I’d like to talk about my no poo method experiment. For more information and images I screenshot from weekly instagram stories read the blog here: www.nano-yoga.com/2021/05/18/...
If you're new here. Hello I'm Nanaco, Nano Yoga is a space for you to practice yoga, with wellness and mindset tips and relatable conversations to help make you Feel Good.
Did it work out for me? Yes
Did my objective of improving my dry scalp / dandruff work? Yes!!
Did it blow my mind how much I’ve been marketed for 30 years of my life that I must use shampoo? YES!!
I’ll go through a intro of what No Poo is
Why I did it
How I did No Poo
How it went
And current results 8 weeks (2 months) in.
Don’t use baking soda.
If you'd like to see the update a year later here's the video: • 1 YEAR LATER NO POO ME...
Hi! Nanaco here from Nano Yoga, usually I show weekly yoga videos for snowboarders and skiers but the pandemic, the Black Lives Matters protests and grieving my father’s death which happened right as the COVID lockdowns started in France, but I sadly never visited. I’ve been a total potato and haven’t had the courage to post much on youtube. Especially as I’d like to move more into wellness and also other topics which interests me and hopefully for you too.
What’s no poo?
No Poo, means No Shampoo, cos you can’t Not Poo for the rest of your life but you can not use shampoo! This seriously blew my mind, that this was a thing and yes I did have a friend explain this to me but his hair did also always look greasy, so I wasn’t convinced.
Until The Fuddhist, an influencer who advocates for natural alternatives in food and health, got me researching and well I took the plunge.
Why No Poo?
dandruff/dry scalp
I just knew intuitively that this could really help my scalp heal and it did!
I was using Lush shampoo bars, which were probably way too drying for my scalp, but they just smelt so good!
Why Start?
Which started out in the pandemic situation, isolation was a perfect time to try this.
The process of No Poo method
Started 8 weeks ago now, look at my hair :)
Getting used to not washing my hair, no pretty smell, no relief from grease!
First 2 weeks were grose
Of course any questions, feel free to comment below!
It was greasy for about a month, 4 - 5 weeks.
Do not use Baking Soda! It can damage your hair, it is way too strong.
Relief from the grease
So finally now as you can see, when I wash my hair with just water, it is actually clean.
Still smells like hair but its not greasy and its not itchy and its not flakey!
It can also help your skin if you need to detox from products too.
How to No Poo?
Very simple, try to not wash your hair, I would wash my hair with water in the shower, maybe 2 - 3 times a week at first.
It will be weird to wash your hair with no shampoo
I also make hair rinses, where I boil rosemary or mint for 20 mins and sieve it into a jar, that I keep by the shower, but use it within a few days if you live in a hot climate
Hair rinses, there’s a few online if you research it, rosemary is known for stimulating the scalp and promotes hair growth. There’s a few rinses you can make but make sure you don’t use baking soda in it.
Relief from this mental game we are played by Advertising and Haircare companies.
I know we’re not animals but I don’t see bears out in the wild needing to shampoo and condition their hair! And they live in nature 24/7.
Once the greasiness ended, my mind was blown. That my hair could keep itself healthy, without the use of condition or a hair mask.
That my scalp could have relief from dandruff/ dry scalp, from just water washing rather than adding more chemicals onto my scalp!
Will I continue to No Poo?
Yes!
Although I had a dream last night that I would use shampoo and I felt disappointed about this choice and this time I wasted not using shampoo, haha maybe it was a sign? To keep no pooing. Ha
Would I recommend No Poo?
YES!
Obviously, everyone is different, I didn’t change my diet or much else so I do think personally it worked for me but obviously you may have a different experience.

Hi, Nano! I've been looking for someone who has mixed Asian hair like me, and I was so happy to find you! You really inspired me to try this out! :) Thank you for making this video about your experiences!

Hey no worries :) It's defintely worth a try, I shampoo with Weleda organic shampoo about once a week now. My hair is so much softer since I did no poo for a couple of months, it's also got so much more volume and its really healthy. When the dandruff or itch comes though, I just water wash it :)

I'm also half Asian half white. I have naturally curly hair which disguises the greasiness pretty well. I'm two weeks into the no-poo method myself and want to eventually get to water only. I tried it's few years ago and gave up but this time I'm planning on just spacing out the shampoos more and more. My scalp has been extremely irritated recently, lots of dandruff and itchiness to the point it would be bleeding. I bought some sulfate free gentle shampoo that I plan to use just once in a while. In the past I used more natural shampoos but I stopped because it was so expensive, plus my hair is very long (down to my waist) and pretty thick. So switching to just normal dandruff shampoo....has left my scalp in pretty bad condition now. I have been having to put aloe gel, tea tree oil and olive oil on my scalp just to get relief and washing with just water isn't working to get it out but my scalp at the moment already feels a lot better. My hair feels like it's coated in wax though which isn't a pleasant feeling. I'm hoping once I can get my scalp under control and maybe get to water only washing at some point things will be a lot better. One thing so far that has surprised me is after washing my hair in just water, my ends have been super frizzy and dry. I'm hoping that will eventually get better too. Thank you for this video!

Hi Michelle, thanks for your comment. Everyone is so different and so is their hair, your hair being long makes it an added extra too. Weirdly my dandruff is back, this winter and I haven’t been washing with shampoo weekly, like I did last year. So I’m going to look into certain ingredients to help dandruff, as the scratching is so annoying and the flaking is even more so 😆 pyrithione zinc is recommended by Dr Shereene Idriss, she’s a certified dermatologist from New York. I found Vanicream Z-bar which looks nice on iherb, but I just placed an order a few weeks ago already 😆 so might try to find something at the drug store in Japan. I’ll see if I buy a product to target my dandruff and see if it helps. I never found head and shoulders to help in the past, just made my scalp super greasy but my dandruff is worse than it’s been 😅 saying that I still water wash, I’ve shampooed about 3 times in the past year (at a fancy hotel with lovely smelling products, I couldn’t resist) my hair is way healthier, straighter, less frizzy and more volume. Just dandruff is an issue now and oh getting a few white hairs 😄

@@NanoYoga I think the indoor heating dries out my skin and causes a cascade of problems, but I also think I might be allergic to some of the chemicals in the cheaper shampoos. I'm going to try using a humidifier regularly when the heat is on and seeing if that helps too. Good luck getting things back to normal! I also have a few gray hairs but I think they are pretty and I'm interested in seeing how they look when they grow long, maybe will have a few pretty streaks that bring out the curl. I used to dye my hair a lot when I was younger but now want to just be more natural.

@@NanoYoga oh also, I agree on not recommending baking soda. I tried it q few years ago and didn't like it at all. It left my hair feeling both not clean and also very dried out and more fragile. I bet if I did it more than once it would have damaged it a lot. I've heard it has a pretty high pH which is worse than regular shampoo for our hair.

Hi! There's a few DIY shampoos with essential oils you can use, but I haven't got all the ingredient available here in Japan. I've noticed that my hair goes through cycles, sometimes it is for sure more greasy or smells a little. Luckily I don't really hang around with people daily, so I can get away with it. I'd like water wash your hair a little more often.

ive used head and shoulders pretty much all my life, i didnt really have dandruff except when i didnt wash regularly. i stopped using shampoo around 2 months ago, just washed with water, i got the worse dandruff ever, very greasy too, kept with it, dry itchy scalp now gone and so it dandruff. it does get oily after maybe 3 days, but a quick wash and dry and its all good. i was hoping i might get some hair growth, but not sure thats happened 😁

Hi Scott, think that not using shampoo works so differently for each person. My dandruff got worse, maybe because I've been in cooler and winter weather. I'm using a dandruff type shampoo in Japan, about once a week, to keep the flake and itch at bay. Water wasn't quite helping my dandruff in the end

Yep same ish for me, I've been shampooing now it's winter, due to kerosene heaters, made my hair smell like fuel and the cold mountain air, has also made my scalp more dry, and dandruff. Do you water wash your hair? With dandruff it can be your diet or your outside environment!

Hello, when I did no shampoo during 2020, I didn't wash my hair at all, but then I started water washing it. I can't quite remember how often exactly, I'd say twice a week or 3. Depending on if I went swimming at the lake or the ocean. Or if my scalp was really itchy, unfortunately my dandruff got worse eventually, so I back on dandruff shampoo now about twice a week, depends on how itchy my scalp is. Hope your no poo journey goes well.

Hey! I was away, hence the late reply :) How many weeks have you tried No Poo for? It took over 6 weeks for my hair to feel less greasy. I did get a very greasy, itchy scalp and bad dandruff about 3 - 5 weeks in. I also wanted to give up, but I wanted to do this, as I didn't want to have a eye rash in the humid summers of Japan (which I didn't get). Also I reckon that it depends on your environment, the water you use to wash your hair, your hormones, stress levels and diet too. I

@@silverfullbuster9177 I follow Dr Shereen Idris on insta, she doesn't recommend scrubs for the face as its too harsh, so I wonder if she'd also say the same as she's a dermatologist. I've never tried that but I've heard that coconut or extra virgin olive oil as a scalp mask is good but I've done that in the past and it creates a greasy mess. So I'm avoiding as I'm still avoiding shampoo. Unfortunately my eye rash has been back but it could be due to the change in seasons, but I didn't have it all summer which is a score. Hey I've been trying no poo method but I'm not facing greasiness although I'm in 2nd week can u please explain me why is it happening?
@NanoYoga
@NanoYoga 3 года назад
Hey hey, it's completely natural and honestly it gets better after this, HOLD ON! After the 3rd - 4th week, it was less of a greasy mess for me. Your hair's sebum, the natural hair oil, is recovering from you stripping the natural hair oils away, from I'm guessing a lifetime of using shampoo. It helped to massage the scalp, and also to use your fingers to run them through your hair, so the oil, is distributed to the ends of your hair. My hair is somewhat always a little greasy, but nobody has ever commented on this. It's also so so much healthier, since all the damage from bleaching and dying years ago. It's also definitely improved my dandruff, but hasn't fully got rid of it either.

I tried salt rinse, lemon juice - now just starting back up, ill be using apple cider vinegar rinses, first one as of wash one - ill be welcoming my natural beach curls back and volume!
