You asked... Here it is! An in-depth look at the 4WD 24/7 camera car! This GU Patrol is an unsung hero, and the HARDEST worked 4WD in the whole fleet. This custom built camera rig hits EVERY track first, carting a bunch of blokes and a small fortune of camera gear.
BUT... it's time to hang up the old girl's boots! We're building the ULTIMATE camera car & we want your help. Tell us in the comments below what we should build! A ute? another wagon? Dual cab chop? Tell us every single mod YOU'D make to WIN some epic prizes!
Some of the simple & functional mods that make this car such an asset:
GVM upgrade
Engineered on 35s with a 3 inch lift
Goodyear Wrangler muddies
Rear locker
4.1 patrol diff gears
Aftermarket turbo with a high flow TD42 water pump
Alloy radiator (you know... TD42 stuff)
REDARC EGT & coolant temperature gauges
Custom drawer system for gear storage
60L myCOOLMAN fridge
THREE Lithium batteries & a 3000w inverter!
Clearview towing mirrors
More UHFs than your local parts store
Water tank
Roof rack

From the practical point , a wagon that can carry more than most " 1 ton Utes " is the Mercedes G-Wagon 300 professional . Payload 1,200 kg , 200kg on the roof , Front, Centre and Rear diffs , front and rear live axels . It got single 4 seats , take one out for extra space and weight, dual battery 24 volt system - These are factory specs . The Nissan GU Patrol with the standard GVM UPGRADE brings it normally to 550 kg payload . These numbers makes the vehicle look a little overloaded with all the gear + men , second spare etc. .Impressive that the vehicle makes it through all of this so well. Troop Carrier payload without GVM is 892kg.

I’ve had a little think and here’s what I reckon. A Ford F-250 dual cab with a tub. Probably go auto cos this thing is already gonna feel enough like driving a truck. It’s big enough for the crew to ride in comfortably. Get a 4 inch lift on there, it’s gonna need it. Might as well Raptor coat it cos it’s gonna catch some scrapes. An alloy canopy that’s sits above the tube with a floor in it. Underneath a bank of lithium batteries to the back(cab). The crew camping gear can slide in front of it. Above that there should be heaps of room for a fridge, food and all the filming gear. Stick a which on the front and a solar panel on top and well as a full ring of lights in all direction for awesome night filming.

Weight isn't really an issue. Camera car should be a hilux similar to kaito’s 3” lift on 35’s as you said to run the same wheel and tire combo as other cars in the convo, should put on a big canopy to carry all the gear I’m not a pro on the extra battery’s and camera equipment but the canopy should be able to be set up to perfection and overall easier to reach in times because it’s all accessible really easy, better turbo, diesel for better fuel consumption and auto because it’s easier for on tracks for better throttle control solid axle and and everything needed to lower the chances of breaking cvs, raptor coat over everything and maybe even a pressure washer hooked up so after going through big holes and whatever where you get mud and water in the cab you can just open everything up and use the pressure washer when needed

Chopped and extended y62 patrol with 3” lift and 35s. Twin locked, twin snorkels for more air intake and bar work all round. Chuck a turbo in it-it’ll have more than enough space for the boys and their toys and it’ll have an incredible amount of reliable power to get you where you need to be and then some. Plus plenty of space for extra petrol cause it’ll be chewing through that also ;) but it’s all apart of the fun..aye?

A chopped 200 series for some comfort for the camera crew. And ofcourse 750mm extended chasis for additional space for the camera gear. All other basic necessary mods like snorkel, slider bars, bull bar front and back and ofcourse a winch (probably a whinch at the rear end also would be an added bonus). My only concern would be if 200 series would be too big for some of the tighter tracks. In that case a dual cab 70 series with auto conversion, recaro seats and 750mm chasis extension.

I reckon the camera crew should go a Troopy, or a 105 FTE Auto, the Troopy will have the room for them, they're a solid rig, and easy to work on if bush mechanics are required. The 105 is like a lounge chair on wheels, comfortable, powerful, reliable, capable. Run it on a 3' lift on 35's, maybe even do a dual cab chop on it 🤷🏻‍♂️ that way you can have one side of the canopy dedicated too camera equipment and a quality MITS canopy will be fill dust and water proof as you guys have tested 👍🏻

Build the back out, do the same as the GU, make it a weapon. Run 33’s or 35’s. Cruisers are perfect so why not use it to its full potential. Plus a 105 will last well past the 2 years

I think it’s got to be a y62 Ute chop as there quiet a new endeavour something different but the same recipe which works quite well. Bit of a gvm upgrade and extension. Big touring canopy setup for the camera storage in the tub to keep thinks abit more organised and “safe” run the pelican hardigg up right protective drawers for cameras, drones and all other digital equipment twin lock it 35s bar work. Big off grid solar setup and keep the 12v system completely seperate from the cranking battery except for running an emergency parallel between the two banks to save fiddling with jumper leads if the crank battery runs into issues, fresh water. Harrop performance kit And I reacon yous are on a winner and I’d love to see the camera car featured in more episodes especially the new hypothetical y62 dual cab Ute.
