My two favorite players playing an awesome format? Hell yeah, please do more of these :D Though next time, I wish the two of you were in the sane voice call :)
Love NBL Modern. I think Depths normally works out the best deck as it has just so much game vs everything and isn't easy to hate out like most the other busted stuff. There are two ways to build it, you can go Lurrus or Oko.
@@ChannelFireball Honestly I think that's where Modern needed to be from the start. The format started with a banlist that had a bunch of stuff that didn't need to be there, which caused some cards to be stronger than they should have, which led to R&D banning themselves in circles. Bloodbraid Elf and Deathrite Shaman were banned to nerf Jund, which caused Splinter Twin to go unopposed. But Splinter Twin was too strong, so it got banned, and then Eldrazi had a field day. So they ban stuff out of Eldrazi. I doubt anything in these decks would have needed a ban if Dark Depths and Ponder are legal in the format from the get-go. Only a few cards need to actually be banned in Modern. Sensei's Divining Top is an obvious choice. Umezawa's Jitte may be another (since it makes aggro a lot worse). People don't even play Mental Misstep in every deck in NBLM.
Reid Duke against Luis Scott Vargas is insane. The clash of the titans of MTG history. Wow. I backed up this video on two different storage units cause in 2045 someone will ask for it and there are no guarantees RU-vid will be even a thing. This is insane, best video of the decade, minimum.
In 2045 Reid and Luis will be playing no banlist post-moderneer on their Applestation 12s in the final Megacity left run by Disnamazon, while the wasteland dwellers try to climb the walls to get a taste of clean air.
Urza’s Saga the best card in the UG deck, and arguably the best card in NBL. I don’t think this means it needs to be banned in regular modern tho. The reason it’s so good is it’s carried by the artifact lands and mopal, and it overpowers oko.
It would have been fun if you guys were in a discord call and just toggled mute when you wana talk about your hand and lines of play, but unmute when you wana say things to you opponent for some fun banter between the two of you
I'd love to see a version of this where you guys each pick 3 of your favorite standard decks and see who comes out on top. Would be cool to see things like Affinity vs Energy or U/G Madness vs Ramunap Red.
I feel like this format is actually pretty good, maybe it's a little unexplored and that's why it seems that way but there should be more events of it.
It does seem like it's unsolved. I still think No Banlist Modern should be seriously looked at by R&D. A lot of Modern's current banlist is a result of WotC banning themselves in circles. A lot of cards can come off. Chrome Mox is a good example. WotC is worried it would lead to to too many turn 1 or turn 2 kills, but I think it would more likely be used the same way it was in Extended circa 2004. Chrome Mox was used most often in aggro decks to help them keep up with combo. Playing two Goblin Lackeys on turn 1 or getting Psychatog going on turn 2 with Circular Logic as backup were much, much more common plays than something absurd like Storm using Mind's Desire.
I think there should be a format like this plus the non reserved list cards from Legacy, so you could also play Hymn, Sinkhole, Ancient Tomb etc. Would be a cool way to play broken things without the hurdle of buying Duals, City of Traitors etc for Legacy.
@@ChannelFireball what?!? I loved Hogaak /s Actually I hate that Hogaak got Bridge from Below unjustly banned and that WotC never fixed that mistake. FREE THE BRIDGE!!!
In the UG deck, would be better to play more crypts than spellbomb, but there’s already one crypt for saga to find. Could play more for artifact synergies, but depends how badly you want to hose gys.
Who would have predicted that best two magic players (by myriad, diverse, and disparate metrics) would also naturally have the perfectly winning straight-man/gag-man duo dispositions? They should honestly have a Judd Appetizer movie based on them.
@@sorin_markov it’s not easily removed, there’s like no removal in nbl (oko is the removal). From my testing it was pretty good. Treasure cruise is great. Weak to depths specifically tho.
@@sorin_markov yes, the depths deck played 3 copies of fatal push… in the sideboard. A card that also gets hit by mental misstep. The format is too full of proactive strategies that ignore removal that decks can’t afford to play them. You see no PEnding, no Solitude, no Unholy Heat. The most you see is, as you pointed out, fatal push in the sideboard of depths decks.
Glimpse of nature is a modern banned card, and the deck is competitive in legacy, skull clamp is probably the strongest card in the modern card pool. And the deck seems very good, do you know elves combo legacy? Or what were you thinking?
@@kailar9415 the deck is good in legacy because of gaea’s cradle, wirewood symbiote, and now allosaurus shepherd to play through chalice. You must not follow very closely, but many legacy elves decks don’t even play glimpse anymore. In NBL it gets hosed by chalice and is slower than other combo decks. I say this from my testing for the Kanister NBL tournament.
This deck is 1 Uro away from being the GU Uro control deck that controlled the format for a while. I think that was a little more Urza, but why not “KISS”. Keep it Simple Stupid! Blue/White/Red, Splinter Twin and white for Teferi. Actually that is too fair. A couple years ago I figured out how to build T1 storm in NBL modern. That is much much more fair. *if Reid is on Punishing Fire Jund… sigh. Also lifetime at events, I’m 3-0 vs Reid in the Jund mirror. He needs to step up. (Winning vs him with SB Bonfire in the Jund mirror…)
Something messed with the resolution of this vid? Looks bad on phone and on Pc, cant read the text of the cards. Tried different res's , I'm not sure at this point. Love the concept mind!
Serious question: Why is Modern the only format people are trying to play with no ban list? Personal feelings, NBL Modern is not a fun format to play or watch. Just play Legacy at that point instead.
@@ChannelFireball yeah, Japanese has their sounds separated into Consonant-vowel pairs, so you'd say it like "Bo"-"Se"-"I"-"Ju". In a natural way it comes out as boseyyju
