1.43 pm august 30 Toronto Canada. I like the way you took your time to show me how to fix my same tool. I tried three different days and it will not fire up. I will take it to Sthl dealer to fix it. And I will buy another tool for wedging. Thanks Tk
In this video the coil was maybe good and just not grounded well (4:13 was wobbly and rusty) or the wires pinched and grounded, just a minute of wire brushing and tighening the screw may have done the same, we will never know. Test your coil before ordering, there are plenty of videos for that.
Just sand down and remove the rust on the old coil on both areas and also remove any rust where the screws go and it will work so you can have a spare thanks for the video
My fs55 pulled this earlier, I pulled the plug put the wire on to test for spark since I don’t have that nifty tool and had no spark. The plugs new and I checked for broken wires just Incase and that’s all fine. I immediately had a feeling it was the coil so I got one. But what’s crazy is my primer bulb was shot anyway. I got mine used for 100 bucks so it’s not that bad in the end.
I had to replace the magneto, not brush the contacts, and I also replaced the primer bulb and cleaned the screen on the spark arrestor. Possibly you didn't watch much of the video....
Did you think that the bolts of the Magneto were loose and it also looks rusty. Maybe if you cleaned the contacts and tightened the bolts to the body to the engine it might have worked?
Interesting point, but I'm not sure I agree. Because it is a non-contact connection, rust on the flywheel magnet will not impede the process of spark generation. This coil was definitely bad. There are a million small engines out there with rusty flywheel magnets, and they run fine with no problem.
Good video. I got lucky, there is an easy way you might save yourself $45 on the coil Once you tear it down and get the coil off, you can polish the pickups on the coil with some fine sandpaper. If the surface of the pickups are corroded or dirty, it may not generate the field for the spark. Either way reinstall the coil, and use a business card to get the correct gap between the magnets on the flywheel and the coil. make sure the two wires on the coil are not in contact when you reassemble.
Shouldn't you check the resistance of the coil before assuming its gone? You have the meter there. Non-mechanical part. More likely its a wire to the boot or something no?
Possibly, but that was not the cause of the no start situation with this machine. The ignition coil was faulty, and the leaking primer bulb was just another issue to resolve while we were servicing the machine.
I'm not sure where to get a parts list for your model. In my case, I took the old coil to the local Stihl dealer who was able to order me the exact same part. Good luck.
I don't remember if I tried a new spark plug first or not. Either way, with a faulty coil/magneto, a new spark plug would not have made any difference. The issue was the coil, not the spark plug. Thanks for watching and commenting!
edaced4 you missed intellgence. Like he said it was the coil pack not the plug or did you miss the part where he checked for spark with a spark tester Einstein. A new plug would not have done a thing. The first thing you check for all the time is spark. Maybe you pull a motor down only to find out it had a fuel problem ...as in no fuel.
The inline spark tester should flash whether the spark plug itself is good or not. Since it did not, I knew the issue was the coil/magneto, not the spark plug. But hey, if you don't have a spark tester, replacing the spark plug is an inexpensive thing to try first.... Good luck.
Spark plug tester determined that, for your coil your can use a ohm meter,if positive is not grounded its good, and should have around 6ohm of resistance if good. No spark normally means, bad plug, bad shut off,or if neither of them its a bad ignition coil. Mine had the shut off always grounding and keeping it off.
It's hard to diagnose your machine sight unseen. But what led you to believe you needed a new coil and carburetor. Ignition and fuel are two separate systems. What tests have you run?
Hi Katrina, do you mean to say you have a 17 year old son/daughter who diagnosed a non-running string trimmer? And that my video confirmed his/her diagnosis? If so, I congratulate you both for getting the job done yourselves, and I am happy to have lent a little help in the process! Good luck!
I can't speak for all men, but in my case, I am a left-handed classical guitar player. Hence, the long nail on my left thumb. Check out my other youtube channel Guitar4lefties. ru-vid.com. How did you make out with your string trimmer repair?? Thanks for watching and commenting.
Very well done video. Very comprehensive and shows good detail. This helps a ton with my issue. Nice touch with the blue background (contrast) so that we can see what you're working on.
I may have the same issue with a Ryobi. Thought it was the carb so I sprayed starter fluid in to see if started and nothing. Spark plug looks brand new. The Ryobi coil part that goes over the spark plug is a cheap spring under the rubber boot. Wondering if mine snapped or isn’t making contact
I rebuilt carburator and still won't start. When it sits for a day with fuel in bulb, it starts for a couple of seconds and then shuts off. Then it wouldn't start.
I have an fs400 with no spark, a new coil did nothing so I unplugged the ground from the coil and it runs. It’s either the switch or a bare wire somewhere. Trouble is you can’t buy the switch as they’ve been discontinued. Very annoying.
Why is it that I've had $200 Walmart push mowers last 10 years and run without so much as an oil change while I end up taking a $400 Stihl 2 cycle string trimmer to the shop 2 seasons after buying it new? What's their problem?
Well every machine requires minimal maintenance to run. You seem to not even do an oil change so I would guess you are not cleaning the arrestor, the plug, the air filter and you are incorrectly mixing the fuel. Also I suspect you never grease your rod and head. Tools last forever if you take care of them. Stihl does
@@BarniRepairs I guess I didn't word that very well. I should have said something like, why does a cheap 4 cycle mower go so long without anything more than filling with gas and checking the oil while an expensive 2 cycle motor requires so much maintenance just to keep running?
I think this may be my problem with my Ryobi weed eater. Thought itnwas the switch. Changed the switch. Nothing. Getting the spark tester first as you did. If no spark ill change the coil as well. Hate to buy a new one. It was running so well. Also flooded the hell out of it trying to start. Haven't given up yet. Also checked spark plug, carb and spark arrestor screen. All ok.
I replaced my coil with a stihl coil and did all of your procedures and still NO spark,,,,do you have any other suggestions???? Ver disgusted,,,,,thinking about trashing the Stihl and buying a Husqvarna,,,,,,help if you can,,,,,,thanks.....
First 5 mins or so was pretty good, but I want to test my coil don't have money to be a parts changer nor do I need tp waste my time watching a video to be a parts changer. You have a meter why wouldn't you ck it?
If you know, please explain to me how to test an ignition coil with a multimeter. The only reliable test for an ignition coil is whether or not it puts out spark. Resistance measurements are meaningless if it doesn't put out any spark. And as it turns out, my diagnosis of a bad coil was precisely correct, and in the end we got this trimmer back up and running. That's not being a parts changer; that's doing legit diagnosis.
Funny they all have specs on resting primary & secondary coils not gonna say that it might still not put out a spark if it tests in specs, but I don't always have to be right loke some ppl. Seen where someone suggested cleaning contacts, you said it wouldn't help a failed coil. Like that couldn't possibly cause a problem, looking at those contacts they looked pretty rusty & if you didn't clean ones on fly wheel that was just foolish. I found a way to test if it was your switch, wiring or coil that seems logical. So wtfe bucko@@Buckwsr
Since you say that you are not particularly happy working on two strokes, maybe you can help me on this problem with my Makita 4 stroke BHX2500CA blower...the air cleaner felt keeps loading up with oil and seems like it's sucking oil from the crankcase somehow...any idea why and how do I fix it? Thanks!
My Stihl would start, run about 15 seconds and stop .Did this numerous times. Dug into it, changed fuel, run carb cleaner, etc. No good. Finally, checked fuel line. As I fished it out of the fuel tank it fell apart into several pieces. New fuel line on-order.
I don't know of any bench test for an ignition coil. Perhaps there is one; I don't know. I just know that the ultimate test of a coil is whether or not it puts out spark. Even if the spark plug is bad, as long as the coil is not grounded (such as when the run/off switch is in the off position), it should light up a test light. So for me, it was just a process of elimination.
I have a Stihl Kombi trimmer. Recently it got wet due to hurricane in NC. No spark. Checked with spark plug tester. Would you suggest new coil or could being wet cause other problem? Have had it for about 5 years. Thanks
Just for info mine the flywheel lost its magnetic field I put random good 1s on it to kind of charge the flywheel and it ran for about 30 minutes losing power the hole time till it cut off again is there a way to recharge the mag ? If so please fill me in thanks 😊
I have a problem with one like this, has spark, hard to pull and no start not even with starting fluid in carb will not even hit. Compression is 125 and I have checked the flywheel for a sheared key, it is in place but does not look robust. Anyway I'm Stihl working on it. Here is another item I wonder about and that is everyone I know including myself starts a trimmer like you did so why in the world did Stihl have the pull rope directed from the opposite side?
I guess the engineers assume most people will grab the tool with their left hand and yank the pull cord with their right. I really have no idea. Good luck with your repair project.
If you can’t see a spark. I suppose you could just take the plug out … and put a bit of fuel in the hole put the plug back . If it fires up for a few seconds .you have spark. That’s what I did , So I got spark but it still will not run , 🙁 what should I do now
So, since it fires for a few seconds, you know you've got spark and compression. All that remains is fuel....you're not getting fuel flow through your carburetor. I would say a good carb cleaning or rebuild is in order.
not a good idea to have combustible liquid next to a laptop, but if the dreaded blue screen has reared its head, and you have house insurance, i say fry it and claim for a brand new one lol
Mike, Finally someone has commented about my laptop!!! But seriously, these days a computer and the internet are as important as any tool in your toolbox, at least for DIYers like me.....
Buck, I've done this exact repair on a Craftsman, but it still won't start. Any suggestions on where I can go from there?? I already have changed the spark plug, carburetor and fuel lines. I did the exact same test you did. Thanks!
If you are not getting spark let me know, tell ya how to test, but if coil is good check the two wires going to your shut off, make sure they do not have a complete circuit between them, they should only if trying to turn it off. Ohm meter should read around 6ohms on coil, from spark plug wire head to magneto field on coil. If it reads as grounded its bad.
I have a Stihl FS 131with no spark, 1500 ohms on the secondary coil. Not sure if that is within spec before I buy a new ignition module, parts prices have gone up. Thank you.
Hope you've got your machine fixed by now! The important thing is not what kind of resistance reading you're getting; the important thing is if it's producing spark. That's the real test!
Hi i just finish completely service a FS 55 an its back firing and not holding any compression. i was wonder what may be the possible cause. i have change ignition coil, piston rings, carburetor, fuel and air filter.
@@lukedaniel9969 That doesn't mean you don't have compression. Possibly the flywheel is misaligned and so the timing is off. Hard for me to really know....
The spark tester, placed between the coil and spark plug did not light up or flash. Unless the coil is grounded by the kill wire, it should light up the tester when the starter rope is pulled. There was nothing else to diagnose.
Your comment is uninformed. Even with a faulty spark plug, the spark tester would light up if the coil/magneto were good. In this case, the coil was clearly not working.
@@Buckwsr Sorry, obviously not in your case. When the coil has been the problem, on Stihl products, its normally the metal coil that has become detached from the wire. Which is also a simple fix.
I assume you mean the wires from the kill switch. So, no, it doesn't matter which wire goes where on that switch. Either way is fine, as it simply provides continuity from ground to the magneto to shut down the running engine.
@@Buckwsr Thanks. Yeah the replacement tabs were in slightly different locations so those wires wouldn't reach but opposite the way it was originally. I still can't get mine to turn over after replacing the carb - ignition coil - fuel lines and filters. The arrestor was clean
