Yes it does work, it's been over a year for me. I'm s guy with shoulder length hair. After a week or two your hair will produce the natural amount of grease and it won't look greasy

Oh I will say I do use lavender oil in my hair to give off a good smell and it also helps with ticks in the summer. Couple of girls and guys have enjoyed it lol

The first 3 weeks is oily but then amazing. 3 to 6 months to totally transition.

I love this series! When I finished college in the US I spent the summer working for the Forest Service and did no poo sort of on accident. We only bathed in rivers and lakes so I just rinsed my hair in the water and didn't do anything else. Obviously, it didn't matter what I looked like, but when I finished the summer, my hair was amazing. I think going totally no poo will work great for you--we seem to have similar hair texture/wave. The only thing that has kept me from going back to it is the chemicals in our water. I've considered getting a filter for the shower head--do you think you have any issues with buildup from your water? xoxo

Keep it up! Your hair is beautiful. I've been water-only for two years now. I also went no-soap two years ago, so I really only use water when I take my showers and only wash my hair (only with water) when it starts to feel itchy, maybe every four to seven days (although there are days when I need to do it the next day because I didn't massage my scalp well enough or brush my hair), so you should be flexible on that. I produce a lot of oil and my transition period took a good three months. I thought it would never get better. But after about three months it wasn't as bad and I also learned to accept that my hair was a bit different from the "silky smooth" hair that others have because of shampoo. As for the no-soap, that was the easiest transition ever. I just stopped one day and I didn't really notice a difference. I will still use a natural soap for serious things, like gasoline on my hands from pumping gas, but that's rare. It's really nice to see other people doing this. I only know of one other person who does water-only.

Really great video thank you!! I've been doing a lot of research on no poo water only method as I started it last week and I've read that if you have hard water in your shower not only can it cause dry and damaged hair over time but it can cause a build up on the hair which can cause that waxy feeling. (I have hard water in my shower) There's a few ways to get rid of it but one way is by doing an ACV rinse at the end of your shower and do not rinse it out after. Hope this helps any one who may be running into that problem while doing the water only method

I went from low poo dreads to no poo short hair. I seem to have the opposite problem where my hair is frizzy and I need to use coconut oil and sugar (apple "honey") to keep my hair in a reasonable shape. I've always had frizzy hair but I hoped the problem would diminish with the water only washing. I also only use water on my son's hair (18 months) and he needs coconut oil in order not to frizz. The both of us wash our hair twice a week. What I do notice with his hair is that he only needs the extra oil when we preen him but not if he only gets his hair wet.

I think it'll be helpful if I do a Q&A at some point on no poo so leave your questions down below!

Madeleine Olivia ..I don't have a question really bc I'm already water only :D.. good luck with the transition :) it'll be worth it. I'm still going strong. my hair is still oily but it's not bad.. the beginning was crazy lol I just put it in a ponytail (when my hair was dry)... anyways. have fun.. good luck :) I'm so excited for you.. you can do it!!!

and I don't use anything to make my hair "smell nice" you will notice along the way.. your hair smells nice sometimes... unless you go around people who smoke.... also I wash my hair when I feel like.. I keep track on a calender... I was baking soda only and I cleaned my hair once a week on the dot.. now its twice or three times a week.. I heard that you're supposed to water only every day.. I did that at the start... my hair hated me lol .. but that's for my hair..

Does it help with split end prone hair? I commented that my hair splits easily and Im very cautious about what styles I use. I don't use heat either and condition twice a week, when Im washing my hair. Does no poo help prevent them? Does anyone have experience, if you read this in the video? Thanks in advance!
@ladyluna7328
@ladyluna7328 7 лет назад
Emily I know you didn't ask me that question but with my hair.. I have split ends still currently.. I don't go and get my hair cut like "normal" but I do cut off my own split ends.. it might help to get a cut before you start with water only.. it will probably help with that.. your oils will go down the shaft of your hair better and oil your ends ... instead of commercial oils..

The best thing you can do about the oily scalp is really put some elbow grease in and sort of like, massage it in circular motions when you're "washing" it

What I do is brush my hair before I get in the shower, start the shower with hot water and massage my scalp while running my fingers from the roots to the ends, continue my shower and end my shower with cold water while repeating the head massage and finger run through. It's been 3 and a half weeks since I've used shampoo and it's working super well.. I wish I had a wooden brush though! Sometimes I do use a comb to run through my hair while in the shower... bad I know. To moisturize my scalp, I use coconut oil, water and essential oil in a spray bottle and spray it on while I'm continuing my shower and then instead of cold water, I'll finish the shower with warm water while running that coconut oil mixture through to the ends. No oily end result surprisingly.

Kat Snow if you have a bathtub definitely take a bath and completely submerge your hair for about half an hour if that works for you. If you don’t have a bathtub you could fill up a pot and just lay down with only the ends inside the hot water.

Everything you’ve said is exactly what I am going through ! The question I was personally thinking is it ok to water your hair every day to drag down the oils no shampoo ? (also thanks for the hand method !) I’ve never thought of that

I'm on day 18 and washing every day with lukewarm water and low poo on the 4th day. There has been some improvements but I am still pretty greasy on days 2-3 after low poo. I am torn between continuing this and going to progressively longer intervals OR just doing water only every day. Do you think going water only speeds things up?
@BonesofStarlight

To anyone who wishes to do this, it can work, it worked for me, however it does reset if you dye your hair like I do every six weeks. So if you don't dye your hair, and it's anything like mine (because that's all I can speak for) which is neither dry nor oily and needs washing every 3-5 days, it could work for you. It takes 6 weeks to see a difference, though. I couldn't keep it up because of my hair dye.

I've been using baking soda and vinegar for almost 4 months. I really don't want to return using shampoo but what can I do for itching? I want to use water only but I'm not sure because of that itching. Did you experience hair loss during that process? Whenever I put my hand into my head, there is always some hair and that discourages me so much. Thank you for your valuable sharings. Take care😊

I've been going no-poo-water-only for almost 2 months, but low-poo for about a year before that. I live in a tropical country and my hair didn't smell too bad in the first month of no poo. But I went to France for 10 days and somehow my hair smelled weird. I don't know if I was drinking too much onion soup or something but when I got home I had to wash my hair with shampoo because the smell was too yucky! Anyway I'm back to water-only and my scalp seems to be producing less oil (FINALLY!!)! I'm still observing. It varies each day. My hair still feels kinda sticky and heavy nearer the scalp but it's softer. Can't wait for the transition to be over. Good luck to you!

The hair is probably greasy on top more because that is where you used to put the most shampoo. A lot of people put the most shampoo on top and don’t flip it to do the bottom, so the bottom of your head has probably been natural for years while the top is damaged.

I know plenty of people who do not use shampoo. you need a nylon or plastic bristle brush that mimics a boar bristle brush. your wooden one's bristles are too care apart. when you take a shower, scrub your head and hair just like you were shampooing. do this twice then rinse thoroughly. style as usual. you can do this everyday if you want. the stimulation from the act of shampooing will be enough. your bristle brush with distribute your oils through your hair between washing. and it's ok to use a bit of baking soda mixed with cocoa powder( for your dark hair) to use as a dry shampoo to freshen it up when it starts to look too oily and you can distribute that too through your hair with the nylon bristle brush.
@MadeleineOlivia
@MadeleineOlivia 7 лет назад
What I've been told though is that you need a natural material like wood because synthetic material brushes won't pick up the oil? Thank you for all of your advice it's super helpful!
@callmeswivelhips8229
@callmeswivelhips8229 7 лет назад
I use a wooden brush, and it's works very well for me. I definitely prefer it over boar bristle and nylon brushes. The wood pulls my oil through the most effetively of all them all, and it doesn't damage my hair as much either!

If I have really dry damaged hair could I start my WOM with coating my hair with oils before washing because I'm worried my hair will just get much drier? And also is it possible to do a deep condition with oils and honey before washing only with water?

i have my head shaved and have had it shaved for almost two months now, but i've still been washing my hair with shampoo and conditioner and after watching your no poo videos it made me think and realize "why am i washing my hair? my hair's basically reset, i can do no poo." i do need to do a form of scritching and preening, though. i'll just kind of massage my scalp, i suppose. also, even back when i shaved my head for the first time a couple of years ago, i cleaned my hair with shampoo and conditioner! i feel like that does't make /any/ sense

After over two years of no 'poo, my experience has been that I need to start washing with water more than once every week or two. The major problem is the build up, of sebum and skin, creating that waxy grey residue in my brush. I'm going to try twice a week for a little while and see how that does to improve the situation. I buzzed all my hair off about a month and a half ago for a few reasons, one of which is to grow out completely virgin hair. At this time, I do not intend to cut my hair ever again. We shall see how long that lasts. I want my long, gorgeous curls back. 😊 Have you tried finishing off your scalp with cool water to calm the scalp response to all the massaging? It really helped slow the oil production for me.

Paused right around 7:30 because you are talking about the "tacky" feeling your hair kind of has. I've actually seen another water only youtuber (don't remember who...this was ages ago) whose hair kinda did the same thing. So she said her hair didn't look "dirty" so much and it just looked more like she'd put hair products in it like anyone would. Also for just water washing yesterday, if I were to have run into you today there's no way I would have known that you hadn't used any kind of soap on your hair in almost 2 weeks. I'm pretty sure the fact that you started as "low poo" has helped your hair transition so hopefully going water only will be smooth sailing for you! Best wishes!

my hair feels really clean underneath at the back too! I've been low poo for a few weeks and went water only after doing a final clarifying wash- my hair was horrible from silicones in my old conditioner. think I need to scritch and preen more though before brushing by the sound of it. I'm trying to leave my hair a week between washes but I'm going to transition to that and at the moment I'm washing with water only every 4 days :-)

My hair gets greasy in the back at my nape. That's where most of my sebum comes in. If I don't wash my hair with my head inverted, the hair at my forehead actually dries out.

I'm currently one year two months low poo. My technique right now is to wash my hair once a month with shampoo. As a result my hair is silky smooth and soft. i am considering switching to baking soda white vinegar rinses instead of shampoo. not sure. good luck

@callmeswivelhips8229 7 лет назад
Make sure to be consistent with how your portion the baking soda and vinegar with water. If you don't balance the pH correctly, it can damage your hair. As long as it's balanced well, and you rinse out the baking soda well enough, it definitely works for a low poo method.

Laura S. I only cut my hair once a year, so I can justify making a trip to an all natural hairstylist. They only use environmentally friendly hair products like vinegar, baking soda, flower essence, and usually do the hot cold method for better results when cleaning. If that’s too much of a hassle, I would suggest doing your cleaning routine before you go and once you’re there tell them they’re only allowed to use water and no product. Sometimes it’s less awkward if you do this through a call instead of when you get there.

I'm really excited for you, your hair looks beautiful to me! You definitely have some greatly defined body waves, it's AMAZING! Your sebum production will slowly adjust to not produce as much. Have you tried inverting your head when you scritch & preen, or when your washing it in the shower? That's what I do, and I find I get my sebum down to my heads more effectively that way. But my sebum is concentrated at the nape of my neck, so. But try doing it from a bunch of different angles! My hair doesn't feel waxy or tacky to me, but it did at first. I went water only back in April, and it felt a little waxy for a month-ish? Then I tried using honey mixed with water and a couple spices as shampoo/conditioner. But I've went back to water only for about a month now, and my hair just feels soft now, no waxy/tackiness. So that will probably go away for you too. I imagine it's connected to the kinds of fat you eat, and how much. I eat a ketogenic diet, so I eat a lot of fat. If your hair is feeling dehydrated and dry, washing more often will help. It needs to be "watered". Otherwise, once a week is plenty. People with kinky hair need more frequent wwashing to get their sebum production up (their coils absorb a lot more oil than our wavy hair does).

Check out the vitagoods scalp massager. $20 off amazon. Water proof, so you can use it in the shower, and it vibrates. It can really help to massage the scalp, and loosen the dirt and sebum for scritching and preening. Really saves the elbow grease. I'm actually thinking of getting a 2nd one myself, so I can do both sides of my head at once in the shower.

Oh my gosh your comments are so helpful thank you so much! Definitely considering buying this contraption! I'm happy to hear the waxiness went away for you, as this is the main issue for me currently. But I know it will go away as I can tell that there is oil build up. In fact since I made this video it is already less waxy. I am definitely going to try inverting my head more when showering/preening etc. I eat a very low fat vegan diet so I would imagine this will help in a lot of ways? Do you think washing every 5 days or so is too much? I've heard mixed comments on whether to wash it more or whether to wash it less, but this is probably to do with the texture of a persons hair. I washed my hair on Friday which was 5 days after I had last washed it as I felt it needed it.
@callmeswivelhips8229
@callmeswivelhips8229 7 лет назад
Just wash when you feel you need it. The amount of washing your hair needs will probably change as your scalp adjusts to water only anyway, so you can only really play it by ear at this point. A more consistent and even schedule won't appear for you until your scalp and hair has finished transitioning. I know it sucks, but that's how it works. In my experience, it needs more washing when you first transition, as your hair is repairing damage caused by the chemicals you were using before. That's my current theory anyway.
@callmeswivelhips8229
@callmeswivelhips8229 7 лет назад
I might actually suggest upping your fat intake just a bit. At least during transition. That might help your scalp adjust the sebum production faster. Just so it has access to enough sebum substrates, you know?

Your hair looks incredible today! It looks shiny and healthy. It takes a while to get used to the change in the texture, doesn't it? LOL! That was the part that seemed most bizarre to me.
@MadeleineOlivia
@MadeleineOlivia 7 лет назад
Thanks Adria! Does it always stay this texture? Does it ever have that silky soft feeling again or no?
@AF-ke9by
@AF-ke9by 7 лет назад
Madeleine Olivia It does, but the soft is different than it used to be... it's a moisture-rich soft, if that makes sense? I find my hair has more resiliency and body now, but water only definitely requires warm water a couple of times per week for me. My body just produces sebum more than other people's.
@callmeswivelhips8229
@callmeswivelhips8229 7 лет назад
My hair is soft now. I find the texture you hair has will change as you get into it. Use a silk beanie for night time, or just a silk pillowcase. That will help your hair feel even more soft!

I would love to go completely no poo (water only) but after one week of using natural shampoo, my scalp starts itching terribly. Do you know why that is?
@Jozefienvc
@Jozefienvc 5 лет назад
Hi, I just read your question and I think I can help. I wash my hair with a shampoo bar that has only natural ingredients in it. I use an apple cider vinegar rinse after that. I think you could benefit from it too. I put some organic apple cider vinegar in a large bowl, I fill it up with water and I poor it over my hair. Then rinse with water. The effect is that your scalp restores to its natural pH-value.

Does no poo help with preventing split ends? I don't use heat or style my hair in any way besides a simple braid or french braid once or twice a week. I condition every time I wash my hair- which is twice a week. (That sounds gross to some people, but it doesn't get greasy until day 3-4 so its not worth it to wash it) My hair tends to split so easily somehow and Im trying to find a way to prevent them. :) I recently cut my hair to get rid of some damage, but I don't want that damage again! D: Anyone have experience with split end prevention and no shampoo? Did it help you?
@callmeswivelhips8229
@callmeswivelhips8229 7 лет назад
I haven't had a hair cut in a year, and I have very few split ends. I'm also no poo. So this may be a solution for you! When you stop using man made chemicals, you hair gets stronger as a result me thinks. Also, try switching out your pillowcase for a silk or satin (not sateen) pillowcase instead, or just get a silk beanie of some sort to contain your hair at night. Cotton and other rough fibers can cause split ends and other forms of damage with friction. Silk prevents this, and encourages your hair to feel just as silky smooth!
@lilybean3533
@lilybean3533 7 лет назад
Emily you could be getting split ends from not using the right scissors. if they aren't super sharp and fine it could split your hair while cutting of your split ends. with my experience of water only, I started out treating my hair harshly in the shower in order to get out the oils: scrubbing hair, brushing when wet, pulling fingers through knots.. this are the things that split your ends. I had to learn patience when taking care of my hair with water only, because it's a long process.. so water only is probable the best things for your ends if your doing the process gently and nourishing your ends with your oils and even coconut oil (good to keep your ends from getting dry if your hair is too long to pull all the sebum down to the bottom)

Thank you for the lovely update, i really enjoy watching your videos :) I'm doing no poo for 2 months now. Haven't washed my hair in 1.5 weeks and it looks amazing still. I occasionally use a tiny bit of Lush dry shampoo. What I find is that my hair feels a bit waxy for the first two days after washing and after that it feels like I have washed it with shampoo (seems like the remaining oils get soaked up). Also, I use a shit ton of coconut oil at the moment and on a daily basis (maybe it's because of the cold and dry weather). But I feel like my hair totaly absorbs all the oils over night. I also like to massage my scalp with natural peppermint oil once a week. I might have to add that I have really thick hair. So far I enjoy the look and I don't use any styling tools anymore. I was a bit reluctant at first but no poo really gave me the "perfect hair" look almost every day :) yay! Enough of me. Thanks for sharing. Have a good day

Yes I am having this exact experience! My hair today is cleaner than it was the day I washed it! You can see if you compare this video to my 'why I don't wear underwear' video how much cleaner and softer my hair looks. Definitely going to try the peppermint oil trick as I'm sure this makes your hair smell incredible!

Not in my experience. It's not shampoo and conditioner thats keeps your hair smelling neutral to pleasant, though they definitely impart a scent. It's washing it regularly with water.

You know, this video is kind of disappointing. You see, I'm a huge coprophobe ("fear" of feces) and I was thinking this video was going to teach me how not to defecate (which is a daily nightmare for me). Okay, to clarify, coprophobia is not the same thing as, say, arachnophobia. That is, I fear it's going to attack me. It's more like a very strong revulsion. The sight, smell, or even just the thought of it makes me physically ill. Having to deal with it (like cleaning up after a dog) is absolutely horrifying. Of course using the toilet is pretty bad, especially non-flush toilets (out house or port-a-potty) I would literally give anything to have some way to eliminate defecation from my life. Changing a baby's diaper is one the hardest things I might have to do. I can do it (sometimes), but it's not easy, especially if it's the really soft kind.
