparade.
And here's kids in my English Lit class complaining about why we should learn WWI poetry. Maybe I'll show my students this and say: "Look, this is what you can become, boys, with a bit of poetry in you at the tip of your tongue."
@@markmcdowell2733 Pete did end up with Kate Moss when they were both at their height of fame. It wasn’t his money that attracted her, nor his looks; so yes do teach your boys the importance of poetry! And who knows where it could take them.
@@michaelibrahim2026😂 have you seen other Pete or Carl today? They burned out hard and fast. Mick and Keith didn’t for 50 fucking years they couldn’t even last 1 decade. They had one good album and the rest was absolute dog crap but because they can recite socialists poems about working class people who they know nothing about the media love them 😂 Pete couldn’t even play he is a prima Donna
You know you have a drug problem when...Keith Richards tells you to dial it down a notch in an interview, and The Osborns, Liam Gallagher, and Courtney Love all want to stage an intervention (!)
I had the whole NME awards recorded onto VHS which I foolishly threw away some years ago... their performance and clips were the best on the show... from the war poetry to the Chas & Dave dance... classic 2004 indie days!
I thought i left y Libertines hardfangirl phase behind, it always comeback... such an amazing band, I would never be able to express my feelings about them.
DRUGS have no place in the systems of such CLEVER and TALENTED people like these 2 guys. Pete and Carl have written some AMAZING songs that just blows the mind. My greatest wish is that they stay healthy and safe so that they can keep writing and delivering more fantastic music in their respective careers as artists and performers ❤️
Riley Berry You are ABSOLUTELY correct Riley (another beautiful name which I love ❤️) I’ve noticed the same thing and have never been able to fathom out how drugs helps them to be such GENIUSES but they DO, it works. I’ve known and seen many drug addicts who are lifeless, lethargic and can barely string a sentence together and then you get guys like these, it blows my mind. They write phenomenal lyrics and come up with the music and beats for every instrument they use to produce a song that is amazing. Sadly that’s not something everybody can do, but a lot of these artists who can, deserve all the success they achieve 👌🤗
@@JulieJulieTheRockChickhermiz You'll enjoy a lot of Peter's and The Libs latest performances so, Peter seems to have found love with Katja and has a bit of timber on him that at least his 6'4 frame can carry well. That boy (and what that band did) will live on in infamy forever. 'If you've lost your faith in love and music oh the end won't be long..' and I truly believe that's what kept Peter alive in the darkest of days, followed by the pretence of a hollow, artificially brightened night..faith..in both love and music. Hope you're doing well Julie, lots of new footage from their recent gigs in Coventry Cathedral on here if you need a quick pick me up! : )

Geewiz there so cool, avant-garde & of there time here... They are the essence of rock & roll... God bless the good ship Albion, we're all setting sale for Arcadia.🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧❤️👍👌✌️🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Carl has always been a pro, love him for that. Pete has sometimes been a fuckup (waited for him for 3 hours in Hultsfred 2006 in a cold summer night) and love him for that.
Nirvana were washed up; only Kurt's cliched suicide could maintain their status. Had they continued they would be headlining Butlins' Grunge Weekenders.
They were miles ahead of Nirvana in my opinion, most of all lyrically. Pete and Carl actually have something interesting to say and a much more pleasant way of saying it.
Don't look back into the sun Now you know that the time is come And they said that it would never come for you Oh my friend you haven't changed Looking rough and living strange And I know you've got a taste for it too They will never forgive you but they won't let you go, oh no She will never forgive you but she won't let you go, oh no Don't look back into the sun You cast your cards but you're on the run And all the lives said hurt, did you say And then they played that song at the death disco It started fast but it ends so slow And all the time it reminded me of you They will never forgive you but they won't let you go (let me go) She will never forgive you but she won't let you go, oh no They will never forgive you but they won't let you go (let me go) She will never forgive you but she won't let you go, oh no
