If you don't have a serger (or maybe it is broken), no problem! The serger can be a bit overrated even when it comes knits. Although having a serger is handy, your domestic sewing machine can do a pretty good job of sewing knits with the built-in knit stitches. And if you combine some of the stitches that I show you in this video, you can even resemble a serger look. Seriously is everything I know about knit stitches, I have a great presser-foot hack if you are having skipped stitches. At the end, I give you a few of my personal favourites stretch stitches and some new ways of thinking about knit seams.

Do you like sewing with knits/stretch fabric? And...If you are hesitant, what is it that stops you from starting that project with knits? Last weeks video was all about cutting knits and stretch fabric... I have 7 tips that will hopefully help you -- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-re0ZVO8VF1A.html Thank you so much for being here with me!

While all great content, the real money shot was the stretch test using fabric and stitch variety to evaluate the stretch and recovery as well as reminding of needle pairing for fabrics.

I have a serger but I like your decorative stitches better. I will use the last one and the fake flat felled will be used.

Thank you! Yes, go for it...knits are very forgiving, they really are easier than you think. Thanks for watching.

This answered several questions I've had for years about sewing stretchy fabrics... I was doing a lot of things wrong! I took several years of sewing (high school, college) but surprisingly don't remember them ever really explaining these things. We always just worked on projects with non stretch fabrics, which never really helped me out with my personal projects at home which were almost always with fabrics with moderate to heavy stretch! Thank youuuuu Oh! Do you happen to have a video talking about tension? If not, I think this would be a great topic that could help a lot of us out! :)

Thank you so much! I know, in University they did not lay out the ground work for sewing knits. And...unfortunately, I don't have a specific video talking directly about tension. I should add that to the list ! Thanks again for being here...🙏🏼

OMG you don't have to use the exact same stitches or seam finishes on every single seam in a single garment?!?! MIND BLOWN Zig zag is the only knit/stretch stitch I have tried so far. Honestly I have chickened out on making my first knit garment, a set of PJs, because these seemed confusing. Saving this video for reference! This is so tremendously helpful and you are delightful, looking forward to the t-shirt video Two questions: 1) The stretch test - when in the garment making process do you actually do that? When you have a fabric and pattern picked, but before you sew any seams? 2) Which of those stitches (and/or stitch settings?) would you recommend for activewear that's going to take a lot of use and abuse, like a rash guard or sports bathing suit?

Dear Madeline, Thank you so much for your comment and questions! Nope, you can literally do whatever seam/stitch works for your garment and the style you want to convey - this is the beauty of being your own designer of your clothes. And yes, I do actually do this... because knit stitches are SUPER hard to unpick and therefore, the stretch STITCH test on your fabric gives you a good indication on how your fabric will react to the stitch. And therefore, the stretch stitch test would be GREAT to understand what stitch would be good for your activewear. I do recommend trying a zig-zag or the Argyle (diamond) stitch (I showed a sample of how great this stitch works on power knits...like super stretachable activewear - near the end of the video). Try those and see how your fabric reacts to the seam! Hopefully this helps ♥️
