Old mountaineers trick, slide your ice axe down your back between the shoulder straps so the shaft sticks out above your hip. Easy to access, easy to quickly stash when you need your hands for climbing.

Good tip om folding the Thermarest to make it fit better. I have the same sleeping pad, and will have to try that next time I go out 😊

You’re my favorite RU-vidr! Where’s the guy I hiked with with the white beard though? This guy in the video is a young whipper snapper! Hey great to see you make a video… great job! Really enjoyed my time with you guys. I hope all is well acclimating back into the everyday life. I hope you have enjoyed walking your dog! Cheers Marmalade

You're cracking me up again Mike. This was the first time I edited a video and published it. Definitely not up to the same standards as Davids's wife but it was a learning experience. Hope we see you in the ATL when you start the RV life! Your room is ready LOL.

Great gear video. To keep condensation off the footbox on my quilt, I slide my packliner over it.

You actually nudged me to a gear change. I just got an enlightened equipment quilt but the Revelation 850 down 0 degree. I was going to bring a traditional 15 degree mummy and throw in a liner in the Sierras. I will sleep in a light base layer of merino wool to keep the quilt cleanish. I went with a slightly bigger pack from ULA, the Ulta Catalyst to store the bear can. I don’t like cramming my stuff where it’s difficult and time consuming. For the tent I got a Xmid pro 1. Here is to 2024! Thanks for your thoughts on the sleep system.

THANKS for sharing how you store your mattress! That little roll has always been problematic for me. Duh, don’t roll it.

Thanks, No Filter! Really thorough reviews and you covered pretty much anything a backpacker would need to know. I followed you guys & Hazel on your PCT adventure which was such a pleasure -- y'all are such a class act!

Great points on the gear, good review. I have been hesitant about the idea of a quilt but can see some of the benefits. I have a 5 degree sleeping bag from Zpacks and my results with that bag from 2017 is just a disaster. I would fill up with air and any compression on the bad would pop the stitching on the seams of the internal baffles of the down, and systematically they rip and pull apart creating a giant balloon out of the bag. it’s a stitching or material flaw in the bag and Zpacks is act ugly like they have not seen the problem and want a photo, in any case they will not repair their cost. so I will be looking into a quilt next time. they other thing with a bag is you can’t roll over inside them well and I see your quilt offers more room when closed into a tube shape. Enjoyed your OCT trip, and thanks again for watch out for Hazel on her trip. I have not heard. are you planning a Continental Divide trail trip ? Good Luck going forward.

Hand sanitizer works great at removing pine sap from cars, so I imagine it would work on Dyneema/DCF.

I love my UGQ quilt. Mine has the open toe box too so that I can stick out my foot in warmer temps but cinch it up in cold weather. It also cinches around my head. I agree about adding baffles on the neck collar. I always sleep in a hoodie of some sort anyway so my head and neck stay warm when I needed and cool off when I don’t. I have a smart wool balaclava for cold weather. It really makes a difference in warmth even on a summer night in WA when the temps can really drop at night in the mountains

I have the same pack. The hip pockets cannot be beat. I also switched to a quilt (Cedar Ridge Outdoors) - absolutely more comfy than a bag. I use the Xtherm with it for extra warmth.

Thanks for the tips. I have the triplex because I sometimes hike with my wife or a friend but it’s light enough that I don’t mind hiking by myself with it. I’m 6’2” tall and I do find that my toe box does rub on the end so I am looking at the Altiplex so I have more room because it’s made for taller hikers. Props to you for getting the Hyperlite 3400. I have the 4400 because I backpack with scouts and we have group gear. I also carry a camp chair.

We haven't decided if we're going to do a planning video but a great place to start the research is: www.pcta.org/ . They have some good resources to start the process.

Really enjoyed following you guys this year👍🏻. Great reviews, thank you. Was particularly interested in your quilt review because I’m ordering an EE quilt shortly. I have the same tent. Great tent! You can also use hand sanitizer for the sap. I’ve switched from deet to non-deet bug spray to protect my gear that’s made of synthetic materials. Tried a couple of non-deet sprays and they both worked quite well for me in northern Ontario. Cheers 🍻🇨🇦

Hello No Filter! This video very helpful in regards to my 2024 through hike. I do have one question; as a hiker in my 60's, what are your thoughts on starting your hike in mid March? I'm thinking of starting in March to avoid snakes😳 and long water carries. Thank you!!! I enjoyed all your videos with Rumbles and Hazel!
@hikingwiththecodgers4086
@hikingwiththecodgers4086 11 месяцев назад
Glad you enjoyed the videos. Thanks for watching. As for starting mid March, it can work. We made it work but we definitely had to manage miles, weather and expectations. My biggest takeaway from both our long hikes is, take what the trail gives you, and don't try and enforce "your will" on it. Mother nature will have a huge say about what you can hike on any given day. 🤣
@suestasi2229
@suestasi2229 11 месяцев назад
Thank you for your thoughts! I have my mind set that I will hike each day, as its own hike. Flip flop is in my hiking vocabulary for sure! As a solo hiker, do you think I will run into many hikers in March? In my mind, I think older hikers start early in the season. Thanks again!!!

Thanks for the videos. Does your pack have system for quickly stowing treking poles when you need your hands?
@hikingwiththecodgers4086
@hikingwiththecodgers4086 11 месяцев назад
It does not have a quick stow system but I did experiment with gear ties on my shoulder straps and it worked ok. Good question!

Question about sleeping with your 0° bag. Do you think you would have been comfortable with a 10° bag? Do you sleep in wool base layers in addition to your bag usually? I am trying to decide whether to get a zero or a 10°, and I am probably wrestling with it way too much, but wanted to get your thoughts.

@hikingwiththecodgers4086
@hikingwiththecodgers4086 11 месяцев назад
We're going to do a wrap up video and ask for questions that might feed a Q&A video but had not planned on building a single video that blended stuff from the whole trip.

hello No Filter. I noticed you used a ground cover for the tent. What did you use? Z-Packs ground cover? Did you use it on PCT or did you find it was not necessary?
@josepcook5923
@josepcook5923 10 месяцев назад
I always use a ground cloth cause I like the extra protection but many hikers don’t. Just a personal choice. Mine was a zpack. In general I think all brands rip you off when it comes to ground cloths, but everyone needs to make a buck. 😂

Did that air pad ever spring a leak? If so, how often?
@josepcook5923
@josepcook5923 10 месяцев назад
I got a leak near the valve about 6 weeks in. I patched it but it wouldn’t hold so I sent it to thermarest for them to fix and bought a new one to use while it was out for repair. They sent me a new replacement in lieu of the repair. I gave the new one to my cousin.
