Just catching up here on surf videos as we head into late summer season here in the USA, so cool that two of my favorite LB channels met somewhere in the middle last year at HB. Thanks for bringing this to us from abroad, and enjoy your world travels!🌎

this looks a LOT like the gulf of Mexico in Florida. We have crap surf most days and you really do need to know how to make the most of it otherwise you will almost never surf. The waves are either small and vertical and break fast and hard or they are soft and mushy and it can be a challenge to generate enough speed and glide to even catch much less surf well. They also tend to be shifty and will often change directions right before the wave reaches you making it nearly impossible to line up for a wave. They sandbars change constantly and they dredge the beaches every couple of years to add sand and make it longer which essentially destroys the break.
@BenConsidine
@BenConsidine Месяц назад
Yeah definitely sounds tough!! In part why it’s so good if you’re able to start performing on the critical outside sections, but can be easier said than done haha , I hope the video is somewhat helpful!! 🙏🤙

Spot on and point #1 and #3 are something I learned the hard way during the last year. At a certain point I was discouraged so much I wasn't able to make long rides with sections constantly closing in front of me without me being able to achieve absolutely nothing aside from popping up. Watching other surfers surfing even shittier conditions made me rethink about what I was doing and eventually reconsider my expectations. What I realised is surfing is always a matter of compromises and negotiation with the wave: so if I went out to practice snaps or re-entries on choppy, mushy, on-shore condition well... good luck to me. Also I was expecting the wave to do its job, but when conditions are sub-par the surfer has to compensate for the lack of power. This means having a fast entry paddling into the wave, a quick popup and a good setup of the inside rail from the get go is crucial and it's the key factor that can make or break your ride. You will not have a lot of opportunities and where I surf when conditions are bad to the point you've maybe room for one manoeuvre either in the only section available or when the wave closes out. Another important aspect is wave selection: when conditions are average to good, you can get away with pretty much whatever wave you choose because the chances of getting something surfable outweighs the odds of getting a really bad one. But in poor to awful conditions, you want to be extremely nitpicky and I found out this improved my ability to read the ocean and understand how the wave will behave before it breaks. I'm far away from being perfect in any of the things I mentioned, in fact I'm a low intermediate, but at least I'm confident about the fact the 99% of the time it's not the wave: it's me. Cheers! 🤙

How do we take advantage of surfing a longboard in head + waves. It's murder getting out, but paddling speed helps! Getting in early also helps.
@BenConsidine
@BenConsidine 25 дней назад
Yeah it can definitely be a challenge! That’s where the advanced lineup navigating techniques come into play, being able to time the sets, duckdive/turtle roll effectively, understand the best spots to paddle all play a big part ontop of endurance for getting out the back. In terms of surfing those waves I love something a touch lighter and some hard rails at the tail go nicely to deal with the extra speed and drive through the faster moving water on the bigger waves!!!
@Itsdlu
@Itsdlu Месяц назад
any tips on popping up further back towards the tail? I usually pop up more towards the middle.
