Gibson R9 straight into a Friedman Pink Taco and Friedman 2x12 with V30s. No pedals. Recorded at low 'Dont Disturb The Neighbors' volume with an iPhone sitting on top of the amp.
It seems Page had an approach on free jazz when it comes to live solo. Even when he had not mention this like an influence, maybe that just was the spirit of the age.
Holy mother of god. I have listened to this guitar solo more times than I could ever hope to count. Like in the hundreds of times. And while I can’t really play guitar (I’m a drummer), I have memorized every single note of this solo in my mind. Every nuance, every dynamic, how he strikes or plucks or strums the strings. Dude. You did this as close to perfect as I could ever imagine someone doing it. Again, I’m a drummer. So I can very much tell how Page’s timing in what he plays is unconventional to say the least. Some call it a sloppy sound. I think it’s just a completely different way of looking at timing. But it is something that I cannot imagine is easy at all to emulate. Probably goes against all your muscle memory, like when a drummer first starts learning to play reggae. So I am just in total awe of how well you did this. You clearly listened to this solo just as intently as I always have. You didn’t miss a thing. It’s honestly comforting to know others out there (especially those who can actually play) get as deeply engaged as I do. It can feel lonely sometimes when you can just tell how few people really dig into those individual notes and contemplate them and live in them. So beyond being in awe, I’m thankful. Thank you. Wondering what some of your other favorite solos are. I’be listened to this one so much. But there are a few others: - Santana’s “Baila Mi Hermana” live at CalJam (can also be found on disc 2 of Viva Santana) - Band of Gypsies’ “Machine Gun” - Dire Straits’ “Once Upon A Time in the West” off live Alchemy You gained a subscriber through your cover of this. Man, I’d love to see what you do with those!
I enjoyed your post. This solo is singled out in Page's canon of live work (and studio) as NOT being sloppy. Separate that, my own belief is that Page's live sloppiness is due 95% percent of the time to alcohol.
Youre not alone. Im a drummer since 1977, yet due to health reasons-physical-and no longer play drums. So, I took up guitar and acquired some good quality gear-Marshall, 1960 Gibson LP, a 1958 Tele and some other Fender/Vox gear. Chasing that Page tone.
@@allancerf9038 I've met many guitarists over the years, and many have said that, "Jimmy Page was a, 'sloppy-fingered drunk'". My response is always, "Yes. And don't you wish you were so sloppy."
I'm sitting here slack-jawed... This is one of the best things I have seen on RU-vid. I have loved this song, and this solo, since the 70s. I have never even tried to play it (I am a guitarist and could play the notes, but not the solo); it is sacrosanct. But you have nailed it. Kudos to you, sir! I am in awe of your achievement. Everything about it is perfect.
It's definitely quintessential Jimmy Page live. I just think this guy doing it is amazing, and it's wonderful that he's showing people how Jimmy did it
Page created so much great guitar, he truly is the man, you can throw gilmour and Clapton in there with him as the best but i think Jimmy really went in so many different directions and recorded the most unique and diverse tracks that he shines a bit more then all others.
In my opinion Clapton was like mathematically precise on the guitar, but he was kind of boring to watch. Jimmy had a sense of showmanship and stagecraft, and the real prodigy talent to back it up!
Man, that is world class. Note for note, plus tactile perfection. You could play that with no amplifier, along with the song, and your playing is superb. Whew!
Thank you for doing this. I'm awestruck. It's my favorite song and solo of all time. I can't believe it was covered so perfectly. It's astonishing! You literally deserve an award for best cover in my opinion.
@@chippchipp1 Definitely sounds Dorian to me. A great channel on RU-vid is SignalsMusicstudio. "Jake" goes into a lot of discussion about modal tonalities.
I'm no guitarist and that's why I'm in such all of people who can play the instrument like this guy does. I always wondered how Jimmy played it cuz you know it was a fantasy sequence when it was played on The song remains the same movie
Wow, I always thought that the section from around 2:26 to 3:00 was some of Pages best, but to see it being played only confirms it. Outstanding, really well played. And thank you for sharing 🙂
Maybe the most impressive thing about your cover is that your guitar tone is clean. It seems like everyone who tries to copy Page (including me) goes for too much distortion. Page's tone was actually pretty clean and obviously you understand that. Fantastic job!
Dude I know it’s three years ago but you nailed that solo al the little nuances and even the little (I shouldn’t say cause he’s my favorite guitar player ) sloppy stuff that jimmy had gives it so much soul. He probably improvised that solo that night. Perfect example of blues in the Dorian mode. Send me the tab please!!!
Huge depth. Intricacies, harmonies, complex and foreboding, incredibly moving. Hard to put to words. Excellent work. You pass down your observations, put forth your skills to us few, we band of Zeppelin afficinados.
Hands-down, that's the best guitar cover I've ever seen -- and I've watched thousands. I've played bits and pieces of that solo for decades, but I've struggled with it. You seemed to nail every nuance. Great job. Thanks for posting.
Amazing performance elStevobass. After 45 years of listening to some amazing players, this one solo always has been and always will be my favourite. Almost like Jimmy was channelling from some divine source. I just can't explain it.
Wow. Just wow. Always rated this live solo as an absolute screamer. Page was a genius like. TSRTS is the best live concert Iv ever heard. Musically Page is untouchable here. Some say sloppy but nothing sloppy here. Builds n builds till he switches to bridge pick up and then still gathers right unti the end, Tremendous effort here note for note.
we all need a lesson for this solo. Between this and the solos for Stairway to Heaven and Celebration Day, and frankly ALL of Dased and Confused, I'm torn between which is my favorite
I love this guitar solo so much. I can't believe how thoroughly you have learned it. Really impressive. I've always loved the gradual increase in intensity in both Page's playing and Bonham's drums as they push each other along throughout it.
Dude, I’m not worthy, that’s just amazing. NOT ONE CLAM! Holy shiiite, I’ve never heard such a hard solo covered so flawlessly. The old me would’ve wanted to cut my strings off, the more refined me is going to learn this solo by hook or by crook! You are an amazing talent and must have 20,000 hours in !
Great to hear this! Love how Page flows in and out of the Pentatonic Scale to a Minor Scale (Dorian Minor Mode in this case it appears) like he does in Since I've Been Loving You etc. One of my all time favs. You did it well. Would love to see the tab on this.
Well I have to admit to being bowled over by that. I know this solo in my head inside out and learned chunks of it way back, and I watch a lot of solo covers on RU-vid including some of the shreddier ones. But I don't think I've seen anyone come so close as this to nailing the tiny nuances of a solo, eg the pick attack and the precise feel of the bends and vibrato and especially the less well-defined parts of the original. It's not like he's playing even sextuplets at any point like some shredder. Bloody well done.
Even if I could do it as well as this guy or Jimmy Page or Hendrix or whoever I think I would still love it even if I could do it you know what I mean?
madre de dios pensé que a mi edad no vería algo tan igual...para aquellos necios que critican a jimmi. gracias amigo...un viejo rokero..de los de aquella época...te agradezco 🙏
I know this solo so well in my head, one of my all-time favourites since TSRTS was released. That is staggeringly accurate, and I speak as someone who has transcribed big band tunes in full.. Hats off to you sir.
This is the original version of "No Quarter" from the 1976 release of the album. That was amazing and one of best live guitar solos ever - in the history of rock and roll. Not sure why you stopped - there was a bit more to go - w all that funky interplay. 😢
Are used to see the song remains the same down at the Sunny Isle movie theater down in North Miami Beach in the late 70s at the midnight movie when this movie was all the rage. You can get a contact buzz just walking in the place. That was one of my most favorite parts of the movie right there, I don’t know about you but that was some mighty fine guitar playing and deserves a generous hat tip. Thanks for the memories… Class dismissed
Wow you really blew me away with that I mean if I didn't know better I'd swear I was listening to Jimmy on The Song Remain The Same amazing great guitar work
Huge credit to you, slowing down this video is the only reason I was able to learn this solo. By far the most articulate and easily followed on youtube.
Absolutely Brilliant, one of my favourite solo's of all time played to perfection, must have taken some time to break down, Privileged to be able to listen and observe. Thanks
