+Sean M where is your research that Dr. McDougall's diet is illogical? Are you a doctor? Do you have any training in a science or medicine? What about all the Asian people who have always eaten a starch based diet low in fat and oil? I say you're the quack. And a troll.
@neorich59

Agreed, about the starched based diet bit..but is it also, not true that many Asian people have also eaten animal products in addition to their starched based diets? Which, would probably still make their traditional diets lower in fat and oil than the typical "Western Diet?" I'd also suggest that the addition of substantial quantities of sugar have had a profound impact on weight/health? Certainly, that was one of the major arguments touted by the founders of the Macrobiotic movement.

Traditional Asian diets use meats as condiments and special celebrations. The primary diet is starch based - rice and veggies

+Donald “The Spook” Rumsfeld - he is a fraud. ms isnt caused by bad diet. Its an auto immune response to dental materials. 85% of most ms / transverse myelitis sufferers have had dental work done prior to onset of symptoms. this mcdougal tool is a charlatan and pushing a tree hugging agenda and taking advantage of vunerable people in pain. If his method worked then he would have a nobel prize...i guess he will be waiting a long time. get the dental metal out of your mouth and chelate and you will see improvements.

It's because those foods are so addicting and like Sawar says, it's the perfect combination of fat, salt, and sugar that makes it that way (the pleasure trap). There's scientists making this food that ensures it's an ideal combination that we like and want more and more of it.
@kimmieluna521

i agree on 100%. i am not a fan of hearing only what i want to hear, but hearing the actual truth no matter how unpleasant it may be. the last few months i've been using olive oil in almost every lunch (not excessively, maybe a good tablespoon or two depending on how much i cooked) and dinner, because i read about its health benefits and wanted to include it into my diet. when i think about canceling it, it's not a pleasant thought because i think: how do i make the food taste so good then? (my partner is not 'vegan', but since i prepare all meals during the day he mostly is) i want the food to taste convincing for him! on the other side, either i just close my eyes (and ears lol) and believe what i want to believe or i am tolerant and open for new information. i trust dr. mcdougall and know that he wouldn't speak up for something if he wasn't 100% sure about it. he's fighting what i am fighting for for 40 years, so why should i be openminded to everything except the idea of oil being bad and then completely shutting my ears - just because i dont like what i'm hearing?
@Jester123ish

Make that most people, and it's not just that they won't accept the truth, it's that they think they already know it and they're not up for a major change that would be required.

He has had some trials in his life that affect his appearance. Ever heard the adage "Don't judge a book by its cover", or maybe "Don't judge a man until you've walked a mile in his shoes"? "They're trying to make up a new truth" So true! The industries do a good job confusing people, myself included. I'm vegan but believed the "healthy fats" myth and have been eating too much olive oil, coconut oil and avocado oil. I was even at a "healthy foods" cooking show and when the chef had the Q & A at the end I asked if I can skip the oil. She snapped at me with, "You need healthy fats to survive!" Ok time to cut out the oil. Thanks for this webinar, very helpful!

This Q&A is extremely helpful when it brushes on some very good areas for the new vegan, such as what about omega-3s, and do we get enough fat. It puts my mind at ease, the answers. Ancel Keys is bashed by Robert Lustig. Now, I know a lot of what Lustig says is true, but I agree with the bigger picture that there are multiple problems, including too much fat and too much sugar. I have a bunch of new foods today, including potatoes. I need to buy potatoes cheaper, though. I live in an area where there are some farmer's markets but i never went before. I will soon.

I'm so looking forward to Mary's talk! Remembering what to eat and what not to eat is easy enough but knowing how to cook without the conventional methods like frying is a different story. Please, please, please, if you could make it more practical for us who are struggling with the how, i think we would all appreciate that a lot. I'm very slowly expanding my cooking knowledge, but not nearly fast enough to keep my tastebuds interested. I am struggling HARD. Especially with how to make things fast and more tasty. Too often i still cave for the fast and easy callories because of time. You know, slowcooking is nice and all that and i love making dishes that have to sit in a slowcooker for a day or sit and simmer for 2 hours, but it's not exactly practical most of the time and i imagine for most people because of work and childrearing obligations, especially in this time of double work hours and single households. Thank you Dr. McDougall. The oil is truely the hardest part to get rid of. It's in everything and used for everything. Yikes.

Eat fruit! There's nothing more convenient to eat when you're hungry, even just enough to keep you satisfied enough to cook something healthy. Also, my tastebuds have yet to get bored of a perfectly ripe mango! As for replacing oil, just use water - you need to use a little more than oil. It works exactly the same. I love making vegan curries and thought it'd be impossible without oil, but there's honestly no difference.

Also, your tastebuds will adapt with time. I used to hate salad without any kind of dressing, or cooked vegetables or other foods without salt. Now I savour the taste of both. I tend to make food in big batches and freeze what I can for convenient meals too, which really helps.

Most people can't give up oil because it is the only thing that I know of that gives food that crusty or crunching texture that we love so much. I've given up trying to get my fried potatoes crunchy. While water or vegetable juice will keep things from sticking to the pan they don't help to make anything crunchy.
@TijmenJanssen
@TijmenJanssen 8 лет назад
potato fries in the oven without any oil are way crunchier than deep fried things. oil doesn't make everything crunchy, more the opposite. the only thing is oil in the pan will make it easier to let the heat spread across the whole surface, heating more of the surface than without oil. giving it the illusion it's crunchier. but without oil things will stick to the pan and burn in hotspots (not so well spread heat). I haven't tried it but there are ceramic pans that don't stick, even without oil.

So much of what he says sounds convincing, but not what he says about coconut oil. I have seen significant positive results from it in dementia. My mother has dementia, it was getting very bad, one foot in the grave bad. About 2 years ago I saw videos of those who had treated their own dementia and who on the verge of losing all quality of life. Their positive experience made me curious. So I tried it with my mother, a tablespoon morning and evening. The first day she had more energy, by the second day she was out digging in her flowers, and over the next days her memory and mental clarity improved dramatically. It has not cured her, but it has given her so much of her life back. So maybe certain oils and certain uses of food oils do have unhealthy effects. But I know from two years of first-hand observation that it can really help cases of senior dementia. Not sure what Dr. McDougall has to say about this...but I see the positive difference coconut oil (drunk from a spoon or small cup). Maybe it falls under the category of medicine as he indicated. But for this use, it works as advertised.

So interesting, in the face of many many doctors and people promoting coconut oil I'm seeing a small but valuable percentage of doctors saying concentrated oils of any type are not so great. I believe McDougall, Esselstyn and Greger all agree on eliminating coconut and olive oil along with the obvious ones that nobody should ever eat. Thanks for the re-iteration here.

Even some doctors believe industry funded studies and media-pushed studies, such as the time magazine article with the cover showing a stick of butter and the words 'Eat Butter', 'Scientists labeled fat the enemy. This is why they were wrong'. That is literally 'fake news'. There is fake news out there, and it is killing many people.

Yeah, that's why I RARELY go out to eat. The best places to go out to eat, at least for me, are ethnic food places...NOT the "Western version of ethnic food"... but ACTUAL ethnic food places, like Ethiopian food, Indian, Chinese, Nepali... you name it! Those pub food spots are no good!

What if you put a little olive oil on a plate of leafy greens, such as a fresh salad or some chard or kale? How is that different than eating nuts or avocados? You are eating the oil with fiber and nutrients, etc., not just plain oil. Is it the total amount of oil you eat? Or is something about the refining process that is especially bad? Many studies have showed the health benefits of nuts, for instance. Lower risk of stroke, less risk of dying from all causes, helps in weight loss.

I rented a room from a Italian lady. She was an exceptional cook. She’d cook up my favourite : eggplants and peppers fried with basil in virgin olive oil. Delicious radicchio salads drizzled with extra virgin oil. By the time I left her home 6 months later we both laughed at how fat my gut became. And I was eating no junk food and walking up hills 1 hour a day

Just plain oil will actually bind with your native skin oils and then dissolve them. It takes more away than it helps you out. Ever tried just stopping this, and watch what happens?

I use coconut oil when out in the sun. In my case I have found that I don't burn and the next day I am tanned. I have been doing this for years. My thought is that the oil helps protects the skin and that too much skin cleaning removes the protective oils. I do listen to his videos and like them.

@sonjevity
@sonjevity 8 лет назад
that happened to me too. I read somewhere that it might happen, and to keep using it because the skin would get used to it. I kept using it and the breakouts did stop. I am looking for a lighter/thinner oil now though, as coconut oil doesn't feel good on me in the summer, it's so thick.
@thepetiteeclair9187
@thepetiteeclair9187 8 лет назад
Coconut oil is actually a comedogenic oil with a rating of 4 meaning it is very likely to clog your pores! There's a scale of 0-5 (the comedogenic rating) that each oil has in order to explain how likely it is to clog your pores. Imagine coconut oil is almost right at the top with a rating of 4!!! If you want to use an oil on your face that won't clog your pores I recommend hemp SEED oil (hemp seed NOT just hemp oil which can clog pores). Hemp seed oil has a comedogenic rating of 0 so it can't clog pores. :) You can use it to remove your makeup (if you wear any) and then apply aloe vera gel which is super moisturizing and oil free. A lot of peole recommend jojoba oil, but it has a comedogenic rating of 2 so it can still break you out.

I really like the way MCD still keeps the oldschool teachings going, starches are the best way to start. Gregor and Furman and others does have points that you can follow later on. But basics in plant foods are the cheapest and then after this change you follow others that might optimize your health. Yesterday i heard that half a billion have type 2 diabetes and the news said that a medical company will see growth in sales of their type 2 medicine, but no talk about what can be done food wise, and that's why people are obese and sick in the first place (NOTHING NEW HERE!!!).. Let's keep ppl stuffing themselves and we'll cure them with expensive medicine and not cure the real cause anyway.

I don’t blame them. You should shut your mouth and mind your own fucking business and let people live their own lives and make their own decisions. If you claim to be so concerned on their well being, try leading by example with your actions and behaviour and not your condescending criticism.

When people ask me why I’m so fit I tell them, then they cringe lol. It plants a seed that they can grow themselves. I don’t think preaching helps, it over fertilizing in my experience. Just be a superhuman example, and if they get bad enough, they will come to you because you have researched the science out there about an optimal health lifestyle that they should consider
