My Estate Car is not working - Sell all your Stocks and Bonds!!!
Well it's not really the 'end of the world' but I have to say, it sure is an annoyance. I bought this old ride on mower a while ago and re-worked it to become a daily driver for me to get around the property here at the lake. I use it all the time and it sure is nice not having to walk down the hill to the lake, or back up the hill too. Especially with my knees being half wore out and half not working!! LOL
The Estate Car was working great and then one day it wouldn't start. I tried everything but I couldn't get it to start and I had to walk back up the hill to the camp!! I was not happy!!! The next day it started like nothing ever happened. But then it wouldn't start again the other day and so I figured I better get it back in the shop and have a look see.
So in this video I try and diagnose why it won't start. The first thing I found was 'no spark' Hey, I figured this is going to be easy. But there I go thinking again.
At the end of the day I couldn't find anything wrong. Intermittent faults are bears to try and track down. I guess I'll have to wait until another day to chase this one. A day when the fault comes back, and it will !!
If anyone has any ideas what might be causing my Estate Car not to start please let me know in the comments. I'll be eternally grateful!!
Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoyed the video. Please 'thumbs up' me and leave me some comments. And if you haven't done so already, please consider 'subscribing' to my channel. It sure helps my videos get noticed and my channel grow.
I hope you all have a great week.

it is most likely a safety interlock switch. it's most likely the reverse safety switch or seat safety switch. either of these will kill spark when engaged, and sometimes they fail in such a way as to kill spark before it gets a chance to start.

I don’t know squat about angry pixies⚡️ but when you mentioned the key switch it dawned on me that my (reverse with blade engaged) button on mine hasn’t worked the last couple times I used it (2016 CC XT1)… so it stands out to me in my specific case! How's she goin"? So nice of you to subscribe to the channel. I hope we can exchange some ideas in the future. The no spark issue on my tractor was a real head scratcher. @user-wr3gp8hj3i

@@GrampiesWorkshop I did trace it back to the key switch, which had been nested in by mice and had at least 4 wires insulation eaten away/touching!! Before I knew how bad it was, I was able to just disconnect the top connector and run everything (which of course is the incorrect way, but a few other videos I’ve seen recommended). I’m really glad I took your advice to take the extra time to make sure I find the actual fault and fix correctly! That's frustrating. It's been suggested to replace the wire to the ignition switch. That is a good idea. The old Sears had one wire running to each safety. the safety just grounded the wire if there was a fault. Can you have a test light in the boot and ping the connections if it fails.
@GrampiesWorkshop
@GrampiesWorkshop Год назад
How's she goin'? That's a good trouble shooting technique for sure. Right now the engine starts and runs great!! But the next time it fails, and it will, I'll try some more trouble shooting like you mentioned. I'm leaning towards a bad ground. Like you say, most of the grounds are done to the body and frame and those connections are prone to rust and high resistance over time. Take 'er easy!!!
@OldSneelock

@@OldSneelock Hey there Dave!! The only safety left is the brake on switch and it seems to be OK. If the kill wire gets grounded the engine stops. That's the way this one is set up. I expect this is a normal set up. I will be checking into the ground on the ignition switch next. Take care!!

Check Manuel for all the safety switches: parking brake,seat,pto engaged,start switch(spray lube in key hole). Those micro-switches get dirty and hang up, also the levers that push against the switches can be miss-aligned. Best wishes, hang in there!

Or another idea Mike if it’s possible….disconnect the ground wire at the coil….and install another temporary ground wire…even with a temporary switch if you wanted…to ground out the coil when you want to shut it off. First..I must say I had a problem with the ignition switch on my similar “estate car”, Thought it would be simple to install a generic switch from Princess Auto. No!! When I got into the wiring it was craziness. Not just a simple off, run, and start with a feed. Had to be at least 7 or 8 wires for the stupid thing. Anyways, you might try eliminating the ignition switch from the equation by making up some jumpers?? And use it for a few days….or weeks like a hot wired “stolen estate car”…to see how it works?? 👍👍👍

Interesting one Mike. Bad connection at the plugin or bad switch but where does the switch get its ground to kill the coil , that's where I'd look next if it doesn't start again.
@GrampiesWorkshop
@GrampiesWorkshop Год назад
How's she goin'? That's good point Steve!! The ground for that switch goes to the chassis. And we both know what happens to those connections after a time eh!! I'll have a look at the that and see what's up!! Thanks and take 'er easy!!

Have you got a seat safety switch that kills the engine when you get off? Could be something like that.
@GrampiesWorkshop
@GrampiesWorkshop Год назад
How's she goin'? Good thought there Larry and thanks for watching by the way!! But I have the seat switch jumpered out. In fact I have a lot of the safeties disabled except for the 'brake on' switch. SInce this isn't a mowing machine any more I did away with a lot of that gear. Thanks for helping out with this though and take 'er easy!!!

After everything that you listed off, could it possibly be a bad ground connection?
@GrampiesWorkshop
@GrampiesWorkshop Год назад
Hey Gary!! Yes it very well could be a bad ground. In fact, I'm leaning that way more and more. When it fails again, and it will, I'll surely be doing an update!! Thanks for the help buddy and take care!!

How's she goin'? Thanks for dropping by the shop Alan!! Well I like the way you think, but this fault hasn't been fixed ... yet!!! It's intermittent and even though the old Estate Car is working like a Swiss Watch right now, it will come back. But I have a few ideas now, after reading though these comments, so when it does come back, I'll be ready to tackle it again!!! I'll keep you all posted on any updates. When you first cranked it over and there was no spark, you had breakfast cereal "Nut 'N Honey" I think there could be a problem with the neutral safety switch, if there is one. They are known to get sticky and wear causing intermittent starts. Or the ignition switch could be the issue. Is there a requirement to have the transmission selector in neutral or park for the tractor to turn the starter? If so, there's a neutral safety switch there somewhere.
@GrampiesWorkshop
@GrampiesWorkshop Год назад
How's she goin'? Well Craig, I was eating healthy this day because I had Nut 'N Honey on this old bird!! I was a bad boy and jumpered out all the safeties on this except for the 'brake on' switch, so the neutral sw is not the problem. I'm thinking an intermittent ignition switch, but then Steve Rob suggested maybe a bad ground at the ignition switch. I never thought of that and since the ground is made through the body, you know what can happen with those connections after a time eh!! The next time this fails, and it will, I'll be checking out the switch and grounds for sure. Stay cool and I hope the fires out there aren't anywheres close to you folks!! Take 'er easy!!

@@GrampiesWorkshop Good plan on the diagnostics. Could well be the ignition switch ground. The contacts in them wear and can cause trouble. Not as much trouble as me, but I've had more practice! Let us all know when you figure it out.

Maybe with how cheap gas is, you could just leave the kill wire unattached and having running at standby all the time. Maybe...well maybe not. I know a few weeks ago when it happened to me, the first I checked was the seat switch and it was unplugged,lol. Seems you already took care of that, other than that I am no help. But if anyone can figure it out, I'd put my money on you.

Hey there Chris. I'm on this like a dog on a bone!!! After thinking about this some more, I'm thinking the ignition switch might be intermittent. Or maybe the ground at the ignition switch is intermittent. But I like your idea of leaving it run all the time just in case I need it in a hurry!! LOL
