JHS Made a high gain distortion pedal and NO! It's NOT A METAL ZONE! So what is it then? Get all the real info here: jhspedals.info Buy one at Sweetwater: sweetwater.sjv.io/rQ5V2Q The Guitar: sweetwater.sjv.io/KjMbYz
Ryan, out of all the guitar RU-vidrs I sub to, you are my favorite non-metal guy to watch because you're not afraid to demo metal stuff anyway. In fact, you will often run metal-oriented stuff in ways that most of us don't, and come up with some really unique tones in the process. My band Dirus plays psychedelic black metal, and with all the different pedals we used on our recent debut, there has to be at least one or two Ryan Burke tricks buried in there. Keep it up with the killer videos, keep it weird, and keep it different! INSPECTOR GADGET OOOO OOOOOOOOOOO
Ryan's probably my favourite demo guy because he like, plays the sort of stuff you'd play trying out a new pedal instead of dipping into a noodly reportoire and never leaving it(or Surfy in Ryan's case). He does a good job of actually showing off what the pedal sounds like and it feels like you're chilling with a cool buddy trying out new gear.
Ryan pulls out the guitar, pulls out the pedal, dials some random settings and instantly gets a fantastic sound. You've made this pedal sound awesome mate!
Ryan…thanks for the comprehensive demo! So many channels just seemed to hug at full gain. You really showed the flexibility of the pedal, which is always what I what from a drive. Plus, I am also running into clean Fendery tones, so 👍🎶🎸
Seems like its a versatile pedal, but still difficult to get bad sounds out of. Some people got it chugging, some got squishy stoner-sounds, some did bluesy/country lightgain-sounds, and you got epic shoegazer sounds. I might wait until someone tries to push it with an OD in front.... But sounds pretty killer thus far.
You are a better guitarist than I am and maybe a lot of your audience. It is inspirational to see you get out of your comfort zone and try things that you are not great at yet. For myself, that is one of the key things that keeps me coming back. Keep trying odd ball stuff. Even if it is metal. Metal appears more legit when you blush because it could be that you are sooooooooo angry about something your face is red.
Not just any vintage computer that’s an Osborn one, notable for being the first transportable PC and for putting themselves out of business by pre announcing the Osborn two before stocks or Osborne ones were sold out. My brother had one for work, weighed a ton. Great pedal, but I’m all multi effects units out ( gx700, ge200 and katana go) but I did just order an octave pedal a week ago! (you’re such a bad influence 🤪)
The tone you have at 13:30 with the delay sounds EXACTLY like the lead preset that I created on my little Digitech RP-80 multi-effect when I was younger! I specifically remember the amp model setting was S8 for a "British Stack" and I added analog delay. I also may have put some hall reverb on there. That pedal into a 100w fender frontman 212 sounded so powerful to me at 15...
You’re reminding me of my precious RP-50! Which I used to make grungy metal tones and clean delays until I pressed on of the switches clean through the plastic box and didn’t have the know-how at the ripe age of 16 to fix it.
Josh said the engineer worked on this pedal for eight years after Josh gave him a suggestion for a high gain pedal. Seems he really dialed it in quite well and it was time well-spent. Really nice demo; best one I've heard. I could watch metal guys demo it all day, but I'm not a metal player and this showed me a lot more of the versatility of this pedal. Shame it's $200, but pedals are getting expensive.
Hey Ryan, that pedal reminds me of an HM2 Boss pedal. Very gnarly and full of chuggy goodness. I watched a few demos of this pedal and it screams nothing but pure awesome tone. Thanks for the demo, get naked, get your chugs on Ryan, and keep it bluesy.
Not a MetalZone, but the sweepable mids are similar; I've heard that this one is based on the Ibanez SM-7 SmashBox which is a mix of 3 circuits; A Big Muff input stage, a Tube Screamer Overdrive stage, and an MXR Distortion Plus clipping stage, with the EQ stage coming after... However, JHS said that after working on the design for a long time, they scrapped it and "started over", so...
Although a bit surprising that the podcast isn't dropping today, it's kind of good to know that I can leave the house without fear of missing out on the premier. I have 70 cookies to take over to my dad.
I find it curious that the musicians who have the most guitars and equipment are the ones who use them the least and those who do not make the slightest effort to make their own music, which should be the main goal of anyone who learns to play a musical instrument.
Without watchiing the metal channels i usually do, Which Im burnt on because of one reason I am about to explain, will ALL SOUND THE SAME. Every YTer will use about the same exact plug ins and EQ settings and everyone single one of them will sound so good, it's insane because they are expert audio engineers at this point. Every guitar review on YT, the guitar sounds good (with in reason)
Metal zone sound doesn't sound like an plexi-style amp that is variac power staved. Jfets and Mosfets in a series can do the same thing for a pedal. This pedal reminds me of Cadine's 'Jaguar', which is a copy of Freidman BE-OD pedal.
Heavy...well, not heavy? It's lite... but neat-o-kino..ok, maybe not kino? But it's the mostest osomest..???ok,never mind! It is a cool pedal! 😅Thanks Ryan 🤘 😊
sick of these ompanies sending people free equiptment & gadgets & guitars FREE and I have to put out money I cant afford to get it .......... Seems to me the companies need to send equiptment to ME once ina while.
I’ve watched a couple of reviews of this pedal today and I just wasn’t feeling it. But I just watched your review and that thing smokes!! So much so I just bought it on Reverb. It’s kind of like Queens of the Stone Age and the Scorpions had a baby😂
Love that grippy saturated tone with the delay at around 14:45, also some incredibly cool jamming thereafter. Fun yes, but also great that you tracked it. I love your high gain playing here, sounds musical, and not shitty, wanky, bs flash. I have been pretty underwhelmed by some of the ODs and Fuzz demos I have watched lately...maybe just badly gain staged but often fizzy and harsh. This sounds pretty phenomenal, and I still focus more on time based and modulation pedals, but this with the boosting and pretty bloody nice bunch of tone control options kind of seems like it has ended my search for my OCD, EHX little green muff, and maybe my Walrus Audio Voyager replacements, (Voyager has been my always on clean gain after compression pedal but with very limited tonal options). I suspect this JHS Distortion beast will be having a lot of players drooling for something like this. Sounds like JHS snuck a genuine masterpiece under your door. Screw the tonex one. Order cancelled. I don't need an untweakable on the fly IR emulation of the real thing, I need one OD that I can dial in my own tones my own way. Great demo❤️ JHS hit a Grand Slam with this. It sounds absolutely amazing...
Ryan, Your video here is the first that I've watched for this pedal. Awesome job and it sounds AMAZING! : ) The St. V with the gold foils sound GLORIOUS! Thank you for the awesome review!
the great thing about this pedal is that even though everyone's gonna have one the mid sweep and general inter-activeness of it will mean we won't get a bunch of people sounding the same
Starting @ 17:48 Ryan summons Shai-Halud to fight the Saudakar...... Lisan Al-Gaib! I got some very doomy vibes from that segment. Somewhere in that there is is a doomy space rock song that could be a 10 minute instrumental track. I'd probably listen to it on repeat
Ryan you rip way harder than any other channel. Someone could fight me on this. but, I actually have as much fun watching you as I know you have playing Which is unbeatable
GREAT demo, hoss! A MILLION thanks for actually usin a CLEAN tone! I'm a dirt junky with 130+ pedals, and THIS could be my favorite drive sound so far! I'm known as The Budget King, but I just might HAVE to pay a NON-Budget price for this one!
Awesome video! I really want one of these, since I only have room for one distortion/overdrive and I love the sound and love the mid freq here, adds so much versatility to the EQ.
Gotta give Josh credit, look at the Bad Monkey, a great pedal not on anyone one other than real musicians radar, that use to cost 30 bucks used(i've owned more on and off than I can remember over the years, now they are not worth the price now lol), he hyped it up, brought the price to over a hundred bucks, and released his own 99 dollar version, the generic 80's white color scheme is pretty cool lol.
The best demo of this pedal! All do only max gain, and sound awesome in lower gain settings too. Amazing pedal! Thanks Ryan I hope it works well with my Dream 65!
Funny you said that. I have nothing but love & respect for JHS but when I heard that pedal, that's very much what it sounded like to me, a variation of the acidy as hell boss metal zone. I still have 2, from the 90's & they SUCK for metal distortion unless you like wooly acid....if so i recommend a Roland TB303 synth instead. They are more fun. ;)
I thought this pedal sounded mediocre until Ryan played it. From the JHS video to the metal youtubers demos, I was not "feeling" it. Now i think i totally get it (as much as you can from a RU-vid vid).😅
It just WANTS to sound like a metal zone! That's been the metal zone's problem all his life 😂 great review jhs sounds pretty good and great compared to the boss ❤
