On old planes the switches and breakers connections are soldered and covered in shrink tubing. With time and vibration the solder cracks and you get intermittent connections. Check all the soldered connections in the alternator field circuit.

Matt Thanks for visiting my hometown of Gladwin. I was an airport rat there when i was a young boy. I was able to hitch rides and fly to many places back in the 1970’s. Saw and rode in a bunch of cool planes and places. Grummans, mooneys, bonanzas, beaver. Those days are long gone.

Gladwins airport saved a buddy and my bacon one night back in the 80s. We were flying at night VFR to the UP when suddenly the entire state of Michigan disappeared in dense fog. My buddy on a hunch headed toward Gladwin as he thought it was a little higher in elevation. He was right and the airport was visible in a sea of white as far as the eye could see. We landed about 1:00 am and called a motel who came and picked us up. Thankyou Gladwin!

I’m not an airplane mechanic by any stretch, but I do troubleshoot electrical issues, often with intermittent failures. I have a number of logging instruments that are left connected to the system in question. When retrieved, the data can be downloaded to a laptop or appropriate device and studied. Though not foolproof, it does capture events that never seem to happen during direct observation. Data loggers are often small and inexpensive, and I would think this route might give insight. The shotgun method is valid at times, but it’s always better to know a precise failure mode or cause.

Grounding can definitely be an issue and definitely intermittent, I've worked for Beechcraft for 14.5 yrs then a for IASCO (JAL) for 15 yrs on Bonanza's and Baron's nothing drives crazy like an intermittent electrical problem because it generally won't show while you're looking for it but as soon as you release it BOOM there it is!!! Makes you look like a Dufuss!! lol🤪🥴🤨 and yes it turned out to be ground but this time it was a wire that was not totally tight in it's crimp at the terminal! You could pull on it and it felt tight but after taking the tie wrap off the bundle you wiggle the wire and feel it loose!!!👍👍
@johnnicol338
@johnnicol338 3 года назад
Yep, it might be as simple as a connection that is loose but looks like it is on, or trying to ground to a painted surface. If all of the equipment has been checked or replaced, then it points to wiring and grounding, but that is easy for me to say from my armchair. The folks that Matt has seen have undoubtedly been down that track. It could literally be one small wire out of place in miles of harnesses, or a switch or light on the panel. I had an alternator fail while flying while in the circuit and it was concerning at the time in broad daylight with lots of traffic around me and no electrics. Flying at night knowing that the alternator could fail is not good pilot decision making at all and I have to be critical of that. That could have been the start of a cascade of issues.
@michaelholliday100
@michaelholliday100 3 года назад
Is it possible that you have a ground issue? I really think that you have an intermittent ground issue... Did they clean every ground point. I know that this sounds overly simplistic, but just a hunch from my experience... And when making all of my electrical contacts I use a liberal application of Dielectric Grease. to prevent corrosion from moisture between contact points.
@jimbobbyrnes

cleaning your battery contacts is the first thing a engineer would check. they have to do it atleast once every year or the plane wont even start. especially if your in a northern climate where they salt the roads/runways or a ocean waterborne plane. cars get the same issue but the batteries can handle much more corrosion.

@@mmi16 obviously due to the ground being the airplane itself. too bad they don't sell multimeters with 50 foot cables. hes gonna have some fun narrowing down the location. id test for a short/overdraw of the battery first seeing as how he was talking about new software/hardware that was just installed. infact im pretty certain that some of that gear is only meant to turn on when the alternator is running and so he wont really know there is a issue with power draw on the ground. but if it is a ground issue then all he really needs to do is test the connection between the battery and alternator but that must be working since he didn't lose any of his electrics.

Problems like this are a nightmare, if it’s not the alt, or the reg or the wiring, it’s a external influence/interference from another system, or hand of god. If your having weird stuff happen on multiple systems I would say it’s a dodgy earth wire, if there’s a main one and it can be moved to another location or earth point try that. It’s a problem that on the face of it seems ok to run with until the fault causes a bigger issue, at night and you loose electrical.

Hey matt, I had a very similar issue with my bonanza. So my question for you would be is the alternator actually not charging or are you just receiving an indication that it's not charging from the light? I would watch my voltage meter and I was getting a charge but the little light said that the alternator was out. We replaced a couple of things and it turned out to be the fuse. The fuse had not blown, but I guess at certain speeds and vibrations the fuse did not work correctly. A new fuse fixed the problem. Again, my alternator was actually charging the entire time it just indicated that it wasn't. Hopefully that helps.

As a designer of critical systems, including aero, I say backups exist to mitigate against single points of failure. They are redundancy if needed, when a primary fails. Using the backup as a primary is not its intended use. You are in different territory if that also fails. In this case, was there a backup alternator too AND basic battery power? Is this enough to sustain sufficient drain and time? IDK. *I really enjoy the videos*; but I would deal with the alternator incident differently if flying over water and using IFR, night, etc. Just saying.

@MattGuthmiller It's not your alternator. How I know this: No dimming or overly bright avionics, no buzzing. A bad one does these things. Based on what I saw from the video when you were flying the first route, I have reason to believe you have a faulty fuse causing this. Because your alternator is just fine and the failure light came on is exactly why I believe so. If that's not the case, there is a short somewhere in your electrical system causing it. I recommend trying a simple test on EVERY wire connection with an electrical meter. You just have to have your plane parked with the engine running to find it. If you don't find one, there's a chance your failure light is loose. It's just like when you have a good lightbulb on a lamp not working but when you tighten it that fixes it. Hope this helps you:)

new hardware? is your alternator light on because of voltage spikes? on the ground pop the circuits for all your onboard hardware until the alternator light comes back on/off. whatever triggered the light has a short draining your voltage and it may only draw juice to the short when a certain device is turned on and running. you'll probably have to diagnose this issue by disconnecting every circuit and testing every onboard device's power draw independently then testing the device itself to ensure there is no short in the connection between the battery and device.

Electrical systems will fail yes, however the engine will not stop. Aviation engines use magnetos, so no need for a separate electrical source for the engine to run. I'd dare to wager that i would be able to find the problem. Hook up a bunch of cheap V and A meters to the wiring, mount them to a meter board, and point a camera at them, and then fly until the problem starts. However, i might not be able to do any repairs in exactly the way you may need to be certificated or whatever. Don't forget, 'works half' is also an option. I rode my motorcycle for 2 years with it barely starting in winter, because my voltage regulator was putting out voltage, but only barely enough to keep the battery at 12,5v which is not 'fully charged'. Didn't think much of the bad starting, i was riding in freezing temperatures after all. Only because of an unrelated issue (chafed through wire insulation) did i measure the voltage and did i find the half-working regulator.

This could be a number of issues. The most common cause of this issue is the battery is failing causing the alternator to over-stress itself, resulting in repeated failure from wear. Alternatively, the rectifier/diode assemblies in the alternator are failing because of poor connections, and little to zero charge. This can occur with the voltage regulator as well, resulting in little to zero charge and also overcharge. This could be as simple as stripping some insulation to get cleaner copper for a better connection to the alternator, but I doubt it. I hope you have plenty of repair cash on-hand, because if the issue isn't the battery there's a 90% chance that a mechanic is going to be chasing issues in your wiring harnesses for a few weeks seeking lost grounds, damaged wires, and worn out wires. The labor on wiring harness work is some of the most expensive labor in the industry. Especially if harnesses need re-loomed. On top of that, alternator failures have a tendency to damage other electrical components. I would avoid flying IFR and night-time for the time being, if at all possible. Consider your alternator failed, even if it's charging, because of the failure trend. N367HP probably needs an electrical overhaul.

Some of you guys on this channel are JUST PLAIN NUTS !! Have you considered the legality and airworthiness implications of continued use of this aircraft. Yeah go ahead and encourage him to keep flying it untill he figures it out, Thats what you get for internet experts. You can look for AC ripple downstream of the alternator if the diodes are failing. sometimes the only safe resolution is a harness / loom replacement. [ Whatever the cost ] If the faults are associated with one alternator in favor of another then that narrows the problem. I would be very carefull about using circuit breakers in an airplane as you would an electrical switch. those things blow out for a reason.

Great video and great editing. As old fashioned as I am, I still like steam gauges. (7000 hours of flying single engines, three alternator failures). I think Bob Riplley from ABS has it right. Put your alternators and air pumps on a 500 hour rotation for overhaul or replacement. In your defense wasn't your backup alternator still working?

It's interesting because when she said she heard a noise, in her headset I'm assuming, that to me almost sounds like you might have some sort of grounding issue.. It's very disheartening when you have continuous in flight issues that cannot seem to be replicated on the ground or in a shop.. Keep it up, I'm sure someone will figure it out! I have worked on cars since my fifteenth. You say grounding issues. that's quite an issue and potentially dangerous, Electricity tries to find an electrical ground anywhere it can; even through another electrical device sometimes resulting in unintended operation of other devices and overload of circuits. The idea here is not to duplicate the fault as much as troubleshoot, But untill that is sucessfuly done I would decide against continued use of this aircraft. Airframe and avionics Electricians are not a dying breed !!

@williamlabarre4755
@williamlabarre4755 3 года назад
Most likely a "grounding" issue, in the sense that there is a chassis circuit fault. All grounding connections need to be investigated, perhaps bonded or bypassed. Not a happy thing, I had a Pontiac TransSport that did the same thing. It was a corroded grounding bond to the engine subframe. Bypassed with new connection, voila. Sold it quick.

Sounds like a shunt field issue with your electrical system. A faulty wire to your battery system isn't allowing a magnetic field to be created for your generator. Vibrations and climb/bank angles are causing loss of connection and subsequent loss of power generation.

Second question, why were you flying cross country with an alternator that goes out regularly? Last question, wouldn’t it be a good idea to trade up? Just wondering.
