A new report from the National Deaf Children's Society says that, ten years on from the introduction of hearing screening for new-born babies, the benefits are being undermined by lack of support for deaf children and their families. Three quarters of such children arrive in school lagging behind their peers in terms of development and, by their teens, they are almost twice as likely to fail to achieve five good GCSEs.
In the third report of our series on the challenges faced by disabled people in Britain, Jackie Long has been finding out how some families cope.

I wonder how many of these kids are really intelligent and don't get decent jobs because of the lack of support when they were kids? Imagine how much not helping them is costing the state in benefits that they probably wouldn't need if they were given more help when they were children.

I can empathise. I am severely deaf and visually impaired. My parents did not ever learn to sign for me. Cost and lack of support was the reasons. I was in mainsteam schools through out my education. Struggled so so very much. Wasn't ever given support until i was 16 in college. I know with full support i would have acheived so much. Now as a single mum to 3 children they're learning to sign. Its very important that all schools teach bsl as a standard to help everyone. Especially with masks and social distancing.. its made communicating impossible.

This is so frustrating to watch. Having campaigned with and worked for the deaf community 20 plus years ago to get improvements it seems to be full circle again in spite of all the research and recommendations. Government agencies must put resources into communication trainin and education and not just technology. Even this video is partly u. Subtitled so that deaf adults who, have a lot of experience and advice to,give cannot communicate with the parents. Well done for the scheme that is providing great tutors like my old deaf colleague Colette McMahon from the BDA seen here to help parents. But so much more needs to happen to safeguard these families, and their children's mental health .

why, with 15,000 children awaiting adoption is anyone having their own kids? adopt someone that you can meet and see they are normal, bringing children into the world with disabilities is bloody mean, they have no choice

Sam How dare you! For someone like me who is blind, and there are many of us no matter how hard you pretend we don't exist, how am I supposed to see ''the button on the right hand side''? So inconsiderate.

In the bottom right hand corner, if you hover over it, are 4 buttons, and to turn subtitles on it is the first button on the left.
