Great video Sissi, I think it's a real benefit to highlight the frustrations of the limitations we all experience. I have a constant 'hunger' to go out shooting, and I can't always do that. I try to remind myself of the 'successes' I've had through the year and I think... in a strange way, it keeps everything 'fresh' - and I then don't take photography for granted. More of these please.
this is such a great video!! i really like how reflection seems to be such a big part of photography for you. it sounds like it gives more meaning to your work future and present
Great video! I love how limiting yourself can actually expand your creative limits in a way, making you think outside the box. A couple challenges Ive been thinking of implementing myself are only shoot with panoramic mode on in camera, or to only use my 135mm lens for a month...
You’re so right! I did expand my creativity after limiting it in a way. I did many projects in May, and I think that I approached them very differently like I wouldn’t have before if without doing this challenge! 🤗
Such a difficult challenge for someone who thrives off of portraits like yourself! Super cool observations that you made from doing this tho! Can't wait to see the next video!
These are very fun challenges. I'm currently working on the black and white film challenge. I'm glad I found your channel. It's been a huge support for my own amateur photography journey.
I feel like I would have given in and taken some photos I wanted if there were moments I didn’t want to miss and then just gotten back on track with the challenge - like having a “cheat” meal while on a diet to make it more sustainable.
LOL what an intro. It's great to force ourselves to see a different perspective. That's how you grow. Although I wish you snuck a photo of the kid on the bus. That was gold.
Love it! My thoughts on including your own story in phorographs: I think it's inevitable that we appear in our photographs, the things we're attracted to speak a lot about who we are as people. I've realised things about myself from looking at my own photos (portraits and not portraits), and discovering myself within my photos has helped me make better photos. In my opinion you're already writing the story in your photos so keep photographing what you want!
We are so biased in our own work, aren’t we 😅 Yes, I agree. Once we had some time after creating the photos, it’s easier to detach our personal feelings from them. It’s also so helpful, at least for me, to go back and analysis my past works.
Hi Sissi, I think this is an excellent video. In fact, it’s excellent in many ways. I think you hit the nail on the head by meditating on what you think your shortcomings are as a photographer. I look at my contemporaries and modern inspirations and think about how they defined their style. The conclusions I came to was that their work is perhaps a combination of many things they have been inspired by. It’s difficult to look at our own work, I think, and see those inspirations until we receive some sort of critique. It’s really hard sometimes to get out of that headspace and the only way through like your friend Kevin says, is to surf on those waves. Be good and be easy ✌🏾
Thank you, San! We are so biased in our own works. I find it helpful to share my work to the public and hearing people’s critiques help me identify my own works sometimes.
I still have problems working portraits on street photography... It has become hard to get that spontaneous moment when people and background click and tell the story of what is happening, most people act skittish around a guy just there looking around...
Hi. Your story on this episode really resonated with me. As an artist who turned to photography as a means of expression, I often find myself feeling what I didn’t know was that imposter syndrome. But I knew photography was my next phase in evolving as an artist (although it took me quite sometime to even call myself a photographer lol) idk if you ever shoot around with photogs who don’t shoot film or portraits like myself, I’d love to shoot around with you in the city sometime. I love watching other people work and learn from them. I love shooting different things so often times photographer friends of mine say my curiosity in discovering & learning who Iam as an artist & photog sometimes gives them inspiration. Maybe bc I’m thinking more like an artist than a photographer allowing myself to feel something when I want to shoot it. Or if you’d like to see any of my work I can share my IG/web link. Keep up the great work Sissi! 📸👓 - j
Another great video and please keep doing this series This being said, and just as a constructive criticism, because this video was awesome too, I think the last month one format was even better Not only was it about the challenge, was almost a squeezed vlog of your month, focused on photography and how the challenge progressed But like I said, another excellent video as always
Thank you for watching both of the videos! Each month’s format is going to be different based on how I’m feeling at the end of month. Haha the next one is going to be almost completely vlog based 🤗
Funny how it's the opposite with me: I don't think I'm confident enough to take portraits atm. My film photos are mostly wide angle shots of streets. I do take portraits of my family and friends but I'm not comfortable posting anything personal on instagram just yet. Now this makes me think I should go and take portraits for a change. 😁
