Their geography makes their playthrough into an easy mode. It's almost unfair. Large population (due to size and immigration being attractive), fertile lands, long coasts, resources, distance from european conflicts and their country already started westernized. During the 20th century, the european dwarf states basically commited suicide in the form of the 2 World Wars, and the Soviet Union collapsed due to having an equally delusional ideology but being honest about it's authoritarianism instead of masquerading itself as a democracy. By having that minimalistic democratic system, the USA has the legitimacy of a democracy in the eyes of its own poorly educated people while also having a strong leader and a nice and stable oligarchical skeleton. It's not really about competence, you basically have to screw up on purpose to not become the most powerful nation with this geography and historical circumstances.
