Brilliant interview Mark Bouris. I have known Charlie since 2000 and he has operated on my mother 3 times when she was 60, 72 and 75. If it wasn't for Charlie she wouldn't have made it to 61. Everything in this interview that Charlie said is 100% true. My mothers last 2 operations he never charged her 1cent, even for her follow-ups visits, we never asked him to, he just did this from the kindness of his heart. I have never met a surgeon to hug and kiss his patients, he treats everyone as family. I am so disgusted with Australia, and the media who has destroyed this brilliant surgeon, the best in the world, other surgeons s should embrace him and beg him to sit in theatre to learn something. One thing Charlie didn't mention, like my mother he has patients he manages for for many years with follow-up consultations and surgery, these sick people now have nobody to take care of them or operate if required, and sadly they may die. I just wish I can do something to help. I just hope he continues in another country, Greece will welcome you with open arms. God bless you Charlie.

The media has absolutely vilified Charlie. Working in the same hospital as him, I can tell you all the surgeons there are extremely talented, including Charlie. Surgery is very, very, risky in its nature, especially neurosurgery. As unfortunate as it is, complications can happen and are common - some are simply unavoidable no matter how good the surgeon is. Unfortunately due to a few of his cases been sensationalised by the media, he being is shunned and disparaged unfairly. Australia is losing such a great asset.

Thanks for sharing this interview Mark Bouris and Charlie Teo. My cousin was operated on by Charlie around a decade ago and is doing well. As discussed in the interview, the outcome wasn't without any complications, however it extended his life, he's still thriving and seen his then young kids grow into great young adults. It's horrible what Australia's done to Charlie and devastating for all those people that haven't been given the opportunity to explore an option other than "do nothing and wait to die". Sad indeed.

Brilliant Interview. This is coming from someone that Charlie has operated on 4 times and saved my life. He tells it how it is and that's what I love about him and the fact that he operated on me when others wouldn't. Yes, sure there were risks which I was fully aware of. Everything he says in the interview is true and unless you have been patient, been through the journey with Charlie you wouldn't know unlike these so call journalist that perceive that they know everything when in fact they do not. Thank you for this interview Mark. I love Charlie & have known him since he was a Resident at the old Kids Camperdown in Sydney. I knew Charlie over many years and he is exactly the same as he was then. He has not changed at all, except he had a lot of thick black hair on his head back in the day 😊. He is very intelligent, has a great thirst for knowledge, is very caring & passionate about his patients and his colleagues, he is extremely honest & has a great sense of right & wrong & unfortunately to his detriment, he calls people out when they need to be called out (what does that say about society today). He is down to earth, friendly & personable. It was always a joy to work with Charlie, he is a wonderful man and a an excellent Neurosurgeon who does not deserve this witch hunt. This interview was a wonderful exchange between two intelligent men. Thank you & all the very best Charlie.

Thanks for this great interview. Those people who have tried to bring you down should hang their head in shame. Charlie operated on my daughter eight years ago. She was in unbearable pain but after the op she has lived pain free. Our family will be forever grateful.

If a doctor tells you a tumour is inoperable and another doctor tells you their willing to operate but there are risks, I'm guessing most would want to take the risks, especially if inoperable means doing nothing but waiting to die. I wasn't familiar with this doctor before but he comes across as genuine and full of integrity. We're losing a national treasure😢😢

Great work Mark. Charlie is so insightful you can see and hear the passion he has for what he does. I respect him immensely the way he has carried himself through it all is nothing short of heroic. He is 100% honest and transparent about all the risks but also the glory. I have no doubt in my mind if I needed surgery I would go to Charlie. My hope for him is that he is able to do what he has been gifted to do in Australia again.

Brave on all fronts. We need more people like Charlie Teo in this world. Thank you Mark for interviewing Charlie. Its been insightful and an eye opener to what goes on behind the doors, especially with bureaucracy. Egos should never come into play for doctors, yes accountability is important but stopping the life saving work that Charlie does, well there lies a tragedy.

Here is a guy who is at the apex of his field. It took him most of his life to get there. Then they vilify him and pull him down.

Absolutely brilliant interview AUSTRALIA should make this guy one of our greatest heroes and exports for what he does, and the way that he handles himself and literally the way that he changes lives for the better… Charlie, you need to keep telling the story and keep telling people that lives can be saved. That’s the greatest of all narratives.

A whole heap of unsurprising stuff on this one. Most human beings in positions of power suck. Tow the line or suffer the consequences. Awesome pod, Mark and Charlie!

What a great interview. So insightful and to hear more information and details from Charlie about what was clearly left out of the 60 Minutes investigation. Australia has lost a brilliant surgeon. But surgeons around the world are gaining knowledge and skills by having him in operating theatres teaching. A small silver lining. I do wonder... what if the surgeons accusing Charlie were told they had an inoperable brain tumour and weeks to live? Would they accept that diagnosis and think nothing could be done... or with all the information they have, would they call Charlie for help?

Australia has lost a fantastic neurosurgeon based on bullying within the medical fraternity & slanted media reports. If I was requiring brain surgery I would on trust Charlie Teo being fully aware of the consequences & results.

Charlie is the perfect example of brilliance bordering on insanity. Its a fine line he may have crossed at times but the amount of successful surgeries speak for themselves.

The Australian public should be able to access Teo's services if they want. Let the medical board put all their warnings on Teo if that makes them happy, but don't stop him from doing his job. Many are still alive because he gave a different second opinion.

Although, in a strange way, we’re lucky this is happening to Charlie as he’s talking about it and let everyone know the injustice in this country. Story: 32 year female with head aches had the diagnosis brain tumor. Told no possibilities. No surgery. 🛑 regrouped immediately, with outside insistence by a close relative called Mayo Clinic and within 24 hours gave her a fighting chance to live for her children her youngest was breast feeding, Never ever take one doctors summary. Surgery gave her 15 months so far and looks like we get more time with very MRI.

They pull you out because you expose their incompetence or their manipulation of the system. As a teenager wrapping red corrugated paper around stacks of biscuits and placing the stacks into Christmas tins, I made the boring job interesting by being as skilled and efficient as I could. I was moving too quickly and very soon I was being sent tins where the stacks were “fallen” and I had to hold the tin, fix the mess and add my own stack. Got warned in the lunch break to slow down and fit in.

Thank you for this interview Mark and thank you Charlie for speaking the way you did, it was awesome. Just note this TP syndrome you talk about right at the end needs to be fixed, there are Aussie battlers out there and most people are , but if some people battle their way through and make it to the top, we should let them be and respect them. Yes we must have criticism , yes we must have skepticism, but there are times when it is just way overboard even when the evidence is there. Why continue to insist that everyone has to stay at the same level by either down playing their achievements or worst still pull them down this way when they are at the top. Don't forget that these high achievers no matter what field is what can lift a country up economically. The more annoyed these people get and leave as a result , the worse of Australia will be.

What a disgrace they way this man has been treated . He should be encouraged not vilified. Not everyone can be saved, but he has managed to give so much to many that without his intervention, would have died sooner. This is life people, no one gets out alive. Remember that. I have personal experience of a younger doctor (second opinion we sought) too afraid to disgree with the opinion of our first doctor (a professor) and my husband suffered unnecessarily. We persisted with the younger doctor and at the end the professor agreed with the younger doctor's opinion (even though he was not our doctor anymore), there is a strong party line amongst doctors, dictated by seniority, not skill.

I will forever be thankful to the 1st responders and the medical staff at the hospital for the care given to me following a rear axle departure and a subsequent horrific 110kmh accident on the F3. It was apparently a scene where the first responders were unanimously in agreement nobody should have survived, let alone me being conscious throughout. I never saw the car after it ,and received no head injuries, but was busted up down the entire left side from leaning into the middle onto the console to save myself, and the violent motions of the Statesman destroying itself against the sandstone abutments transferring that energy onto my flailing body. Their reassurance and determination despite my utter defeat I'll never forget nor take for granted. ❤❤❤. I also belatedly apologise to all the central coast people who were made hideously late to work that day as a result of that Statesman's death. 😔😔

A brilliant and insightful interview. Dr Charlie Teo is a great man doing God's work. I commend him for dedicating his life to saving others and he should keep practising as long as he lives!!!!

If you never leave the safety of your house you won't be hit by a car crossing that street or crashing to the ground due the that parachute not deploying. Life is all about risk and reward. That being said as Teo acknowledges when the risk comes home to roost the results can be devesting. We really need to address the tall poppy syndrome here in Aust. Another tick for a Bouris Podcast.

Very good interview. My only criticism is that the individual conducting the interview is too ignorant/uneducated in medical/neurology for it to be substantial enough to prove that Dr Teo is a victim of the broken medical system in Australia where the clinician always at risk dependent on whether you can keep everyone happy which is seldom the case. Secondly, the loss of a neurosurgeon of this calibre will cost lives and have a ripple effect on the entire industry. This registered nurse is terrified at how easy it has been to trun this man from revered to dangerous. I have empathy for the people that suffered poor outcomes, but this is the sad reality of his field. What a loss for Australia.

Charlie, im facinated to hear the stats of how many patients you had that were told had inoperable tumours that u saved as compared to how many bad outcomes u had. Ultimately, these people have no hope, so if u save 3000 people and have 3 or 4 bad outcomes, I say thats a risk most reasonable people will be prepared to take

1:11 he is authentic and presents as calm and honest. He looks healthy and well. He is speaking intelligently. He is therefore trustworthy. He has a gift. Not all have a gift.

I don't understand. The tumor is supposed to be inoperable, and therefore the tumor would likely turn deadly. What is the problem of Charlie giving that one last chance, if the person is dead anyway?

No doctor is a Messiah i treat doctors as they treat me I think Teo has had it very hard from his peers 😢

Gliomas are not surgically curable conditions. At best , and not considering possible complications, you enhance life by twice as long as adjuvant modalities would on their own. A part of surgeons responsibility is to manage risk , to allocate scares resources appropriately and to be responsible to not just individual patients but also for the community in which we live.

Massive polarising figure. Great decisions are not made at times of high emotion and anxiety. Great example of where patients need 'medical advisers' into all options available. How anyone, who has been diagnosed with a terminal tumours, can make 'good' decisions is incredibly difficult.

Im amazed why the medical board here in Australia took away the license of such a knowledgeable and intelligent doctor charlie teo. There will be no one else on par or come close to his knowledge. Thats the problem with people. Once others get jealous of you saving lives , they will try be bring you down. Australia will never progress in medicine if they keep doing that to their doctors.

Sad to think how many people this great man would have saved ,if it wasn't for the jealous pocket lining surgeons

Am I crazy or is this a verbatim profile of a narcissist from a textbook. Mark seems to dance around it accidentally. But he really is one of those cult leaders just in scrubs.

You may never truly understand this man until you've been chronically ill yourself. When you go see one idiot (e.g. an ENT), then go see another for a second opinion. If they know you've gone to see one already, they're afraid to give their own opinion on your condition as theyre afraid they'll upset the previous person.

What about all the future patients that could be helped by Charlie? What happens to them? The medical board, the rival neurosurgeons and the media that persecuted him, do they understand all the needless early deaths they are causing? Are they really so callous and indifferent? God asks us to love one another not destroy each other.

At just over 1 hour mark, it struck me that the difference risks didn't seem to have been quantified? I would expect the doctor to say something like: the win-win chance is 50%, the win-lose chance is 20%, the lose-lose risk is 5%, etc. Or did he simply ommitted here in the interview? These different scenarios are surely not like playing Russian roulette with equal risk/chance assigned to each of the trigger-pullings.

I may have a brain tumour. I'm waiting for a CT scan. It will most likely be benign but could be malignant. I would want the offer to operate if it was malignant and it was the last option I had over dying from the tumour.
