I wonder if lies might help. Signs saying that the phone will have its data wiped, or explode in your pocket or something. Right next to a sign pointing out how there are no cell _towers_ for interference reasons so the smart folks don't give up the game.
I think "taking out the rubbish" sounds pretty good. I rarely ever read these types of articles anymore because I know if it's important the good Dr. Becky will keep us informed.
@@txmike1945 What sucks is, as someone who knows science really well, I can tell if something is obvious clickbait b.s. But imagine a kid today who's interested in science will see a bunch of total nonsense. Hopefully as they grow up and get interested in science they'll learn how to filter b.s. from real stuff, but the alternative is they come to see science as a bunch of b.s.
These kinds of "news" stories make me question whether there is intelligent life on _this_ planet. Then I remember Doctor B, who is living proof of intelligent life. Thank you, Doctor B.
It is like that time that someone detected some signals, and they were puzzled on why the signals were detected only at lunchtime... Then they realized it was the microwave oven with poor shielding leaking out lol
Its almost as if people will lie to drum up some viewers for their show or readers for their book. But that would mean people lie for money, and I'm pretty sure people don't do that.
For a modest fee I can produce a study that will confirm your assertion about integrity. For just 10% more I'll throw in an _extra large_ bottle of snake oil.
I'm so tired of the many youtube accounts that have those clickbaity titles with huge discoveries that Neil Degrasse Tyson or Michiou Kaku are supposed to have talked about but when you click on them - there is just an AI voice blabing about general space theory that has nothing to do with the clickbait. And nobody cares about the misinformation spread - youtube just cares about ad revenue.
Anyway, Tyson or especially Kaku talking about it doesn't mean you should believe it either. Tyson is a great science communicator and he tries to be accurate, but sometimes he slips up. Kaku is kind of a silly publicity hound and often gets interviewed as a pseudo-expert about things he's not an expert about at all.
Proxima Centauri seems like a challenging place for life as we know it: Stellar Instability Flare activity: Proxima Centauri’s frequent, intense flares release high-energy particles that would be harmful to life, potentially sterilizing planetary surfaces. Variable energy output: The star’s unpredictable radiation output creates climate instability, making it difficult for any stable conditions to develop on nearby planets. Planetary Concerns Proxima b's orbit: Its close proximity to Proxima Centauri likely results in tidal locking, causing one side to be perpetually scorched by the star while the other remains in freezing darkness, creating extreme temperature gradients. Atmospheric stripping: Strong stellar winds, coupled with intense flares, likely strip away any atmosphere on Proxima b, leaving the surface exposed to space and drastically reducing habitability. Magnetic field: Without a strong magnetic field, Proxima b would struggle to deflect stellar radiation, increasing its vulnerability to atmospheric loss and surface radiation. Systemic Issues Binary system: Proxima Centauri is part of a three-star system with Alpha Centauri A and B, and the gravitational effects from these stellar neighbors add complexity to the orbital stability of planets in the system. Asteroid belt: The system's dynamics likely increase asteroid impacts on Proxima b, further reducing the chances for stable conditions conducive to life. Additional Challenges Habitable zone limitations: The habitable zone around Proxima Centauri is extremely close to the star, placing any potentially habitable planet within reach of its harmful radiation and intense gravitational pull. Lack of light stability: As a red dwarf, Proxima Centauri emits light primarily in the infrared spectrum, which may not be sufficient for photosynthesis, limiting the basis for a complex ecosystem. Proxima Centauri’s conditions make the emergence and sustainability of life highly improbable, with the potential for high-consciousness, intelligent life even less likely.
There was a recent complaint from astronomers about the Starlink satellite constellation interfering with observations. Now Starlink is a major carrier of internet, so the internet interferes with knowledge not only mentally but physically!
What they were detecting was , when Starship Enterprise did a time travel and arrived in Earth orbit cloaked , to pickup some whales . Then warped back in space and time to the Future with their cargo . Thus , the signal was never detected again !
Sometimes legitimate educational channels use the click bait to draw in true believers in an attempt to dissuade them of their beliefs, so be careful what you're blocking 👍🏻
I wanted to be an astronomer & couldnt do the math. But I get most of what you say, & LOVE how you debunk the "breakthroughs" & how much fun you're having. Hooray for you!
Brilliant rant. Thank you. Good handling of the sponsor advert too btw. Your content in general is great, but I really like the production too. Simple, clean and professional.
This is an example of the downside of social media. I blocked any site that reported this tripe. I mean, the greatest discovery in the history of existence isn’t going to break on a Facebook page
You mean there is an upside? Other than a very few creators like Becky, it’s mostly click bait dross. Is a creator doesn’t list their sources that actually say what they claim, I skips them on by unless I want something to giggle about.
On YT, I searched for JWST and blocked every page that had those AI looking thumbnails and what seems to be a common style of creator icons. It's a nice way to whack several at a time versus playing the whack a mole on the algorithm suggested videos method.
@@SimonHollandfilms > it actually is...social media science will be the place you hear about interesting science. tv and newspapers don't cover real science anymore. You're the guy who posted this news in the first place. Pretty telling that you're replying to random comments in this chat, but you have comments disabled on your own video. You posted a video but you completely ignored most of what John Michael Godier said in his last video, namely that any observatory in Europe can't actually see proxima centauri. Also, you're totally ignoring the fact in the paper (linked here) that there were hundreds of 982Mhz tones with a similar pitch shift (but lower amplitude), and that they were able to detect subharmonics in other examples which prove it's most likely sideband noise from a 2.000004 MHz clock oscillator.
Some of this garbage is no doubt auto generated by the likes of Chat GPT and other AI crap. We really need to get rid of it - people are getting dumber and dumber.
Unfortunately, I think it's not even wishful thinking. The majority of them couldn't care less about the subject matter, as long as it gets the clicks.
As an American, I can tell you that there's precious little evidence of intelligent life on our own little planet. As to life -- it happens when conditions are right anywhere.
Dr. Becky, I agree it's interference. BUT I think I know from what... It was probably from someone flying in FPV near the telescope. A drone or more probably a flying wing. (I'm talking about rc stuff.) I say it because I also fly some things... Sometimes... And the most used radio link for long range uses LoRa chipset and runs at 900mhz. At the time it was Crossfire, today it is ExpressLRS... But both work in the same way. (They even use the same protocol, CRSF.) Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊 BTW, LoRa chipset are used for a lot of other things as well, but as it was moving, was observed for 3 hours and didn't repeat...
Don't think it would be that. due to it being ISM it would have to be around 915MHz not 980MHz. ISM band for the USA is 902-928MHz and if you are spitting out a signal outside of that the FCC will want to talk to you. Australia uses 916MHz center. this was likely some kind of rf hash generator (aka cheap china crap)
This would all be well and good if Dr Becky weren't herself an example of the goodness offered to us by our vast Universe. But she is from a good planet.
Why should we be disappointed ? Do people really want an advanced civilization which would forever dominate us and dictate what we can and can’t do until the end of time?
Well, realistically it's going to be pretty difficult for an alien race to travel to earth and they probably wouldn't get much out of it other then scientific data.
We already have that. Edit: I don't mean that as some "the Alien's are among us crap, or the elite bla bla. I mean it, that we are already our worst enemy.
My dad use to say “figures never lie, but liars always figure”. It has guided me well for 70 years. It is especially important to question everything in these days of the liar-net. I, for the life of me, cannot understand how someone can watch a video that has very questionable or fantastic sounding content and then just believe it without factchecking it. If someone posts garbage, they are idiots of low esteem, if you believe it without checking it you’re an idiots fool. Don’t be a fool. Thank you pointing out the fools Dr Becky.
If you don't know a lot about science, it's easy to get confused because you won't be able to tell the 'real' stuff from the obvious b.s. There are also channels that take some mundane thing and try to make it sound like a way bigger deal then it actually is.
Why this video does not show up in my subscriptions? Like, youtube even recommended it to me on the frontend page, but not in subscriptions. Is there something specific to this video?
It's the algorithm. I normally just check channels I like manually by loading up my list of subscriptions and looking for channels with a blue dot next to the name (This only works on a browser with a wide enough window so the sidebar shows up, probably not on mobile). RU-vid's algorithms are extremely annoying.
In the Daily Mail at least, it would have made a change from the regular "cure for cancer" and "blizzard is going to bury Britain** " headlines (** if you live on the top of a mountain in the Highlands).
I'm starting to think of these sensational and obviously false youtube babblers as Science Hustlers, a thin film of scum that make their living on those who are interested in science but haven't seen enough to know it's just fake, trying to make a story where there isn't one. I'd just like to add a thank you note for showing real data and real papers in addition to your professional analysis. The public isn't dumb, they're just data deprived, so I believe that helps tremendously.
I especially like your sweatshirt today. I hope you had a chance to drive up to one of the two visitor centers and hike a bit on the lower trails nearby. It is a magnificent mountain. I first saw it as I flew to Seattle on a cloudy afternoon and there was the mountain peaking above the clouds.
Hi Dr. Becky, I'm subscribed to 'All' but got no notification about this video?? Good job 'Recommended' knows I'm a science nerd and recommended this video anyway! 👍
Unfortunately I think those sort of stories will continue, in whatever form or subject. They're knowingly fake and designed to generate traffic, clicks and advertising revenue, and will increasingly be AI generated. I see this in my own field of expertise and it's worrying how many people lack the ability to separate a fake story from genuine news, and how this continues to undermine the understanding of and trust in science and scientists/experts.
When Dr Becky said that it was time to take out the trash, l immediately thought of Drooper from the Banana Splits, and his battles to take out the trash. Unfortunately, he never managed to get rid of the trash.
Never let the truth get in the way of a good alien story. It's amazing how much money can be made selling BS. And the more fresh, hot and sticky it is the better lol
Well we can at least be sure that there are some alien signals washing over the Alpha Centuari system, because we're still sending them from this system.
5:39 this is exactly why I think we should change the parameters of the phrase "habitable zone". or at least instead refer to it as the "liquid water" or as other people do "Goldilocks" zone... because at the very least the temperature liquid water is not enough to ensure habitability, and not only that but there could be a possibility of habitability below the surface much further out from that because of conditions such as from tidal friction heating the interior
Hey there Dr. Becky. Huge fan here. I appreciate your efforts and I understand your frustration when it comes to poor science and/or misinformation. However, I've noticed more and more science-communicators spending time on this stuff and it's leading to actual nonsense videos getting recommended to me in my homepage. Please do your science thing and let others handle the misinformation. Love your work. Thank you.
The person who is pedalling the story that there has been a secret techno signature discovery is the documentary film maker who calls himself professor Simon Holland. He isn't a professor BTW.
He is also lingering in this comment section and is orbited by some odd yes-sayers that try to discredit Becky on a personal level. It's very transparent, but he thinks he is sneaky and smart and has any authority on the subject's matter (the signal) so that Becky has to have a published in person conversation with him to answer him questions or vice versa. Like dude, read the fckn papers provided in the source links. He could also make an interview with his so-called source of the actual project, ya know, but he can't, because sh*t never happened.
After watching the Three Body Problem on Netflix, it's kind of a relief that our nearest neighbour isn't home to a high tech hostile alien race that's on its way to us!
One thing that was immediately comforting to me when I learned the details of that story is that the system in the story doesn't match Alpha Centauri at all. Our neighbor stars are in stable orbits and not close to each other exchanging planets that would in any way resemble Earth. It's a fun story, but it's most certainly fantastical, and has been characterized by some people as far harder science fiction than it is.
@@takanara7 The Alpha Centauri system has two stars slightly heavier than our sun in close orbit around each other. They form the massive center of that system. Proxima Centauri is a much smaller red dwarf star that orbits much further away from those two than our outer solar system is from us. Any planet that could move between the dense central suns and that red dwarf would be in such a distant orbit that it would bear no resemblance to Earth. What that story had was a chaotic three body system, in which no two dominate. Alpha Centauri is not that.

I am pretty confident that if Alien life is ever discovered the news will be everywhere not just one obscure publication or website. However it is fun watching astrophysicists getting very annoyed.
yes, but with this attitude you will miss the real wow signal. And the WOW signal had actually really cool science behind it, yet nobody looked into it for decades because it was ridiculed.
Every time I see a stupid headline like those you quoted, I just dump the channel ‘do not recommend’. Slowly, so slowly 🙄 my recommended signal/noise ratio is improving…
Even though I am subscribed, this video didn’t show up on any of the subscribed video lists. I usually look under unwatched. Just saw it in the regular feed the next day.
Great video, as always! Funny, your version of an American accent is similar to that of sooo many Brits who give it a shot -- more or less it's Southern-sounding, i.e. "treh-ash" for trash.
You can only blame him as much as the people making the decisions to take his claims and popularize them via their outlets. He is not a documentary maker and his "source" is mysterious, they know what they did there.
Is that the pensive expression today Dr Becky? You're thumbnail images always fill me with anticipation and intrigue, a bit like the signals of possible extraterrestrial life on exoplanets. You are indeed a master _(the word is gender neutral)_ in the art of clickability. Thank you.
Would it be possible to calculate the expected doppler shift of a signal from a planet around Proxima and would it match the doppler shift of the BLC1 signal? I heard that the signal was coincident with a flare, could it be a technosignature of a planetary deflector device..
They talk about it in the arxiv paper linked in the description, basically if there were a planet around proxima cen, and the transmitter was on the surface then the redshift would be way higher then what it was (like 2 orders of magnitude more)
They published multiple papers about it, how is that hiding? What people say that. Are they properly trained astrophysicists with enough background knowledge to know what they are talking about? Do they have access or do they own technology to measure signals themselves? Do they have collaborations with other scientist of that field, to discuss their findings? Do they read all the sources available to find pro and cons for their claims? Did they do the math? Did they compile all this into a written statement including all their sources. Did they publish this anywhere? Was it peer reviewed?
Sent a letter to Avi. Maybe you can answer it: Dear Avi, as a matter of interest, can you discard this possibility for me? The BLS signal then is supposed to be from a geostationary satellite in orbit above Earth because of the smooth frequency drift. The idea is that it could not be from the surface of Proxima b because of the smoothness of the frequency shift, that it must be from a geostationary satellite. Could the signal also be from a powerful transmitting satellite in orbit above Proxima b in phase with earth. The signal would demonstrate the same smooth frequency shift. Thank you, Phil Hall
The habitable zone for Proxima cen is much smaller then the sun, so the phase shift for a planet orbiting around it would be like 2 orders of magnitude greater. This is explained in archive paper linked in the description.
Most of our electric signal pre WW2 were not strong enough to not be bounced back in the upper atmosphere. Thereafter signals were stronger, TV as well, and all these signals travel at the speed of light. Therefore our electrosphere is eighty light years, but very, very weak.
Any intelligent alien life capable of detecting our radio signals would likely look down upon us and think to their collective selves "Nah, we'll pass, thanks. It's not worth the bwgillygeridium to go there, even to blow the place up"...or distance, rarity of intelligent life on other planets and stuff...When I am found to be wrong, I, for one, welcome our intergalactic Clagidcudulian masters...of course, they may be called something else. Won't I look silly?
