DISCLAIMER:
The symphonies in this video are not listed in a specific order, and this list is VERY subjective. These are some of our favourite symphony finales, please comment your favourite!
Rachmaninoff’s 2nd Symphony was mistakenly labelled as “Op. 18” in the video (which is actually his second concerto), it is actually his Op. 27.
You can find the original video with our voiceover and explaining here!

Nope it is not. That was just the name the concert promoter of the first performance gave it and Mahler dissapproved.

The ending of the Apocalyptic .. I always preferred Wand's rather slow but very intense approach (mainly with the NDR Sinfonieorchester in Kiel or Lübeck) and then I heard Tennstedt's New-York-recording. He is - in comparison to Wand - rushing the finale in his very own way. First, I didn't understand his approach, I couldn't see why. After some time, I guess, I got it. Very often the Apocalyptic ends very "open" - with a held chord for a minimum longer then the chords before, giving you a slight insight into what eternity must feel like. Tennstedt's version is much more consequent, much more direct - the last three chords are just played fast in the same tempo - ra ta ta, nothing pathetic in there, but something very close to the end of eternity, something very, very close to the final word of everything. Both versions are simply great.

Thanks for sharing, it is very interesting! Indeed, you can find many dramatically different interpretations everywhere; everyone can have their own opinion , but all are equally great!

I appreciate your love for these symphonic endings. Thank you for avoiding any "enhancements"... verbal or visual. The impact of the music doesn't need it; it would only distract. Did you do Pines of Rome yet? Pictures at an Exhibition? Where's Mahler 6? Thanks again.

Thank you, Mahler 6 will be in the next video, which we have begun to make. I am familiar with Pictures at an Exhibition, and we may do an analysis video in the future. I will also check out Pines of Rome; thank you for the suggestions!

With ALL RESPECT i have to: The best reference as Coda's Finale is Bruckner's 8th in 1990, Tokyo, by Munich Philarmonik Orchestra Conducting Chelibidache. In this rendition the Fuga Quadruple with counterpunt is develop with all his majestic meaning. FACT: "Apocaliptic" is just a vulgar nickname given to such a majestic Opus.

At 37:15 the timpanist does does a crescendo roll which is not in the original score but nonetheless very effective

I actually prefer the ending of Schumann 3 over 2. Maybe I'm weird. I hope you take my suggestion on stunning symphony openings. You could also do the most heart wrenching, agonizing slow movements.
@obsidianmusic303
@obsidianmusic303 2 месяца назад
Thanks for the suggestions, and we definitely will make a video on symphony openings! Also maybe a compilation of the best slow movements! Mahler 5 Adagietto comes to mind with that.

Not a single work written in the last 50 years. Not a single living composer.

Symphony as a musical format and symphonies in general enjoyed their heyday in the 18th and 19th centuries, extended maybe to the first few decades of the 20th in western classical music. There were symphonies before and have been since, but the genre resonated best with the romantic era, which elevated it to its supreme form and extended its scope. As such they were widely regarded as the most ambitious compositional efforts in a composer’s life back then. Classical music and composition from the 1920’s started to venture into more experimental directions, breaking with format and genre constraints. As a result, symphonies became much less common.

Agreed, although to be fair, at least they have included a fair number of 20th century symphonies thus far. Perhaps they will include some more modern works in future videos.

Some people do not like our voiceovers and prefer to just listen to the performances without our talking. This is the same video without our voiceover, as it says in both the title and description, so that our viewers have a choice between the original and no voiceover version. You do not have to watch this one if you have already seen the first.
