NO MORE WEEDS! Repointing / Leveling / Cleaning An Old Patio

In this video I work on leveling, re-pointing and cleaning our old patio which had lots of issues for a complete makeover. The old mortar pointing between the slabs was loose and damaged which caused a constant weed problem which I wanted to resolve once and for all. I also needed to level a few of the slabs which had sunk in the ground over time, and for that I make a simple wooden jig which helped me to level the sub-base at the perfect height.

Glad you heard about the ingenious slab lifter. I’ve had a lot of success with a 3” deep compacted sand base. Screeded soil and then sand. Tiles laid with appropriate spacing. Dry mortar mix swept into spaces. Then wet it down and wait for the mortar to set. We have a clay soil. With that miserable narrow side yard it looks like you’ll be able to pull up the tiles easily.

For anybody thinking of using the modern resin stuff, read the instructions and data sheets. Inlaid a patio last year using a 4:1 mix under the slabs. Looked into some resin for the pointing and most stated it should only be used on a base of at least 6:1. Appearantly the resin is permeable so needs a slightly permeable base below (or what they said to me). In the end used the method in this video and it becomes quite enjoyable once yoy get going.

Thanks, I need to do this - fortunately I have zero mortar at the moment, just weeds and soil 😵 so most of the slabs actually need lifting to clear the roots out first - I did a portion last year but didn't do the mortar thinking I should do the rest and level them - so I need to do that again now 🤦‍♂
@C4sp3r123

My suggestions , angle grinder with a mortar rake attachment, like a drill bit but specific for getting out mortar and or a mortar disc for the angle grinder. You can buy a shroud for both the discs and the rake but visibility is reduced of where you are cutting but helps a lot with dust extraction. You can use boiling water to control weeds easily for future reference or a weed burner off Amazon etc is a cheap option. A brushed in mix then water can over it works well for repointing. If ever replacing think about installing aco drains around the perimeter of the house. Nice job on it all 👍

@@RagnBoneBrown I was just going to suggest the same mortar rake. They work well and are pretty cheap. You can also get a shroud for the angle grinders and hook up a vacuum hose. Search on RU-vid for mortar raking and you should see a few different methods. Normally used for repointing a wall or fetching a brick or two out where say the face has blown off due to frost. You can also get a mortar gun, much like a silicone gun but for mortar. They can take little bit of getting used to but when you have the hang of it and the right mix it is very quick.

I would have thought a bolster chisel & 2lb lump hammer follower by a hooked scraper would have made short work of the mortar and make bit of hard core under the new mortar mix!. Some brute force destroying the old mortar can be very therapeutic in relieving stresses !! good practice for the next 2 patio areas. you have room for trampoline, hot tub, paddling pool there ... and plenty of lawn for gazebo, tent. marquis for parties

@@RagnBoneBrown worth check the pipe under ground. I had exact same issue with slabs near a drain. Turned out when I dug down a little there was an old clay drain running to a soakaway. The clay drain had cracked, soil had worked its way in and clogged up the pipe, over time the rain water washed it away and more fell into the pipe, over time it created a void for the slabs to drop into and make them uneven. Worth checking if it happens again with the slabs.

Is it an UK thing to put mortar in between (and underneath)? Here we just burn the hell out of those weeds with a burner and/or some people using light chemicals. Even something like vinegar sometimes works. There are also chemicals that are more harsh, but maybe not a good idea with a cute cat walking around. After that's being done, you clean it up and all is good for quite a while. Underneath the tiles there is some anti-root cloth. Anyway, just interesting difference, looking great in the end! :)

You spoiled us with lots of dylan's shots today! the last part of the slabs, the worst ones on the other side, maybe you can replace them with something else? like a (reclaimed) wooden deck? that would be a cool project to watch

Cheers Pablo. With the price of timber at the moment I doubt we'll be doing a deck there, although I do have another area I'd like to build a deck on some day

@@RagnBoneBrown yeah, I added the reclaimed part after thinking about prices, but I guess you still need some new wood for such a thing right? We'll see in the future then
