No distress call before helicopter crash that killed Kobe Bryant

Kobe Bryant was taking his 13-year-old daughter and her friends to a basketball tournament when the helicopter they were in crashed. They were flying in thick fog but received permission to fly. As Jonathan Vigliotti reports, there was no distress call.

They were flying for 20min without any issues and then they were told to circle for 12mins around Glendale because of 2 other helicopters around the area. Dont be an expert, they just had bad luck.

Of course there wasn’t a distress call it was a fast crash, the helicopter had no issues it was pilot error. The pilot should’ve been responsible enough to know he should’ve stayed grounded until IMC was cleared and he could fly VFR.

GhostCrisp86 The pilot knew it was IMC and foggy before the flight, the pilot should’ve canceled the flight and said no it was too dangerous. It’s the pilots duty to ensure the safety of his passengers, if that means canceling the flight then by all means.

The worst part about this crash is one of course all the people that were lost and two the fact they were only a couple minutes away from their landing. R.I.P Kobe, Furture WNBA superstars, a great baseball coach, a loving mother, the pilot, and so many more people that were inspiring the world. Heroes come and go but legends are forever. 💛💜

Its ultimately the pilots responsiblity to determine if it is safe to fly or not. This news cast oversimplified the situation. Helicopters are issued this type of clearance regularly when conditions are below what a fixed wing aircraft would require to be safe. If the pilot had remained clear of clouds everyone would have been ok. If he messed up and entered accidentally he should have called atc, declared an emergency and climbed to the areas published minimum descent altitude(to stay clear of terrain). The pilot is at fault entirely, but consider the position he was in, task saturated with talking with atc and picking through low clouds, with a sports legend, his daughter and team mates counting on him to get the job done, possibly at the expense of his job. I dont envy being put in that position to begin with, but the pilot has to say no, it isnt safe when the situation demands it, or this kind of thing happens. So sad.

The pilot was rated for Special VFR which meant he could fly in conditions of one mile visibility. No one directly gave him special permission. It was his decision to fly in those conditions and he did not need permission from anyone to do this. Should have been flying IFR in those conditions but was likely in too big of a hurry to wait for traffic control clearance.

@@chrise2621 The pilot had been flying since 2001 and was Kobe's personal pilot for many years. He was specially trained for flying in bad weather and had a clean record. If the pilot felt uncomfortable flying he wouldn't have lost his job. It is too soon to say it is the pilot's fault 100% until the investigation is done, but he was the best pilot Kobe could have flown with under those conditions. I don't mean to argue with you but it is important to consider the pilot's history.

Pilot was flying BLIND. The CHOPPER has a curtain partition for privacy. Passengers could not see his reactions. I'll bet when he saw the FOG he thought EASY, done this so many times, in and out the other side no problem. HE realized real quick that he just put everyone in a QUAGMIRE and the FOG was more vast/widespread then he expected. The Pilot became lost and disoriented.. All that climbing and descending was the pilot panicking trying to find his way out but yet remained CALM so not to alarm the passengers. The pilot didn't see the hilltop at all cuz he was flying at 176mph. Their demise was unsuspected and swift unfortunately.

They said that the pilot was in a holding pattern & circling for 15 minutes while waiting for other aircraft near Burbank. Perhaps the fog got thicker. The pilot thought he was ascending at a high rate of speed, when he was actually descending and slammed into the hillside . This accident was definitely avoidable

I saw that early report, but i now seriously doubt it. An aviation savvy sound engineer was interviewed and that wasnt mentioned at all. He states he heard the heli and it seemed too low, but couldnt see it from the ground. It seemed to hover in place or move forward slowly for some time before heading off at speed and impacting the hillside. Turbine engines are so incredibly reliable, and this was a twin engine design. Also when a helicopter has engine trouble the pilot can perform what is known as an autorotation, and land perfectly safely even with no power in many situations. No mayday was heard because the pilot never saw the mountain coming.

AnonyPersona engines stalling is typically a sign of pilot error. Making erratic maneuvers causes heli engines to stall.

If you know anything about the Calabasas area it’s ridiculously hilly. the operator even says you’re low the helicopter can easily go 150+ MPH the pilot was probably to low and hit a hill at fast speeds due to low visibility. The wreckage seems like that’s what happened

He was flying under Special VFR rules. ATC does not control him like they would IFR traffic and thus would not divert him anywhere. Under Special VFR rules the pilot is totally responsible for avoiding other traffic and terrain along the route he picks.

He did get handed off to van nuys..they tell him to maintaim 2000 to 2500 feet and he was around 1600, bad call on the pilot I am guessing the ceiling was lower than 2000

Updates today with ATC audio to pilot he was too low for flight following (too low to be seen on radar) - sounds like the pilot flew directly into a cloud of cumulo-granite.

Man Kobe dead just so randomly has to be on of the most saddest, awkward, just confused situations to ever happen. I watched almost every game he played on TV met him in Chicago once at Northriiverside mall. He’s my hero and I don’t care about celebrities or public figures at all but KOBE was far more than that he was just a strong human that touched the world with his love. I will never understand why him, his daughter and the others on that plane, but I will never question it he’s in a better place now and I just hope God stays with his wife, daughters and immediate family. Scott A he messed up some how. Fog is no joke. Scariest motorcycle ride I ever did was in the mountains at mid nite and ran into fog. Couldn’t see nothing but a 1,000,000 sparkles LoL.

@@AMADEUS145 he climbed to 2300 feet not 23000, but he did it very fast which can and will cause altitude sickness from ascending way too fast. The pressure difference will affect your body. They say the pilot radioed that he was going to fly above the clouds, then at 2300 feet his helicopter turned hard left and flew straight into the ground at 184mph. This tells me the pilot most likely had altitude sickness and either blacked out or got disoriented which is why he never sent out a distress call.

100% the pilot’s fault and negligence! At the moment he saw all that fog, he should had maintained the aircraft still on the air and slowly decent until touching ground somewhere! Forget about ATC instructions and react!

@Captain Danger Not really, no. The Pilot-in-Command has control of the aircraft and the flight at all times. No one else gets to make decisions like that. If they do, the pilot-in-command is still ultimately the only one responsible because no matter what, they are in control of the aircraft, and if they take suggestions from other people, its on them for choosing to do it.

if you look at the flight path, something made the pilot veer way off the route to the destination, possibly engine trouble, as one person said the engine was sputtering or similar

Mike1614b right.yes he said that but to me I think he was confused disoriented maybe. Two engines’ not both of them?! He probably couldn’t see in front of him. The fog was so thick people driving said they couldn’t see snd they called all aircrafts down that morning / helicopters

we heard the whole thing and, from both sides there was no distress they never said are you in any trouble, magic the call got disconnected kobes pilot could no longer respond but could only hear them. why did the pilot circle that area for a few mins why could't he just land the plain somewhere. this don't sound right.

He was unable to do so because of the heavy fog...also trying to remain calm...n get the instructions on what to do...was told to wait because other aircraft was in trading...i think he just went ahead n used his judgement n try to follow a clear path but got confused due to heavy fog and the copper desending fast...didnot know he was very close to the tarain...lost control

In reality ATC and the pilot could hear and talk to each other the whole time. We cannot hear the pilots audio near the end because it is provided by a third party service which is not associated with the FAA or NTSB. The helicopter was so low at that point that they could not get the pilot audio, but ATC could still hear the pilot and the pilot could hear ATC. The pilot was traveling up Hwy 101 at a spot where the terrain rises sharply. Essentially he was pushed up into the fog/clouds by the rising terrain and lost ground reference. He attempted a hard left to do a 180 back to cleaner air behind him, but turned right into the rising terrain on his left and crashed. It is an unfortunate, but not at all uncommon type of accident.

I'm confused even though the fog is thick and hard to see doesn't the copter have like where it tells you altitude how high you are? Even as a pilot shouldn't you be able to tell that you're low enough to crash in the mountains. Something seems odd here like how did the copter tear up into basically nothing pieces when the witness heard and said the copter was flying very slow. Very strange how it just disintegrated.
