The result in summer 2016, of using mulches to transform 3/4 acre (0.3ha), from weeds and grass to intensively cropped vegetables for market on 1/4 acre, using organic methods, no synthetic chemicals. Plus I show you the fruit trees, flowers, compost heaps, undercover spaces and dig/no dig trials.
In South West England, 51N temperate oceanic climate, "zone 8" but summers are 5 or 6.

I’d bet my last dollar this man hasn’t been angry or upset since before 1975. I envy his energy and garden! I am constantly getting flustered with my garden or something involving the garden (pest, droughts, late shippings of needed items). I would love to see a video of his “mistakes” or “trying” times if he has any at all.

I was on the verge of giving up my allotment due to having multiple sclerosis it being quite a heavy clay soil, and the prospect of digging it again was daunting. Then up popped a Charles Dowding video. I now can see a future in my gardening. Thankyou Charles

Summer 2018 and I am waiting to have a hip replacement done in September. My surgeon told me I wouldn't be able to garden this year (Due to the excessive pain I assume??) however, without being able to get out in my "Happy Place" there is no point to my life, so, I adjusted how I did things and grew a lot of my crops in shopping bags and large pots. I also have beds much like yours but am unable to get down to them so do most of my planting etc., with a long stick. Your videos have been such an inspiration to me and have helped me plan what I want to do for next year, God willing. I gave up using my rototiller several years ago and have been using the no dig and mulching method ever since. Obviously, if I was still doing things the old way I wouldn't be able to have a garden. I live in Ontario Canada so the climate is a bit different but with a bit of tweaking everything works much the same. Take care and keep safe. Sandie.

@CharlesDowding1nodig
@CharlesDowding1nodig 7 лет назад
Thanks and that is good to know. And food that is rich in bacteria, say from a little soil on your carrots, aids production of tryptophan which the brain converts to serotonin. Regular meals of home-grown veg, rich in fresh bacteria (!) are great for feeling good.

Found your channel about a year ago, and started immediately. My 5 small beds in small fenced suburban backyard are brimming with lush green goodness. Already enjoying 2nd round of salads, brassicas, and first ever pea shoots - glad to have them during pandemic quarantine still active on April 26. Can't wait for the tomatoes to ripen. Zone 8a Southeast USA. A young man cuts my grass and helped me carry in and place the bags of compost/soil over cardboard. (Small gate, cannot get vehicle through fence gate to back.) He helped also put down cardboard and pinestraw for the paths. He keeps asking questions and is frankly amazed that I didn't dig anything. He's engaged, and I believe ready to start his own no dig garden as he prepares for their new marriage. He already saw how simple it was firsthand and commented, "And if you ever move, there's nothing to tear down. Just spread it out and the buyer has a fertile back lawn if he doesn't garden." Thank you for all you taught me! Gives me much pleasure just to go out and observe. Here today rewatching this video - one of my favorites along with the propagation ones -- wow, over 2.6 million views. Congratulations!

Hi Charles, what a beautifully maintained garden. Highly inspirational to say the least. I'd just like to make a comment on "green" waste. The green waste sold by councils here in the Uk and produced from kerbside bin collections is very likely to contain grass clippings from lawns that have been treated with a Feed and Weed type product that contains Hormonal weed killer. I have heard of more than one occasion where sickly crops were directly attributed to the unwitting application of contaminated "green" waste. One was a farmers Wheat crop that had patches of stunted and yellow plants. The other was a Rose growing trial. In both cases, the plants just looked sickly and weren't doing very well. Hopefully you wont have anything like this to deal with, but I just wanted to share it with you. Keep up the good work.
@CharlesDowding1nodig
@CharlesDowding1nodig 7 лет назад
Thanks for this and yes, it's that horrible hormone aminopyralid, which just should not be allowed, but it is. Fortunately our local waste facility test for it by growing tomato seedlings in all their composts before selling. Tomato, potato and beans esp fava/field beans are the most susceptible and quick to show damage.I am making more and more of my won compost.
@irunamuk
@irunamuk 7 лет назад
Here Now I've even heard of this happening with manure purchased from horses that ate in pastures treated with "weed killer" and the manure killed the garden.

Doesn't surprise me the no-dig with plant/mushroom compost outperformed the strips with animal inputs. Beautiful garden Charles.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spent_mushroom_compost - "its formulation generally consists of a combination of wheat straw, dried blood, horse manure and ground chalk, composted together"
@Welcome-to-your-life
@Welcome-to-your-life 7 лет назад
There may or may not have been animal inputs in the organic matter that the mushrooms where grown in before it became "spent mushroom compost". Mushrooms are usually grown in a mixture of natural products, this can be many things including wheat or rye straw, hay, ground corn cobs, cottonseed hulls, canola meal, grape crushings from wineries, soybean meal, poultry manure, potash, gypsum, cocoa shells, peat moss, ammonium nitrate, lime, and other substances. Spent mushroom compost is usually pretty low in nutrients, I wouldn't waste my money no matter what was in it. There is no necessity for it just as there is no necessity for adding animal inputs to soil. Huge waste of time and money.

In trials we have done with plants in pots of different composts, the mushroom compost often starts slowly (growth hesitant) then plants pick up and, without any feeds, grow strong, healthy and to a good size. All composts have different qualities, I am fortunate to have choices, and am happy to use different ones sometimes.

Vegan Gardener

Sorry, but there is no such thing as a 'vegan gardener'. All terrestrial life depends on the 'soil food web' which is made up of many animals, as well as protozoa, bacteria, and fungi. No ecosystem anywhere on Earth developed without animals. We humans can choose to restore the natural relationships between the soil, plants, and larger animals and reap the bounty of surplus that the natural world provides, or we can take living ecosystems apart and isolate the living things from their community. Almost no ecosystem on Earth currently has the number of animals on it that it had 1,000 years ago. Or 500. Or even 150 years ago. This is one of the reasons, along with other human disruptions, that so many ecosystems are in decline The plants in these ecosystems need the animals as much as the animals need the plants. A study of acacia trees in Africa showed that they did not grow as well without the giraffes that eat them. Grasslands suffer badly without herds of grazing animals - and oxidize massive amounts of carbon into the atmosphere when the grazing and trampling they evolved with is absent, which brings the plant matter into contact with the soil so the soil food web can be fed, along with the benefits of manure, urine (a critical water source for plants in arid climates), innoculants from the mouths of grazers, and beneficial hoof action. Of course, this does not mean CAFOs! It is said that humans can't be carnivores because we don't have teeth like canines and felines - but we also don't have teeth like herbivores. Nearly every large herbivore has no upper incisors (front teeth), except the equines. And nearly all of them regurgitate (throw up) their food and chew it again before swallowing it again. Some, like rabbits, eat their 'night droppings' in order to digest the vegetation adequately to meet their nutritional needs. I personally don't care what other people choose, or choose not, to eat. Dietary choices don't make one person superior over another, any more than other choices of belief systems do. :) My teeth tear meat very well. And chew certain plant foods well, too. But we now avoid grains and most all starchy foods. To each their own!
