The lyric is “freaky fishy,” you can’t convince me otherwise, lyrics sheet be damned. They debuted with and continue to have nautical motifs, and songs are not uncommonly written one way but intentionally meant to be heard in another. I know “INCOMING” is Dem Jointz’ producer tag, but it functionally really served well as the very, very first thing we heard from their official debut announcement trailer, as a statement of arrival.

I think media literacy is not just looking at the surface level of what’s literally presented to you, but rather, examining it within a greater context. And in NMIXX’s case, I don’t think it’s a coincidence that these ships, whales, jellyfish, and frilly fish-fin-like gauzy costumes are always showing up “just cuz.” I’m not someone who cares about k-pop lore, but it’s undeniable that NMIXX are continuously building a pattern. You gonna tell me that shadow elongates in Twice’s “Moonlight Sunrise” video just to look like a clock hand to match the written lyric and not play on the thematic entendre of the song? That Britney Spears sang a song about talking about looking for someone named Amy? Famously, for “It’s Gonna Be Me,” Justin Timberlake questioned the producer’s request to sing “me” as “may” when the preceding words to rhyme with “final-ee” and “somebod-ee.” This was a stylistic choice, and while I don’t think there was a deeper meaning in “It’s Gonna Be Me,” it remains an example of intentional alternative interpretation from what is logical or “objectively true” in the page. Art is meant to be read into, analyzed, and interpreted. Even very commercial workmanlike songs can have some degree of motivation behind their creation. We can say “it’s not that deep, bro,” but regardless of the real depth behind authorial intent, art is rarely meant to be taken as strictly literal. Even if this a “death of the author”/“birth of the reader” misalignment of intent and interpretation situation, the “author” sure is continually seeding the “reader” with a lot of fishy-themed stuff over these past two years.
