Another one of those bands whose name I've known forever but never listened to! The ridiculously eccentric, eclectic and unpredictable, Mr. Bungle!

I'll never tire of Mr. Bungle reaction videos. I'd pay money to go back 30+ years ago and hear them for the first time again.

@@BleedingEdgeProg if my calculations are correct I've seen Mike 22 times? 23? All with different projects, from FNM/Bungle to Fantomâs before their album dropped, to him with Rahzel from the Roots, Tomahawk, Lovage, Dead Cross...pick one out of a hat and have a go. He's an amazing specimen to take a deep dive on, believe me you. It's never ending.

Wall-to-wall explicit lyrics in “Girls of Porn” and “Squeeze Me Macaroni,” for sure. This is arguably the most accessible song on the album, which is kind of crazy now that I think about it, since it involves rhythmic barfing at some point.

First time hearing Mr. Bungle as well, although I was aware of them for a while now, definitely enjoyed what I heard here though! I'm a sucker for the quirkier side of rock/metal, and this track felt really coherent in its madness somehow. Definitely going to dive deeper into them eventually!

Unsurprisingly, Mike Patton has spoken of how Cardiacs were a big influence on Mr Bungle …and more recently he’s been especially vocal in championing Tim Smith as a composer. Great pick for a reaction. On a related subject, I’d love to hear your thoughts on Cardiacs Live album “Special Garage Concert” as I see you’ve been reacting to some of their early recordings. Those recordings were super raw and the band specifically recorded this live album to properly showcase these early recordings in their full glory.

I'll add that to my now very extensive list. Could be a while before I get to it, though. LOL It's just amazing how much all of these bands can be intertwined and influencing one another. I love it!

Highly recommend to check out the guitarist Trey spruances side project, secret chief 3. The singer for bungle, Mike Patton is infamous and he has a lot of side projects, Trey sometimes downplayed, but he wrote a lot of these songs and secret chiefs Is just amazing, very Middle Eastern influenced classical surf, film, soundtrack metal.

All of your Mr Bungle info at the start is completely wrong haha. The majority met in high school, the band started in like 85, first demo was 1986(?), no new members added after like 1989.

I can't claim to know. I pulled most, if not all, of what I mentioned from Wikipedia, but I didn't want to go too deep into a history lesson, so I know I left some stuff out and just generalized. Then again, wouldn't be the first time the info I pulled from Wikipedia was suspect.

@@BleedingEdgeProg Yeah that's fair enough really! You shouldn't be expected to do a world of research for each video! I can see the quote about getting kicked out of bands is attributed to the band themselves- they used always joke around in interviews and make shit up but without knowing the band you couldn't possibly know that. And i was wrong to say they hadn't added new members. When they reunited (after 18 years) to rerecord the trash metal demo they made when they were like 15 they recruite some of their trash metl heroes. But it's only half of the original Bungle members, and people largely seperate out the two eras: Bungle proper, and Raging Wrath Mr Bungle - so much so that I had completely disconnected the two versions in my head and incorrectly corrected you about something only long term fans might know/care about. My bad!

I think they’ve copped to the Oingo Boingo influence in the past but something else that’s very prevalent on this record is the influence of John Zorn. His Naked City record was pretty influential to them but he’s also producing and playing some sax on a few tracks on this record. At this time he was probably best known for his Ornette Coleman interpretations and his incorporating elements of Japanoise into avant-garde jazz composition. All three of the core members (Patton, Spruance, and Dunn) continue to work with Zorn (who’s up to like 500 albums at this point?) on various projects up to the current day.

500 albums! Holy crap! That's amazing! And now I have a name that sounds vaguely familiar (though most likely because of former Seahawks QB Jim Zorn) that I have to look up. Thanks!

Zorn's influence cannot be overstated. Likewise, his record label, Tzadik, is full of cool avant garde (jazz, modern classical, noise, ambient, klezmer) musicians who are phenomenal talents in their own regard.

Their first raw demo raging wrath of the Easter bunny is very thrash metal They released it in the 80s and they were still teenagers. They recently just re-recorded it with Lombardo on drums and dude from anthrax rhythm. But each subsequent demo introduced a little more ska until the first full album, where it was, basically just Circus metal. Their entire discography is worth checking out

None of Bungle's "songs" are representative of their sound. They're all different and unique. Which is what makes them interesting. You never quite know what they're going to do next. Or rather, what they're NOT going to do! It's true that the ska influences are all over this album, but so is pretty much everything else. And as a fellow prog guy, I can't help but point out the prog qualities of their music. Not in the classic sense, perhaps, but this IS progressive music with plenty of time signature changes and concepts and themes woven throughout. Not to mention the one ingredient that most people seem to miss with Bungle: their HUMOR!
@BleedingEdgeProg
@BleedingEdgeProg 3 месяца назад
I'm very cool with it not being in "the classic sense" in many ways, because I tend to think of "traditional" or "classic" prog as being almost contradictions, unless by classic one means from the 60's and 70's. Progressive music should continually evolve and explore new territory. If Mr. Bungle does that, and does it with a bit of musical prowess, then they meet the definition of "prog" for me! Thanks for watching!

5:29 All of their lyrics are based in Gnosticism. They are talking about "heavy topics" just going about it in a not serious way, and using metaphor and "esoteric" references.
@BleedingEdgeProg
@BleedingEdgeProg 4 месяца назад
Seriously? (no pun intended) Completely did not see that coming. With that framework in mind, I'll be very eager to see what their lyrics suggest from that reference point. Thanks for sharing and for watching!
@dpclerks09
@dpclerks09 4 месяца назад
@@BleedingEdgeProg Yes, seriously. Their Main composers (Trey Spruance, Trevor Dunn, and Mike Patton) are fairly well read when it comes to esotericism. Trey Spruance has another project called Secret Chiefs 3, which is more overt with the Gnostic references in all aspects of their aesthetic.
@dpclerks09
@dpclerks09 4 месяца назад
@@BleedingEdgeProg Yes, I am being sincere. This album, and this song in particular is using the metaphor of a Carnival to represent the "Carnival of Life" or the "Infinite Jest" that David Foster Wallace had his finger on the pulse of (Jest/Jester/Clown/Carnival). "A Carnival for the Human Race" "The clown that painted a smile on you, is now the one unmasking you Animated Scenes unwind, Dormant Figures come to Life Entangled in your own Web, a Twisted Tunnel Overhead A roller coaster ride into the rivers of your mind The currents merge, your feelings surge, your life's a pantomime Beauty is the spiral going round & round the beast Without the vampire effect the carnival is deceased"
@SpaceCattttt
@SpaceCattttt 3 месяца назад
Err...I'd bet my left testicle that they're all Atheists. IF any of their lyrics are Gnostic, it's meant as a joke.
