Can’t wait for pushback methods video. Considering a standard 3 member consulting team, if they would consistently put limits on their daily deliverables it significantly reduces stress and increases WL balance together with the quality of their work. The way of working needs to be simply communicated properly at the initial meetings.

Think you are missing the fact that you are from Germany and she is from the USA. I myself am from the Netherlands and cultural differences might be a factor. For instance people from the USA are on average more "cocky/arrogant" than people from Denmark or Sweden for sure. So this might be why she experienced this more in consultancy in USA than you in Germany.

Love this video! All of these points are 100% accurate and worth thinking through before joining, with one exception-my firm (one of the MBB) has moved to hybrid ways of working since the pandemic but it’s very case dependent. This has made the work much more sustainable :) Pushing back is key-I found it so much easier to manage starting with my first case as a PL/EM last year. It takes a couple of years to get your bearings but really worth it for 2-5 years as a career accelerator, or more if it works for your life

It's funny how consulting firms seems all the same. While watching your videos, I relate to many things and many things you say make 100% sense. On the other hand, I saw the video you're reacting to before you release your impressions and I could relate as well. I work for a consulting firm in Brazil and we're very often understaffed and everything is a priority. I remember past june that I went to Portugal for vacation and I was at a car rental company and there was a girl from another consulting firm with her laptop, working nonstop in line, while sitting or standing up, while actually signing papers for renting the car. She finally stored her laptop only when she actually needed to drive, but then she asked her husband/boyfriend to take over the wheel and kept working. She was clearly on "day off" because they had quite a few bags and even a kid or at least I would assume so. I'm looking forward to see how consulting firms will deal with this new hybrid work system.

Hi Heinrich. I find the content of your channel very interesting. Everyone knows how Consulting job at MBBs is stressful. And this shows that three is a big need to understand what tips work to reduce the stress, especially when it come to shortening presence times (for example to be more with family). I have not seen anyone who covered such a content, and this would be very useful for many of your followers and youtube viewers. Could you please make a video on that?! I believe it is very much needed. e.g. What is optional to attend (E.g. team dinners, ...)? How to better manage time in a work day, so that you can work less in the evening (and be more with your family)? How to deal with personal appointments? Pusing back methods!

I think all of this has a very high “it depends” factor. I had quite a different experience over the last 5 years. Of course I had a project where I worked till midnight and 1 or 2 nights till 1 am, however that was just 8 weeks in my total 5 years. After this project ended I had so many calls with the Partner where they apologized because they didn’t see what was happening on the ground to us. It might benefit that I started in Amsterdam and I learned how to push back, but I actually have had great experiences. Eg now I’m in South East Asia with my wife for a 6 month transfer. We’re enjoying our time here and I can go to gym 3 times during the work week for 90 minutes and go to bed every day between 10:30 pm and midnight.

Hi Heinrich, you introduce yourself as a strategy consultant. Do you mind elaborating on the difference between a management and strategy consultant? I know there are a lot of jokes going around "McKinsey finished the strategy, someone call Deloitte for implementation" - how much trust is there in that? Does McKinsey (or better MBB) only do strategy consulting so develop the strategy and "just" that? No business operations or data analytics or anything like that? Thank you!

I think the personality of your team has to do so much with cultural(company & regional). I worked with a firm based out of Austria and everyone was very humble as Heinrich mentioned. However now I work for an American firm and its clear that people are more self centered. The differences in etiquette shows during dinners.

The ridiculous thing about her statements is that if you think going to a start up company is any better then you will get weeded out there even quicker than at a consulting company. They don’t they don’t have time for a ton of strategist when they are surviving with only 6 to 12 months of runway. I’ve been at software start ups the last decade and the people who could never hack it were always the people who came from consulting groups who were super smart but had very little operational experience to get the work done by leading a team.

I used to work as a SAP Consultant doing Implementations and also some developing. 80k € , almost stress free and i really enjoyed the work creating something with my own skills. To further enhance my Management skills i chose to become a project leader and now i do indeed enhance my peoples and organisation skills but it is so annoying to be in all those meetings and depend on the contribution of others instead of doing it by myself. So I definitly will go back to IT Consulting, for me it s way more fullfilling and the extra money is definitly just Schmerzensgeld. Nobody in the management seems to enjoy his work. But i guess in the end it s a personality question.

Why don’t consulting firms just slow down enough to let their consultants catch up? So what if the deliverables are a week later than promised? Why even commit to dates when the amount of analysis required to competently answer the research questions would hardly be well understood in the early phases of the project. My thinking is that the feedback cycle should be shorter and low fidelity in the beginning of the project and then get longer towards the end with deliverables becoming more stable and polished. Importantly, co-owned with the client partner roles. The value of a consultant is not diminished in this model in my opinion. On the contrary, thought partnering with the client in the early stages, especially when uncertainty is high, can be a powerful way of engaging.
