Happy to help 😝 our van build we made so many mistakes. But we did learn from them. The first one is making sure we have a good plan to start from. Sketchup has changed our lives.

That’s the million dollar question! Luke said the Van conversion we did would take 12 weeks. It took 18 months!! So maybe if we say 18 months, it might be 12 weeks??? 😝

never had an issue with the break away. But hired a furniture trailer hooked that off an went on my merry way. First big bump (while entering the freeway) the trailer jumped off the tow ball, which was then captured in the crossed over chains. Next day it did it again. (The hitch was completed screwed - wasn't my connecting it up as the problem). Without the chains it would've been nasty. The breakaway isn't a fool-proof guaranteed solution. We have them too. Its like have a seat belt and air bags - dual safety measures.

It's a interesting position NZ has taken with regard to no chains. I've also wondered if the breakaway system would function if a van came off it's hitch but remained connected with it's chains. I suppose it would depend on how long the breakaway cable was compared to the chain length. People always say that you should cross your chains so that they act like a cradle to catch the drawbar should it come off but most people I see have them far too long for that to actually work so it negates the purpose of crossing them. Here in Aus breakaway systems are only required if the GVM of the van is over 2 tons otherwise it's chains only. Can I ask what the predicted weight savings could have been with the aluminium chassis?

The debate will rage on no doubt, like I said in the video ill just follow the rules in what ever country we are towing in and hopefully never have to worry about what happens! The weight saving was going to be about 30% but it was going to cost about 50% more so we went with the conventional steel

That's an awesome project guys, well done! How much did the chassis go if you don't mind me asking?

Thanks John! Cost about $17k for the chassis and tanks

I'm just curious, are your caravan interior designs/specs relevant for whoever makes the chassis? Or does only the box matter from their perspective and the expected overall weight? I'm no physics person but it seems the weight distribution plays a role there

Great question! The chassis design is very generic with where the wheels and drawbar is situated so there are some loose design rules to follow when it comes to weight distribution. The heavy stuff needs to be down low and over the wheels and lighter stuff up higher. Our upcoming electrical and plumbing episodes will cover this in more detail

Cool project, i have just built a 7.2m caravan on a triple axle trailer with acm panel. Got my solar all in and connected, diesel hot water and heating, kitchen started... is a big project. Keen to see how you fitout

Ooo exciting, how does yours look? Ours sounds pretty similar, we are also doing diesel hot water.

No chains is just stupid. Not from the van running off if there is a problem (brake controller) but from the damage they can occur to the van/draw bar if it hits the pavements. This is why you cross the chains btw.

Yep. We get the theory both ways. But it’s the law here in NZ and the chains get taken off by the people who check for vehicle fitness if they are on.
