I’ve purchased two bases and several bits from the Rhoten’s business and they offer wonderful quality products. Like any craft, it takes time and practice to perfect - but with their base, bits and videos they get you EXTREMELY advanced and productive very quickly! Can’t say enough great things about these guys - I wish I was part of their family!!

Their channel is criminally underrated, the OG sign makers of RU-vid. While I find CNC videos fascinating to watch, I have neither the space nor the moolah to spend on one that’s half way good. But… I do have a router! Also like the finished look of their pieces. You can tell a human made them, it doesn’t have that machined and sterile precision of CNC. They have a warmth that really stands out.

Matt - THANK YOU for hosting the Rhoten family. Aren’t they amazing, talented and wonderful folks? I love your charging board - the colors really make it stand out without going overboard - you picked the perfect amount to highlight! Would love to see you make one for that beautiful wife of yours! (Please give her an extra big hug just for me?) This was such a great project with endless possibilities and you’re so good at demonstrating an example and then allowing us, your viewers, to say ‘hey, I could do that’ and here’s how I would customize it to fit my needs (or their customers!). Thank you Matt. This was a walk up to the plate and then hitting a grand slam. Nicely done!

Nice video. I would add that using a household iron can be used to transfer toner from a laserjet printer will also work. On epoxy insertion into tight areas, try using an oral syringe. The tapered and curved tip can be trimmed to change the orifice size and gives you better access to tight areas. Hope this helps. Steve

That turned out beautiful and the fill you did Matt, was a great final touch. I’d like to make one. I can say, Eric and Ryan make it look easy 😅. I have the 5 bits and base plate for my Bosch router, Rapid Resizer, inkjet with freezer paper letter sized sheets, and laser engraver for templates and letters, and out of 3-4 signs, I have one ☝🏼 that was worthy of finishing. I was a welder by trade for many years (following lines) and for me it just isn’t something I’ve been able to just sit down and do. Takes practice.

This guys bases are great! As well as his videos. A couple years ago I fell off of a roof I was working on. Broke a bunch of bones and couldn’t work for quite a while. I spent a lot of time with a trim router with one of these bases learning this process. It was really challenging with all my injuries but it kept my mind busy and had something to look forward to during that time. My current view is that CNC takes the man out of craftsmanship. But I also see how a CNC for a straight up woodworker is necessary. Im a renovation carpenter, my preferred work is hand building built-in cabinets and shelving. If I did only built -ins I bet I’d loosen up on the idea of automation. I just love the being able to do things by hand. When I build a display and hand carve the business’s logo on it, they loose their minds that it’s not a CNC, it’s gratifying. Thanks for having these guys on, really kool of you to promote something fun like this.

I don't do woodworking, but I have built control panels for flight sims (plexiglas). Engraving the letters are very difficult using a Dremel (even if it's in the "drill press" attachment)...now that I know the name of the very pointy bit ("carving line router bit") and to use a clear, standalone base, it will help immensely!! Most people seem to use CNC engravers or comparable, which is way too rich for my blood, but this setup will be wonderful!! Thanks for putting this up!! ❤

If you didn't want the ink to smear, you could do the same except use a laser printer instead and heat to transfer. I used to use this method all of the time to make circuit boards and front panel labels. Works a treat. I've also seen places like Stewmac that make custom bases for dremels to do fine inlay work on guitar fretbaords. They could do something similar and maybe more controllable than even a trimming router.

Howdy Mr. 731... I'm once again amazed at how whatever it is I'm building, you seem to do a video that talks about it...I'm starting to think you came down to Texas and installed a spy camera in my shop 😉 I'm building a super cool Mailbox House that's kinda Ardeco Modern Architecture type of look. The address numbers I'm going to carve using Eric and Ryan's methods (I watch their channel too) and since my daughter joined the Texas Army National Guard (just completed Basic Training) I'm going to carve an Eagle as a center "medallion" between the 2 mailboxes. And then on the side of the "house" I'm gonna do the American flag and/or the Minuteman flag. It'll be my first time carving anything.

The learning curve is quickly brought down to a moderate-sized hill if you watch the free videos that the Rhoten’s have. Adding the base plate to the router makes ALL of the difference in the control, placement and movement of the router. The first time I used this method, was it perfect? Gosh no, but very acceptable. Just like anything else, the more you use the right tools for the job, the better your skills become (i.e. learning how to: ride a bike, use a miter saw, drive, cooking/baking, painting, etc). Best tip I can offer is to make a few practice projects on scrap wood. You will be amazed how quickly you can get up and running!

Why arent there small plunge routers for this?. Very awkward to try lower the router down with the bit spinning and try not to miss the line, also no way to instantly adjust your routing bit depth as you go. Need a way to plunge as you go with variable sensitivity. Larger routers get too heavy and cumbersome.
