No Mercy: How We're REMOVING INVASIVE SHRUBS - Ep. 033

Earlier in the year we talked about how we're mapping out and removing invasive species from our landscape, like multiflora rose and bush honeysuckle. Well, as we started to move through the landscape, we kept on seeing more and more of them and perfecting our technique at removing them. So over the course of months, we've wrecked havoc on the invaders and are only now getting a handle on them...BUT, there's still more to go... (Recommended to stay through to the end for a real treat).

I always find it interesting when someone is maintaining invasive species on their property because "the birds like them" or that the plant is covered "covered in bees, and helping bees is good!" It usually just takes some education as to why what they are supporting, although likely well intentioned, is not as beneficial as they might think.
@KerpooHater
@KerpooHater 3 года назад
i mean, even if they actually do help, there are probably more beneficial plants out there that are non-invasive even if not native anyways

Love it. Brings back so many memories of our small homestead when the kids were younger. We would clear brush, limbs and downed trees throughout the year and gather them into one large pile. Come mid January with 2' of snow we would light the pile and burn it all down to ash. It was a mid winter rite of passage as we stayed up into the wee hours sharing stories, cooking marshmallows.

I can’t tell you how much joy this brings me. I spent every weekend for 3 months during the pandemic removing these from my parents yard. They were MASSIVE and I ended up hooking a wench to their Durango to remove the larger root systems. Drilling the holes was our only resort for some of them and it has held up after 1 year, but get as much of the root up as possible because I noticed last time I was home there were new ones coming up from where I previously removed (and missed) roots. Good luck!
@FlockFingerLakes
@FlockFingerLakes 3 года назад
thanks so much for the good luck! We DO love seeing them pop up out of the ground. But not all of them pop out so easily unfortunately. Especially in heavier clay soil. Removing the clayish soil from the roots is a pain. And we've noticed some barberry today just popping up again where the roots weren't removed. And the honeysuckle that we couldn't remove even with the wench flushed out SO much. So we're with you!

The wench you used, was that your girlfriend, or an acquaintance, or what? The only time I tried hooking my wench to my truck, there was a lot of yelling and complaining and threats of violence against me. I haven't made that mistake again.

A really good strategy with multiflora is to cut it at the base in winter, then a very small amount of roundup on the regrowth from the base at spring will kill the whole plant. It's difficult to get all the roots otherwise. It's a bummer, but roundup is really the best way here.

This video is so therapeutic for me I feel like it’s the MeToo movement of the ecological world Storytime: My land is flooded with honeysuckle and multiflora rose (and clematis, hawthorn, and a few other invasives) But I spent last winter getting past my aversion to chainsaws JUST to get to the base of massive honeysuckles invading my land I’ve been hacking and thrashing and chipping and ripping I thought I was all alone- No one seemed to understand You are my people I’ve found my Flock!! (The music is the BEST!!!)

I love your comment. #metoo I want to be friends with you. I spend everyday roaming our property with my snips and either my chainsaw or my new, _awesome_ (I can't recommend it enough) Silkie PocketBoy and a dropper bottle full of slightly diluted glyphosate. I pull up honeysuckle (See how I didn't capitalize it? That's because I hate it and want to show it disrespect in anyway I can.) and multiflora rose. I'm tenacious but I'm losing hope over here. We have a 5 acre field that has an 8' wide multiflora "fence" around it's perimeter. What am I supposed to do with that?!? Husband + Brush hog ÷ Me + Glyphosate= a fighting chance. A couple months ago I was in a multiflora thicket where there was also oriental bittersweet. I spent 6 hours sawing, pulling, swinging and stump treating and when I finally stood up I saw that I had removed about a 10x4 area. *40 f*uck*ng square feet!!!* We have 45 acres, btw. SMH. I'll agree with you: these people are our people.

Our family recently bought a small place in N. Georgia. The neighboring property has been abandoned & is over-run with invasive Wisteria & English Ivy. We recovered about 30' of our property, saved some endangered trees & uncovered many nice native species. It's a never ending battle though, the Wisteria has popped up across the street!

I have received so much positivity from you all. Thank you. The honeysuckle is your friend. Nature had chosen her to grow on your land; I would embrace that pattern from all the plants that grow there. The honeysuckle will give you wind protection, heat protection, cold protection, and will provide habitat; there are probably a hundred more uses that I didn't mention. If you let nature grow "wild" , your zone 5 will protect you. I would not let myself be disturbed by the "invasive" species label. My design imperative is to allow nature to do her thing on 95% of the landscape. That leaves me 5% to be able to interact and learn the effectiveness of my decisions. If I make a mistake, I will be able to learn and not make things worse. The concept of landscape aesthetics blinds us to the function that nature provides in her infinite wisdom. The natural landscape is most beautiful when we allow her to grow without our intervention. I have faith that you will see this sooner than later. Love you all. Thank you for inspiring people about plants and their beauty.

Those honeysuckles are native to the area. Born and raised in the area. A country boy my whole life. There are some invasive species around, those that they are pulling out are not invasive. I agree with all your comments.
@umiluv
@umiluv 2 года назад
You REALLY need to read about invasive species and why it’s not okay to let invasive species take over. They don’t have any natural checks in the ecosystem in place. For ex, deer don’t eat invasive plants. They’ll eat all the native ones and then the invasives take over and choke out the natives. And many native bugs are species specific to plants (ex. monarchs ONLY lay their eggs on milkweeds). So you would lose lots of the native bugs which are a HUGE part of the ecosystem structure. Humans introduced invasive species into the ecosystem so we should also do our duty to remove them if they messed with the system.
@msears101

@@umiluv the honeysuckle they were removing are NOT invasive. I have lived here my whole life. They were removing native honey suckle. The invasive ones can only be differentiated by their flower.

I'm really curious to see if you manage to do this without using tordon. I've been told by state invasive species removal experts that pulling is bad because every piece of root will just sprout a new shrub. We cut these at the base and painted the fresh cuts with tordon and it kills the roots. I planted 100 native shrub seedlings in the same area we cut out about 5 gigantic honeysuckles. I'm really afraid you are going to end up with a lawn of thousands of tiny honeysuckles that will continually resprout like medusa. Unless that is the point and mowing repeatedly will eventually stop re-sprouting. I know herbicides aren't great but it removes this evil faster and allows re-planting native shrubs much sooner. To me it was worth the trade-off.

If left to it’s own devices wouldn’t the land eventually become forested and too shaded for honeysuckle and multiflora? Do they create mats of death like kudzu?
@FlockFingerLakes
@FlockFingerLakes 3 года назад
Yes, most everything here would turn to forest if it wasn't managed, but in areas where there is dense honeysuckle / multiflora rose / japanese knotweed - there is no recruitment of trees / native plants because the bushes cover too much of the ground. Honeysuckle in particular, is the first to leaf out and the last leaves to go, so that even becomes more problematic for anything else trying to take root.

@mwatson3302
@mwatson3302 3 года назад
@@FlockFingerLakes from what I’ve read, epson salt is a good salt to use, you drill a few holes into the stump or stumps, ideally 8inches deep if possible, pack it with dry epson salt, and then slowly add water while making sure you don’t go so fast that the salt comes out of the hole. This will prevent the roots from drawing in moisture because the salts will be sucking it all up. If it’s going to rain a bunch you might want to put a tarp over the holes you drilled.
@mwatson3302
@mwatson3302 3 года назад
You just want to moisten the salts, not dissolve them in water, and you’re supposed to do it again every 3 weeks until the stump gives up and rots. P.s. Apparently you can try the same method with rock salt if you’d prefer that
@Eirikgonzo
@Eirikgonzo 3 года назад
@@mwatson3302 @Flock Finger Lakes I can attest to epson salt/ MgSO₄ / Magnesium sulfate being the best way to kill tree stumps and hard to pull trees. Both roundup/other similars and gasoline take way to long to break down and hurt near by plants, while epson salt will break down and bring magnesium to your plants for a longer period after the roots have died. Just drill holes and fill with epson salt, takes about 5-7 months before it kills the plants, you can plug the holes with tape or wax or anything.

We needed to remove the honeysuckle and multiflora rose from the lawn and around the flower beds and the pond because they were choking out the other vegetation-both native and planted vegetation. As you probably could tell from the video, there are so many special plantings the pervious landowners had done, it would have been such a shame to see those get swallowed up by the invasive plants. Plus you may have seen from the fall and spring tours, that our plan for that lower area (~ 7 acres) where the nursery had been is to restore it to native meadow. Or as close to native meadow as possible. In order to give a meadow some semblance of success, you must prep the area, thus having to remove the honeysuckle and multiflora rose in order to get to a surface where you can cast seeds. When we got here in the fall, it was relatively barren (save for the honeysuckle and multiflora rose), but by the time spring came, more vegetation started to come in, so we have a window of opportunity to do the clearing before it gets way, way too weedy.
