It is time for the newest instalment in that beloved cinematic automotive RU-vid experience where we film practical cars that can be bought for less than £1,000 in a manner befitting of their inexpensive value! This may go horribly wrong...
This time, we examine a 1991 Rover 216 SLi, and I get much, much too excited! Be prepared for an exhaustive list of engines, a failure to put the car in the correct ratio, some minor rust spots, surprisingly arty B Roll footage, lots of wood, sagging headlining and some very comfortable seats. Nothing untoward, then...
As an independent vehicle consultant, I take potential buyers through the whole car buying process from choosing a make and model to a vehicle handover and road tax. In addition to information on this service, I also have a selection of written and video reviews of cars that I have owned, hired, borrowed or have somehow come into my possession. Please use the Contact Me page on my website to get in touch, visit my Facebook page for latest updates and share this video if you like it! Thank you for watching.

You can see why I fell in love with that car! Glad to see she's in good hands, sir!

Oh indeed, Mr Miller! I can see why you loved using her on a daily basis. She is indeed being well looked after and very much appreciated.

I come from the Netherlands and I had to go to the UK, Salisbury plains. Went to stay with a Major in the army on barracks. I asked him to rent me a car for a week so that I could go and visit the countryside and Bath in the weekend en do some sightseeing in the evening (my wife was with me). I wanted an automatic as I dreaded driving on the left and shifting with my right hand. It was a Rover 216 SLi Automatic. I loved that car. I hated driving on the left. So many narrow escapes.... But.... since then I drive automatic myself. I loved it not to shift. This car convinced me! I was also convinced that for everybody's safety I would never, ever drive in the UK/Ireland again.

Thank you ever so much indeed for watching. Hope you enjoyed the video! I have driven in the Netherlands, and got used to being on the other side of the road, but did almost kill a cyclist in Eindhoven as I didn't realise cyclists get priority in certain situations. Whoops! Glad that the Rover 216 left a positive impression on you, though, there is a very enthusiastic fan base for the R8 shape of Rovers over here now. Those near misses must have been really scary.

Early 214’s had 94bhp, this dropped to 91 with a cat then rose to 103 with mpi, the 216 single cam had 114bhp, 111 with a cat and the twin cam had 128bhp or 122 with cat. Many years spent selling these things, the Honda engined and Peugeot diesel versions were outstanding cars in my opinion.

Thank you very much indeed! Yes, I do like a nice Honda engined R8, probably why I have owned two... I missed out on those details, sadly, probably because it's an awful lot to remember! Saw lots of lovely R8s over the weekend at the BMC and Leyland Show at the British Motor Museum, the video showing them (I made five in total) should be up soon ...

Good video thanks. I bought a 1995 220 SLi, it was in British racing green and had the power bulge in the bonnet! It was only 3 years old but could not stop it leaking oil. I always loved the SEi specially the later ones with colour coded bumpers.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 4 года назад
Thanks very much indeed! This is my seventh Rover and second R8, both have been 216 SLi automatics, although the first one was a late post-facelift like yours. I expect that there was plenty of power! The late 214 SEis are beautiful, aren't they? I reviewed a Tomcat with the T-Series engine last year on my channel belonging to Matt from furiousdriving. Absolutely loved it! My favourite R8 colour is British Racing Green, though.

Excellent work as ever Joseph, dare I say I think I prefer your No Budget Reviews to your Tweed Jacket Reviews, anyway it was good for me to learn a bit more about these Rovers as I have to admit I don't know too much about them. Maybe a Trilby hat would have been suitable attire for the review as you hinted that back in the day these cars were maybe favoured by more senior people.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 4 года назад
They were indeed popular with the older populace, but they also were beloved by all sorts of other people, including professionals and families. I must admit I do get more of a trilby hat sensation with this one, though. I hope that the information which I imparted was interesting for you, sir, there is quite a lot to take in!

I a J Reg, 216 Sli for 2 years (2001 to 2003), when I sold it, it had a little over 200,000 miles on the clock.

Very, very nice car there, sir! I look forward to seeing more of this car. As I've said before I do definitely prefer the pre-facelift models. Not sure which I prefer out of Matt's 740 and your 216. I don't think I've heard of many, if any criticisms from R8 owners. I think they're a very underrated vehicle. I think compared to cars of the time (Cavalier, Escort etc) this wasn't a bad shout at all. You're selling it to me!
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 4 года назад
Oh sir, you do realise that this is for sale after the challenge, don't you? We have been enjoying using her very much over the last couple of weeks. I think that I still prefer the later R8s, but I do understand the appeal of the earlier ones like this too. The post-facelift cars are definitely better equipped, though. The 740 and the R8 were aimed at very different market segments, so it is hard to compare them, but I suppose it's up to you to choose the best one.

I can’t remember if it was the 216 or 414 that parents had but it was one of the two. It was a facelift model with the grill and honestly it was amazing. We had it for many years and was bullet proof. Had a Honda engine and was just indestructible. We ended up scrapping it in the end which was a shame. At the time it seemed like a good idea but now I wish we didn’t as they are hard to come by
@lloydvehicleconsulting

The Honda engined 200s and 400s were all the 216 or 416, which had the 1.6 Honda D-Series unit. The facelift occurred in late 1993, although the front indicator shape was changed about a year before that. I actually have another one of these now (this video is very old), which is a year older, but a higher specification 216 GSI, complete with a beige leather interior. Thank you very much indeed for watching and commenting!

Thanks Brent! No problem at all, the car you are looking at would have the same engine and gearbox. Watch out for the infamous cam cover gasket leaks! I also have a review of a 1993 220 Coupe on my channel, which is owned by Matt Richardson from furiousdriving, so perhaps you would enjoy that one too?

Amanda Redman drove a gorgeous SEi in Dangerfield. They absolute best came Last, well my favourite anyway, though any R8 is special.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 3 года назад
The first R8 that I had was actually registered in October 1996, which was ridiculously late for a five door variant. I can only imagine that the lovely SEis were not the only variants in production right at the end...

Thanks Mr Walker! I have owned seven Rovers in the last ten years and one of them was another R8. I would say about 75% of the original owners of R8s would never be travelling quickly enough to experience bodyroll in any way shape or form sounded very civilised during your drive.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 3 года назад
Well sir, I have driven R8s fast enough to get bodyroll, I can assure you! It sounded civilised on camera, but in truth they can get a bit noisy on the motorway, for example.

Brilliant video! :-) I am curious however. I have a G reg Rover 214 SI and an M reg Rover 214 SEI, the G reg is on 153,000 miles and the M reg is on 124,000 miles. You mentioned something about the heater fan speed control. Both of my cars, they work on all speeds. You mentioned something about them not working sometimes, what is it that fails? I have heard they can fail, but I have been lucky obviously! :-)
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 4 года назад
Thanks very much indeed! It's probably either the blower motor or resistor which fails. As I mentioned previously, I have never had a problem of this nature with either of my R8s, but I did have that issue with a 1998 R3 that I owned in 2009. The heater and front structures in both are identical, I gather. By the way, I also have a review as part of the Tweed Jacket Reviews series on my channel of a 1998 Rover 620 GSI automatic if you would be interested in that...

Hello my friend , It would be nice if you could get your hands on a Honda Concerto see how they compare . I used to know of someone who had one 20 yrs ago now , green 5door with leather Auto. nice car , I know the floor went on it, they did have done about 10yrs ago where it is now I don't know.

Those are exceptionally rare! I don't even see many at shows. Very similar in engineering to the Honda engined ones of these (with the exception of the front suspension), and built on the same production line. Full leather interiors are very rare on an R8, but there are some around. Rust has killed a lot of these.

made the astra mk2 and escort mk4 look like dinosaurs in 1989, btw the labelled "coins" tray, is it just for coins or are you allowed to put a few boiled sweets or a pair of wireless earphones in there!!!
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 4 года назад
Thank you, absolutely, the contemporary Astra and Escort in 1989 certainly were not as good. Even the 1990 Mark 4 Escort was extremely disappointing compared to the R8. You can't use the coin tray for anything else, sir, it's against the law!

@trabali5168 4 года назад
@@lloydvehicleconsulting I think you mean the 1990 mk5! (terrible car). I must be guilty then in the 90s when i had one of these, and i used to put anything in the coin tray that fitted.......except coin as i was a bit broke!!
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 4 года назад
Ah yes, apologies, sir! I did mean the terrible Mk5, Ford got it ever, ever so wrong and compared with an R8, well, it was a bit embarrassing. The Mk5 facelift was an awful lot better. Looks as if you have been busted putting illegal objects in the coin tray and will face the consequences for doing so...
