I have a similar controller from Razer, but haven't used it much because phone screens are just too small imho. Don't get fooled by the big diameter that is shown in the spec sheet, phone screens are very long and if you stream a 16:9 game to it then your 6.5" screen may effectively only show the game at about 5.5". One other point though, I appreciate you need sponsors and I'm glad they are willing to sponsor you, but it's a little nasty how unclear your sponsor spots are. Have had that a couple times now in your videos where I'm just slowly wondering why you're being so positive about this thing and slowly realizing that oh... You're doing a sponsor... You only say it's a sponsor at the end. Don't know if they pay more if you do it like this but it's kind of scummy.

Nintendo came up with the cross shaped directional pad for their Game & Watch series of handheld games. They even patented the design. However, the patent did little to discourage competitors because they simply had to use a different shape (like a circle) for their own directional pads. Nintendo couldn't stop them because there was prior art in that the Mattel Intellivision console had circle shaped directional pads. They had no markings or raised portions, but they were essentially directional pads.
@caleasthetic
@caleasthetic 10 месяцев назад
But sometimes patent laywers goof real hard. like wiht the back paddles. Theire where already previous devices or controllers that had paddle shaped back buttons. Yet corsair still got the patent. Even after it was known that there was prior art. That is also why valve eventaully won the apeal. (atleast tho my knowledge they won).

I love Steam Input. I sometimes find it as enjoyable to 'program' in a controller scheme for a game as actually playing the game (there have been games where I would spend more time on controls than in the game at the start). One recent thing I'm proud of is my Diablo 4 (toggle to M&K with a button) config, which my PS5 friend that I play with hates, because he can't hover over items, skills, link stuff in chat quick or even chat. You can't even organize your chests as they will be placed and taken out at the first available spot when you press [A]. With a mouse, you just pick them up and drop them where you want. All the menus are on a virtual Steam menu so no more bumpers to go to other screens and much more. I love it :) - I also want to give a shoutout to Steam's Notes, which are very helpful so you don't have to alt-tab or use your phone to check something. I have some of those set up too. But as for copy-ing Valve... You're right... We're seeing these new handhelds coming out that do try and pack their devices with gyro, trackpads and all sorts of extra buttons. So from a hardware perspective they may be comparable, but they are no where near when it comes to software, that's for sure.

I had spent hours in the controller configurator without even a game open Last time I was fiddling with it, I figured out a way to take advantage of the ‘hip fire’ setting on the analog trigger, without outputting the analog trigger pull, but still being able to use the analog trigger with a slow pull
@caleasthetic
@caleasthetic 10 месяцев назад
But unfortunatly theire are not alot ofo people who want to spend hours to learn steaminput. I am also one of these so called nutcases that spends hours on making a config to get gyro and flick stick in most shooters. And i still try to learn as much as i can about steam input so i caan also make my tracpads do multiple things with modeshifs. But one of my bigest gripes is that steam can be buggy. A few fays ago i made a config for evil west. For the gyro i had to swithc the sensitivity on the ads mode by ading a layer on fullpull, but sometimes the alyer did not seem to unload when i let go of the trigger. Wich messed up my gyro and flick stick sensitivty. Also theire is still a save bug that will not let you save directly after each cahnge. You need to back out of the menu completly and then go back in to save the changes. This is still going on after month.
@KuittheGeek
@KuittheGeek 10 месяцев назад
One of the reasons the Steam Controller was so amazing was that it actually sent the configuration down to the firmware level. So when you pressed a button, it would actually respond with the key it was mapped to, it didn't have to go through a translation layer like you would see with the numerous controller to keyboard programs for the PS3 and PS4 controllers. It didn't add latency because it was legitimately just sending "w" when you pushed the stick forward, instead of sending the analog axis value, then determining which axis it was, and checking against some threshold value, then finally converting it to "w". Yes, that doesn't take that much time, but it still takes time, thus adding latency. Cutting out the middle man made the Steam Controller so amazing. I really wish Valve had kept the hardware enabled dual stage triggers. You can still get it through software, but I don't think it is as good. Those with the gyro and touch pads made the Steam Controller feel so good and it was a lot of fun to play with.

I realized how incredible steam input is, when installing mods to my games on the deck. Often mod menus are tied to hotkeys like "insert", "f11", "f12" etc. and I used a wireless keyboard at first to manage that up until I realized I could simply reconfigure the backpedals to the hotkeys I need.

My favorite setup is to raise sensitivity so a full edge-to-edge swipe does a 360, cut vertical scale down to 40 or lower, increase smoothing and use with Gyro. Trackpad does fast, controllable horizontal turning while gyro does fine aim. The closest you can get to the feeling of a mouse, IMO.
@ThePaperKhan
@ThePaperKhan 10 месяцев назад
The trackpads in my opinion really help especially for older games or ones that were not designed for a controller in mind. Thanks to the near effortless of assigning controls, I comfortably beat a full playthrough of Elder Scrolls III with little issues camera or control wise when I was traveling. I've also noticed this helps with its sequel, Oblivion, as you no longer have to get frustrated with trying to move the mouse cursor over your potion menu so you won't die.

For other console makers, they are stuck with their new inputs if not adopted each time they innovate on their own because game dev might not be interested in it. However Steam being naturally a PC has an advantage on making a custom input without ruining game dev's original intended input. The first console to support an analogue stick was actually the Saga Saturn when they released a 3D control pad for it.
@CFWhitman
@CFWhitman 10 месяцев назад
Technically, the first console that had an analog stick was the 1292 Advanced Programmable Video System released in 1978. Of course there was also the Atari 5200 in 1982, and then there was the Vectrex, also in 1982, which actually had a self-centering analog joystick (the first one on a console that was really usable because of the self-centering). I actually remember this console being readily available in department stores. The first analog thumbstick (rather than "full-sized" joystick) was apparently the Dempa XE-1 AP controller for the Sega Genesis in 1989. Only a few games supported its analog features, though some of those games were made by Sega. The Saturn 3D Control Pad was released about two weeks after the Nintendo64 with its controller in 1996. Technically, though, the Nintendo64 controller wasn't analog (though it did a pretty good imitation).

The dream is fully implementing Steam Input into games on Steam. Where when you make changes to the controls the game recognizes that and reflects on the controller that you're using seamlessly. It would be a final step in making controls truly personalized. Instead of mapping buttons on a controller to buttons on a keyboard or whatever, you map the actual in-game action. Honestly, this might be a thing already. But if it is, not a single game that I play uses it.

Why I wanted the steam deck so badly. I was locked in to the Xbox due to my cousin sharing my profile and me buying gamepass anyway and needing a Blu-ray player resulting in me getting a series x. The OLED model just happened to come out at the same time and when I desperately needed to upgrade my display and wanted to play indies, cprgs and action RPGs of old, while I already learned how to emulate on my phone and desktop. The device came in right when I was able to harness all it's power. Now I have the ultimate gamepass PC machine, am actually suing all the free games I got from all the launchers on desktop and I'm emulating PS2, 3ds and switch games. It's mind-blowing how fantastic this thing is and how incredible the community is. It's just he best of all worlds. No loading, waiting on menus, storage issues. I play rts and competitive shooters on the desktop, blockbusters like Alan Wake 2 and dead space remaster on the series x on the new family TV with Atmos and all the rest on steam deck. It's been a dream. It's hard resisting using even my RU-vid and browsing on the deck in bed, since I don't wanna burn out the battery anymore than gaming already does.

Wonderful video. I think i started following you after stadia launched and kept beeing hear since portability gaming is since then a target i really like to achieve. What steam does with steam input is insane. But it definitely needs some commitment of the gamer getting used to it. I think this is one of the main reasons why its not often used by many companies... Using and setting standards taking all the work away from the user even when this means limiting the possibilities is the way nowadays to fo, to reach the casual users. This is for example in my eyes one of the main success reasons of apples devices. You always were limited like in a golden cage, but this makes the people feel safe and comfortable. I really like the wild west but on the other side sometimes i want something to just work so I understand both worlds.... With the classic thumbsticks on one side and the trackpads on the other side i think steam achieved addressing both worlds... One question i have. Can steam input used inside of geforce now the same way like on a pc or your device or will the gfn xbox driver be in your way?

Thank you! Great Video! Can't wait for a new Valve Controller. Hey it would be awesome, if you make a Dualsense on Steam Video, tbh.. there are sooo many options, idk where to beginn. I also saw your SF6 Video. The Dualsense reminds me of the Steam Deck in so many ways!

I wouldn't say Valve is innovative in any real sense, but they do commit to polishing for PC what actual innovators like Nintendo have spent decades blazing the trail for.

It's the little things with Steam Input. I often have to cast on the go in FFXIV, and not only being able to add a d-pad to the right trackpad, but add one that refuses to do diagonals, is damned useful to help prevent fat finger inputs.

I have been saying this is why the steam deck is greater than any other handled..... No other company thinks about the controls of playing the game, they just think "this game needs to run +1-5 Fps better than this other device" Nothing else has gotten even close to Steam Input

Small correction Nintendo did not invent the analog sticks, analog sticks have been in use since the early 80s in consoles and on the pc, in fact the first pc joysticks were potentionmeter analog sticks with a single button, but there were others, like the Vectrex which also had analog sticks!

As a Steam Controller owner I said it before: The idea is great, especially the trackpads are game changing. But the design/layout just wasn't. And they proofed that I was right with the Steam Deck. It's the perfect shape and has the best layout for it. The only weakspot are the shoulder buttons. But even those are serviceable.

Have you heard about the issues with the headphone jack on the new OLED decks? There is a loud buzzing coming thru and it's apparently a common issue. I have tried 2 different headphones and it's present for both, and not present when used on my LCD deck. I'd love to know if you get any buzzing thru headphones too

I love the trackpads but i feel they take too much space for something i dont use often. Making the D Pad and face buttons more smaller and in a more awkward position. For example i find it harder to do quarter circle motion for fighting games because my thumb isnt resting in a nice angled position

Its so sad that the dual stage triggeres arent present in the steam deck. The slight haptic bump isnt the same 😢 I have a steam controller but as you mentioned its awkward to hold and I could never force me to use it because of that, it was too expensive and felt way to cheap. The Steam Deck really is a Joy to use, I wish there would be a Controller Mode because its way more comftable than the Steam Controller. Would like to use my Steam Deck as a Controller because its the better Steam Controller. Also Imagine a WiiU Style Input Scheme together with the Steam Deck additional information on your second controller screen

As an owner of an lcd deck and OLED now….the best controller I find for docked use is the DualShock 4….with the trackpad for left and right click including mouse aim…and then gyro controls with intricate adjustments for gyro…I would get the dualsense5 but that battery…id rather use one of my 3 ps vita’s for another controller 😂

A large part of why the wiiu didn’t catch on was because two screen gameplay doesn’t work out, unless the screens are immediately next to each other And what did you use dual stage triggers for anyway? I put multiple actions on analog triggers and don’t care for dual stage triggers so I’m curious.

The steam controller is hands down the best PC gaming controller. With it and steam input I played through all of botw and totk 100% and over 1800 hours in botw alone solely on the steam controller. In totk I made it so when I hold the ability swap button the right trackpad becomes a touch wheel and I can swap abilities instantly. Needless to say, I love my steam controller

The Dual Sense controller is such a tragedy. So much features yet devs are given no incentive of turning any of those features into functions. Meanwhile the Steam input continues in proving itself a miracle, adding to the reasons you would buy the Steam Deck over its competitors. No other handheld can give you the experience that the Steam Deck can provide with its ability to play ANY game *HOWEVER* you want. No need to seperate the joystick in order to turn it into a mouse, or any strange jargon, as alternative options already exist in order to achieve anything that you want.

I am of the opinion that every single mainstream controller needs gyro, back buttons and trackpads. In that priority order. And these should be configurable via a Steam Input like feature. Given devs simply don't support things like gyro and back buttons by default then the controller should.
@InitialFailure

@smidlee7747
@smidlee7747 10 месяцев назад
@@InitialFailure The back buttons is more useful on a PC handheld. One example I often mapped "Toggle Magnifier" on to R4 which helps a lot playing on a 7" screen. Gyro is very useful for fps to compete against keyboard and mouse. With keyboard and mouse you don't need any of those features.
@InitialFailure

@smidlee7747 ah I can see that. I kinda stopped competitive gaming about 5-10 years ago when cheating became so rampant it killed PC competition for me.
@ryan-oo3lh

@@InitialFailure I'll never use a controller without back buttons again. I usually map the analog stick clicks to them and it's way easier than clicking a stick down imo (and there's an added benefit of less wear and tear on the sticks). I'll sometimes also map face button or dpad controls to the back buttons, which allows me to take my thumbs off the sticks less often. It just makes so much sense to give your other fingers something to do besides gripping the controller.

I was so disappointed when I joined a steam deck related group online, before I had a steam deck, I figured the steam deck was a controller based pc, so literally everyone would be using steam input now, and no one cared a single bit about it, and everyone keeps saying ‘just connect a mouse and keyboard’ And my appreciation for it diminished as well since getting a steam deck and finding home button chord configurations aren’t allowed to be changed…only on steam deck tho…? Neat feature I guess Oh and the new controller configurator sucks ass anyway so I use old steam for the old big picture mode

I thought I would never use the track pads on my Steam Deck, until I played this visual novel/bartending game that piqued my interest and I was kinda forced to use them. I didn't realize how easy they were to use, and it made playing the game that much more enjoyable as a result. I play mostly play fighters, beat em ups, shoot em ups, JRPGs and some racing games, so using the track pads was kinda low on the totem pole for me. Now I want to try out other genres of games that make use of the track pads even moreso than before.
