No Spend January Challenge. It's a new year! Time to start a no spend month challenge. In this video I share the no spend challenge rules and some tips to help us all get this year started off right. This challenge means no spending money on anything for 31 days, other than bills, groceries and gas. We can do it! What are some of your tips?
If you fall off the wagon, don't beat yourself. Just get back at it the next day. The goal is to not spend money on anything that's not a need. In addition to helping you save money or pay more towards debt, this challenge should help you build your "need vs. want" muscle.

I'm doing a no spend YEAR! My rules are similar, I get to buy groceries but not allowed to eat out. I pay my bills & for healthcare. I pay for transportation to work or other necessary places, but no leisure travels. My only exceptions are: if something breaks/wears out that I really need. For example my hair dryer is on the verge of giving up. When it does I'm allowed to buy a new one because where I live it's very cold & not very nice to step out of doors with wet hair. But if a pair of my socks wears out I could perhaps make do with the ones I already have (ie not replacing). For books & entertainment we have neither cable nor netflix but youtube & all manner of free entertainment. Most liberaries have e-books, audiobooks & even streaming movie services! For free! And podcasts & blogs. And most e-reader apps on smartphones have acess to lots of free books. I cut my own hair, learnt it from youtube videos. And it looks really professional with layers & all! I've gotten compliments from people that didn't know I had done it myself! And I've really started to cook & plan meals to avoid food waste. So far I've reduced our grocery costs from aprox $500 to $300 per month. I slipped once, when I bought something not strictly nessecary for $2. But just like you I thought ok, "just like with weight loss!" get back on track! I must say march is a difficult month... Spring feelings & all. But I'm doing it! Not sure I'll make it the whole year but at least I'll try!

Nicole Haley Well still going strong but I'll most probably fail from time to time in the coming months. Just going threw a divorce :-( wich means bying a new place of my own & perhaps new things to fit that new place... Of course a roof over my head is sort of necessary so despite being a huge cost bying a place of my own it not really breaking any no-spend-rules... The challenge lies most probably in dicerning what is strictly necessary for the new place (that I don't already have from the old place) & not getting carried away by feeling sorry for myself & wanting all new or treating myself for unnessecary things out of self pity. This is life & the pain will go away by time & in the company of loved ones, not a bunch of nick nacks. And besides, I'll really be needing the money more than ever now when on my own. Just have to remember all of this...

We are doing a no spend January! We are eating out of the pantry/freezer and I cashed in some points (PC pts) for a prepaid mastercard for buying fresh veg/fruit so no actual $$$ is getting spent on food in January.

My husband and I paid off our debt at the end of the year so we were tight on cash until I got paid on Jan 13. It was hard to try to not spend for 2 weeks. I am impressed by everyone that lasts a month.

I am doing a no spend 5 weeks starting today. So all thru Jan 2021 eating out of my packed fridge and pantry. It will keep me out of the stores too during a pandemic and that sounds great to me.

This is like every month for me. I do the same thing with amazon. Most things I never end up buying! Like the vast vast majority. And the rest I add to my Christmas list (or birthday or Mother's Day). Just recently, I found 2 books I've wanted for years at a thrift store for a dollar each!

I have purchased many "used" category books and DVDs from Amazon and find them a great buy -- at times you more or less just pay for the postage.

I do this basically every month of my life to spend as little as possible. All that I spend money on is needs, but it kinda sucks to never be able to buy something I actually want. Then when I start thinking about buying something I want the cost gives me anxiety yet I still feel bad not being able to buy things I actually want. But if I give in i would end up spending like 700 bucks.

You could set aside a certain amount for things that you really want and just buy one or two of them per month.

"Hoopla" is a great app that links to your library card. You can borrow books, Shows, movies, audiobooks, music on your devices. Free!

I do this several times a year I'm actually starting one tomorrow until September 23rd i have family coming in town on September 23rd until mid October this Will be great for me i actually just did one over the summer the next one will be the last one for 2017 then i Will start again in 2018

I'm a new sub and I wanted to add that you can invite friends over for a game night and popcorn, etc to break the monotony of the no spend month. Make sure they understand up front what you are doing. Also set up a clothes swapping party for those who have a need to shop. They get to shop their friends clothes and have fun while doing it.

I'm tempted to do this. Also, I'm starting a healthy living program with a free App called Seven. The premise is 7 minutes a day for 7 months. It's also set up like a game, so I get what you're saying about games making things fun. We've been too sick to start it, so once we're healthy I'm really looking forward to it.
