No Gi Rolling With My 140lbs White Belt (Keeping A Constant Flow)

In today’s video I show narrated roll with one of my White Belts during one of my no gi Brazilian Jiu-jitsu classes. I did this video in response to some messages I’ve received about doing a narrated roll and also about how I “take it easy” on some of my White Belts during rolling. This video will give you an example of how I like to roll with many of my less experienced training partners.
In the video you’ll see me exchanging movement with John. While I do roll really hard sometimes and give no space, I find that this type of rolling has a lot of benefits.
1. It allows me a chance to practice moves, techniques and ideas in live situations during BJJ training without the threat of being destroyed if I make a mistake.
2. It allows my partner with less experience to engage and try their own techniques out.
3. By focusing on constantly moving I improve my scrambling ability and even my cardio for rolling.
4. Another side benefit is that from a coaching stand point I get to feel what my students are up to and what could be useful to teach them in the future.
Over the years it’s valuable to learn how to shift your mindset and physical aggression into different gears. If you’ve watch my rolls in competition then you know I can “turn it on” when needed. But I don’t need to access that level of aggression everyday.
I hope that whether you’re new or more experienced that this video is useful to you and your training.
Thanks for watching!

I really appreciate that you made this video! I am a white belt with around 6 months of consistent experience and I’m currently deployed in Iraq. We have a small group that gets together for bjj training a few nights during the week. The amount of people that show greatly varies along with everyone’s experience level. The last training session I attended consisted of a very new white belt and myself. I am by no means in a position to give instruction however, I do feel that for my time on the mat I have a developed a decent game and feel confident in it. I put a lot of effort into learning and improving my Jiu-Jitsu. As the session went on we did some basic drills and began to roll. It was clear to me that he had very little live rolling experience, so I just tried to focus on my defense and positioning. I would try to coach him along in areas were I myself had issues in the past. It was hard because I felt like I didn’t have the right words to explain why certain things work but could demonstrate them. I think you brought up very good points on keeping the movement flowing and I now feel like I am better equipped for these situations. Thank you again this was very helpful.

Just started rolling, trying to figure out the flow roll , this video helped, i learned mostly submissions and some sweeps at gracie university, moved to marcelo cavalcanti and they always tell me slow slow slow, im naturally a speedy agile guy, and even when i feel like im slowing down everyone still says slower, to the point where i feel i can only give 0 percent restraint, my issue is always looking for the submission, this video helped me, forget submissions just keep moving

Thanks for the great video Chewy, I actually think I can do this both ways. I'm a big strong white belt (about 1 year in), so when I roll with a white belt who is, say, 140 pounds, I could give them space and work on floating from position to position instead of just smashing in side control or mount all the time, and when I'm rolling with some of the purple belts and black belts who can kill me, I can work on moving constantly and trying to scramble more.

Thanks for showing and explaining such a great example of Flow Rolling! I try to do this all the time at my gym, but a lot of the new guys and even some of the upper belts just want to smash face as soon as we start going, so it can be tough as a blue belt to get a white belt to open up to more movement without giving up dominant position. Often, I end up putting my partner in guard and gas him out enough to the point where I can start flow rolling and he doesn't have the energy anymore to try and smash through

When you said light you meant it! Light at our gym is seems to have more pressure. Nice though. The flow is interesting we usually start to submit in a position and instead of finishing loosen and keep going. Not a stop and go but If we take your roll here as example it's closer to a video buffering with the submit and keep going.

Hi @Chewjitsu . Awesome content, totally loving it & been a huge help when starting out. But I have a question as a white belt on how to engage in no-gi. I've been training in the Gi for a few months & at the point where I can start to make things happen when rolling but then I took my first no-gi class and got smashed! I totally expected that but what I didn't expect was how hard it is to actually engage my rolling buddy. Literally every leg/arm I tried to grip = immediate submission. guard pass attempt = immediate submission, try to pull guard...you guessed it = immediate submission! Do you have advice how best to approach the no-gi rolling for a noob? Thanks.
@StanleyPinchak
@StanleyPinchak 4 года назад
Keep going back. It will get better. Look for 2 on one arm drag opportunities, overhook and invisible collar in full guard. From there you have paths to the back, armbars and sweeps. Look at the Marcelo Garcia shoulder crunch Sumi Gaeshi sweep from butterfly guard. It can open up opportunities for triangles and omoplatas when your partner reacts / defends. Coach Tom at the Grappling Academy has some great videos on using the butterfly sweep to open up opportunities, including flowing right into the inside sankaku (411). Knee shield / half guard needs modification if you play the cross collar game there, but things are slippery so gaining the underhook or getting an arm drag are a bit easier. John Wayne / giggler and toe tuck sweeps are viable options here. Watch Chewie's video on the giggler sweep for options to transition to deep half or X-guard if those are stronger options for you. No gi is going to push the pace a bit more than your gi rolls. You really need to have your submissions dialed in tight or your partner may slip /explode out of a technique that works in the gi.

Hey Chewy, I am a white belt kid I have been training for about 7 months and wondering about something... There is a kid in my gym who is about 40 pounds bigger than me and at least 6 inches taller than me (he is also I white belt but he has been training for about a year) who I rolled with for the first time today. He was talking trash to me before the roll saying “I’m so strong a can do an Americana with one arm.” Then when I rolled with him and when he slammed me!!! I guillotined him right after that. He got up crying and said “The only reason you won is because I don’t want to hurt kids.” He said that after slamming me on the mat. Anyway Chewy I was just wondering about what you think I should do. Should I tell my coach, let it go, should I just beat him worse next time, or should I sick my yellow belt (soon to be orange belt) friend on him.
