My response when people say they hate fruitcake is, "you haven't tried the right fruitcake." The RIGHT fruitcake is buttery, chewy, spicy.....delicious.

It does indeed make great wedding gifts as my copy in the wild I found has inscribed on inside of cover page “Dear Cynthi- I hope this book helps you with the basics of many wonderful meals-I know that you will supply the essential ingredient: Love. My grandmother made this when I was a child in 60-70's. She used sweetened condensed milk instead of evaporated milk and used red and green marachino cherries instead of the fruit cake mix. One of my favorite memories. She made them into log rolls. Christmas is only 5 days away but I think if I can find the ingredients, I'll be making it. Thanks for the wonderful memories. My grandmother passed in 1985 and I miss her so much.

This brought back memories of my mom's fruitcake...she would make it every October...the reason being it had to sit for 6 weeks in an apricot brandy soaked piece of cheesecloth. Every so often she would unwrap it and drench the cloth with more brandy and re wrap. She got the recipe from a gal that she worked with, she was from Sweden. The last one she made, mid 90's she said it would be her last one, the ingredients cost too much. This was the best cake we ever had. My husband fell in love with it...the cake was was so yummy and moist and you could really taste the brandy. YUM! I think it was in a bundt pan, also. Yours looks good....

My Grandma made the BEST fruitcake! She wrapped it in brandy-soaked cheesecloth and refrigerated it several weeks before we could enjoy it. It was very moist and was much more fruit and nuts than cake. It did not taste like brandy at all. Treasured family gifts memories.

I know this is two years later, but we make "Merry Christmas Cookies" using the fruit mix. Our mother made an "Orange Slice Cake"- with the orange candy that is shaped like an orange slice. It is sickeningly sweet, and probably a thousand calories per slice, but is so good, and such a sweet memory.

Where I live, a local outfit is renowned for an extraordinary fruitcake that is more of like a nutty protein bar situation. It is AWESOME, could eat it daily. My mom loved fruitcake, we gave her one yearly. Rest in peace, mom, ill eat the fruitcake for you from here :)

My mother-in-law, who would be 104 if she was alive, made a similar cake to this every Christmas. She always melted the marshmallows in the evaporated milk then poured it in the other stuff. I think you're right, you need a bit more liquid. Personally, I make a light fruit cake every year that has only white, red, and green candied fruit. I'm sure you have a recipe somewhere around your house for one! Oh yeah, you need some kind of booze in it, too.

My mom’s no bake fruit cake has you microwave your marshmallows with butter like making rice crispy treats and then mix in the graham cracker crumbles, fruit, nuts, and spices. No condensed milk or orange juice in her version.

Btw if you want marshmallows that will amaze you, try Wondermade in Orlando. They have handmade, small batch gourmet marshmallows that are unbelievable in all sorts of flavors like orange chocolate and gold champagne. Don't think I'd put them in the fruitcake, because I don't think they'd last long enough....but thought you might be interested.

Bramble or raspberry flummery, barley frumentry, and junkets of all flavours were still common when I was a child in the 60s/70s. Likewise, suet puddings of every description and milk puddings such as rice, sago tapioca and semolina. And don't get me started on trifles, fools, possets and mousses. Such a shame that they have largely disappeared.

Around my bunch, the big joke with a classic Christmas fruit cake was that you could be getting a re-gift from someone from the previous year(s), since- if it's actually prepared correctly with a couple days of booze baths- it's completely self-preserving. This one seems pretty... wacky??? I mean, not totally, but wacky adjacent. The ingredients sound pretty good though, so I imagine it would be alright! What was the era of this book? Was it like late 60's? That flat art is really lovely... kind of makes me think of old printed tea towels and opening sitcom credits. Congratulations on making something from the heaviest book yet!

Mmm, I love rich fruit cake, stuffed full of fruit, nuts and glace cherries, then fed regularly with port, rum or brandy in the months leading up to Christmas. Covered in marzipan and royal icing, bound with a ribbon and topped with kitsch decorations. Served with Wensleydale or farmhouse cheddar. What could be better?

My grandma always had it at Christmas and practically forced me to eat it....Haha. I just couldnt get past the citron and chewy rubbery candied fruit. It tasted like I was eating an old skittle..Hahaha. But honestly this recipe doesnt look half bad!!

This cookbook is so cool for the photos alone! I can see how fruitcake might not be your Christmas treat of choice. Being forced to eat anything is not fun, and the candied fruit & citrus peel might be a little bit of an unusual flavor for kids. Old Skittle 😂 I like this cake more and more the longer it sits in my fridge! Thanks for watching!

I've always been kind of lukewarm on fruitcake, but honestly haven't encountered it all that much. It isn't a tradition in my family. This one was really nice! Not very sweet though, not sure if it matches the sweetness level of a traditional fruitcake. I'm thinking another tablespoon or 2 of OJ could have helped with the dryness. Thank you for watching! ❤
